Sam Altman’s firing by OpenAI’s board shook the artificial intelligence industry. It also laid bare the swirling conflict at the heart of the lucrative sector. On one side is a group deeply concerned about AI’s destructive potential, while on the other is a more market-oriented faction that wants to accelerate innovation. And looming in the background is Microsoft, the tech giant that’s invested billions of dollars in OpenAI. With Altman’s rehiring, it might seem apparent which group won out.

Scary how quickly the board lost power against money and greed. Q* might be what spooked the board to fire Sam. But its only speculation and not public information. Q* is a new branch of AI where its more effective in self learning creating synthetic data, has the ability to "think about how it thinks and improve" and be much more powerful in solving complex mathematical reasoning.
@headofmyself5663
@headofmyself5663 7 месяцев назад
The ability to reason is an important part of meta cognition imho. Think about for a sec what that means. What i have seen so far is quite impressive already. I actually take some comfort in the fact that the reasoning process is written down, although it is still a blackbox. This might help with the alignment problem.

It was acceleration vs deceleration. Sam and other accelerationists have won and have full control. OpenAI is a accelerationists company now.

Not necessarily. We'll have to see who's on the new board, that might shift things. Though de facto Sam should have absolute power in the company so maybe you're right

What would be the benefit of waiting and slowing down? It is far easier to develop fast, make mistakes and analyze what went wrong instead of tip toeing and guessing around. And AI research doesn't stop at OpenAIs doorstep. There are a lot of bright minds around the world that could achive the same results with the level of funding they received.

What people NEED to realize is that we don't need AI. If we just evolved to understand the need for people to communicate and enable one another, rather than one attempting to be better than the other - for any reason; we are the sum of our efforts. However, the people who are leading the world aren't people seeking to understand and then adapt to solutions, but rather create solutions for profit and do deeds to justify the blatant insecurity and greed.

In the end, AI, like Cloud and the internet before it, cannot scale without significant funding from investors. Businesses can be run responsibly and profitably. Let's not pretend that all Nonprofits are run responsibly. At this point, we really have to ask ourselves if effective altruism is really effective. It was inspiring to see Open AI's investors and the Open AI team rally round to bring back a performing CEO.

What do they say it was settled by Sam Altman and Elon Musk? They were board members but there were amazing co-founders including Ilya Sutkever and Andrej Karpathy among others who made deep learning what it is today (together with Hinton and some others). Why is it now only about Sam and Elon?

quite honestly and with no irony or bs, if it was any company in the world that had a grip on this, I would rather Microsoft more than Apple or Google, but that's not really possible because they all have buckets of money to throw at it; and in some years from now US Congress will get together and apply the political flavour of the day to some laws around it

So many words😂 but really knowing how the system works is the real and only point of view. Continue to argue capitalistically about a technology born on the basis of a cryptographic machine? There's nothing else he can do to eliminate every system of security, safety, personal and state law. A latch, no matter how technologically based on the Turing machine, will never become a scalpel for an operation open heart. Remember that it is a machine that will do human work, that of the writer, consultant, mentor and will allow ignorant copycats to write probabilistically correct speeches. 😂Yet another theft of work without rules or management.
