What are your thoughts on Sora? Are you worried about the impact it can have on video content creation?

I'm currently undertaking a paradigm shift from being a videographer (since 2004) to being a writer. The stress of film making and pleasing clients coupled with the anxiety of AI shifting the landscape, was placing me in an unhealthy position. I was already feeling the impact of loosing a bunch of my corporate work to Canva, as it's cheaper to pay low paid staff or an intern to create content, alongside this I've lost a stack of regular video work from business's choosing to have a staff member record the videos on their iPhone rather than hire a professional. So, what do I think? I think we have about 6-12 months remaining before clients start asking their own staff to create videos for them.

I never got the opportunity to go to art school or pursue career in the arts. However I still consider myself a creative person and AI is going to give me the opportunity hopefully one day see some of the crazy things I imagine exist outside of my old mind.

The content isn't being created just from a text box. It is being generated based on all our content that was fed to their Ai models. They stole the work from the same creators they now hope to replace.

It's not stolen art

In a capitalistic structure ultimately all skill is commoditized and automated, *unless* it’s regulated and licensed. What Sora replaces is a a particular set of skills including editing, filming, visual effects, and to a degree storytelling/writing. These are currently skills people rely on to make a living. Setting aside project sizes and budgets, and delivery platforms, people will lose work over this, both now and in the future. How much money we lose right now doesn’t matter because ultimately it will accelerate to the degree that artistic professions are lost. the only way we prevent this is when we legally say this skill is protected by education, licensing, and regulation. I think artists need to become more proactive in terms of licensing our skills. Plumbers, electricians, carpenters, etc.. all do it. There are machines that can do any series of those things but the professions remain protected because there are regulations that say, this thing needs to be done by a licensed professional. You can’t just throw up a deck even if you have the basic skills to do so. It’s fine until the inspector shows up.

I think it would be a great tool. Imagine writers can make their own stories and novels coming to life.

I totally agree, making art should be accessible to everyone

Agreed. But think of the thousands of jobs that will be lost from this. Set designers, make-up, gaffers, DPs, craft services. Don’t get me wrong, this will be an incredible tool for indie filmmakers. But the industry as we know it will vaporize. Sadly.

@Tolufilms that is exactly why they are so against it. The film industry has always been a controlled club mentality

My advice to you-- take solace in chess. Chess was the first area where computers completely took over. No human has been able to consistently beat a computer in a couple of decades now. But-- it has also opened new insights into chess theory, allowing human players to reach new levels of creativity. Artists can do this, too. Human artists who grow up with AI are going to create works so wondrous that those who came just a century ago would be amazed. Look how you can throw any random prompt at a computer, and see how the computer tries to reconcile your ideas and make it work. You can apply these revealed techniques to new works of your own-- something no person (or computer) has done yet.

You're the first to dig deep into the philosophical ethics of artists using AI. I believe there is no "ethical issue" to use AI because artists will be forced to use it in order to compete with other artists. People who won't use AI have technical skills that carry numismatic value to the consumer (ie. painters), who are willing to pay to own art that are handmade and exclusive (one of a kind).

Jobs that needed 10 people will only need 2. Sounds like a lot of people out of work to me. Maybe I’m just crazy 😂

You talking about filmakers where they look like their at now, we talking about all jobs inside a decade. Trade workers included (Alot of plumbers, electricians, and other tradesmen think their safe) no job is safe.

I think the next step is going to be to move into virtual worlds using AI created elements so we could have completely AI created sets surrounding us.

At least for OpenAI, you won't be able to use anyone's likeness. But just like Photoshop was used to make pictures of people in compromising situations it will be used outside of the intended usage.

I've been waiting for this type of thing to happen for a few years because animations and stock footage is too expensive for my personal high end projects. I've spent thousands on stock footage alone, so this will bring my team to the next level, and we actually plan on saving millions of animal lives by explaining what the real cause of stray cat and dog suffering is. It's about to be game over by the end of this year or early next year

Game over for the animals for sure, more stray cats an dogs now than any other time in history. I know a neighbour that literally kicked his dog out on the street last year.

People can not use another persons likeness unless the individual was physically in a public space, and an AI generated video can never be considered public place because it is not real. Thus anything that represents anyone else without their permissions in any type of defamatory way is subject to libel laws in the USA. Just want to point out there is more to this when one gets to the level of celebrities and public figures; however, for the average individual the previous is true. At a deeper level, one of the issues is the potential for an unidentified AI to to produce forged footage very much in line with the Running Man, and is part of what the story was trying to loosely predict.

What an amazing tool this will be for film makers to use. It will reduce barriers in terms of cost, time and access to specific skills necessary to express creative ideas. A whole new generation of people that wouldn't otherwise have the resources will now be able to create work for us all to enjoy.

On one hand you can be utterly pissed off by this but on the other, can you blame anyone for coming up with this when they want to charge an arm and a leg for subscriptions to stock footage? I don’t support this at all, but I also don’t support companies wanting to take so much from creators especially those just starting out.
