Honestly really dumb move. I understand it, but nothing creates progress in other nation's LLMs like consumer frustration. Literally the censoring of chatgpt is how the chinese models have gotten good, and now they're pulling this on all devs in the country, lol. Not a good idea, but maybe it is idk. Recently openai hasn't been at their smartest, this is yet again another thing that will have consequences. Hope that chairman was worth it, maybe they should try bringing illya back.
as a developer I assure you only the first 2-3 months of gpt 4 was really useful the current chat gpt is dumb and make you waste more time than thinking on your own XD
Totally agree! Its a waste of time 100% of the time, thinking for 5 seconds is always more fruitful than tinkering with these useless toys😅 If you find it useful, im sorry to break it to you, but you are useless.
Qwen2 is also quite good in the open source world. I don't think they'll care when they're blocked. If anyone, the great firewall would strike before OpenAI does.
The Open AI LLM might cause civil unrest in China because the LLM has embedded US state propaganda in it. Plus, China has a tendency to use tech to increase human rights abuses. It's better if China simply just develops their own LLMs.
Now USA is forcing China to develop AI industry in their own chinese way again, just let like Semiconductor & Software & Electric Car & Autonomous Driving Vehicle industry in China, but I do aspect this to come, not surprise to see this news.
According to analysis from TSMC, by 2032 Chinese fabs will produce more semiconductors than TSMC... Thanks to US sanctions, they're making China even stronger.
Now next step, incorporating baidu ai into China iPhone or android. President of China slightly turns his head to some of his ccp members:”so you got your men in that part of baidu already? Good good.” “Make sure it’s not your nephew so if some bad press went down it wouldn’t be one of us.”
How were they trying to manipulate people with it? You're just saying that they do and they are and there are some bad actress but what are the examples? Sorry for not just taking your word for it
As a programmer working in China, my only concern is whether I can still use vpn, through Hong Kong server to use chatgpt, because chatgpt help me way huge in designing program for my work. If openai really block all Chinese user of chatgpt, I can't imagine, how many programmer and postgraduate student will lose them mind, jesus😂
There are multiple of open weights LLMs which are great as coding assistant. In fact, DeepSeek-Coder-V2 is very good, both the Lite to run locally and full size as API. And it's one of the excellent Chinese LLMs, with Qwen2
Try using the other chinese models, they are pretty good now. Chatgpt is still the best, but only by a good 4 percent. The new Claude model and deep-seek work well too. A vpn should still work though.
Disposable military drones don't require high end CPU's / GPU's for LLM's. It's all about large scale manufacturing, which China excels at. Cranking out 10K drones per day is doable for China. Is it possible for the U.S? 😉
Drone swarms were a thing 10 years ago, you must be new to this for you to ask this question. Even I saw the potential back then so I would be highly surprised if military experiments never took place on it. So to answer your question, if the US sees the need it will and can ramp up production. You must be mistaken when it comes to military capabilities.
While it is truly impressive what China has achieve in 20 years, the fact that this happened with the full cooperation of the Western world in general and the US in particular should not be denied. It will be entirely a different matter when the US and it's allies go all out to deny China the technology it needs to continue to grow and excel. We'll know in 20 years how and if China continues to be an aspiring super power.
On the contrary, the greedy capitalist in the US needed cheap labour to increase their profit margins, so they turned to China. It wasn't any cooperation but rather an elaborate plan to exploit Chinese cheap labour. They just did not imagine the Chinese growth in last 25 years. Now they are all panicking 😂
That’s the end of Chinese AI development. They have lost access to the best large language model in the world (currently). They have to make do with B grade models now.
@@kotaku46 Not without out access to the H100 which is banned for export to China. Have you not heard what Dr. Kai-Fu Lee has said. China can only build small, low-powered models and mostly relies upon American open-source models which are likely to become inaccessible once the elections is over
@@JayYu-lr4ro Unless you are smarter than Dr. Kai-Fu Lee you are incorrect. He has said that the best model in the world is GPT4 and soon GPT5 which China was accessing via APIs. Now they have been turned off.
Yeah but..how about American companies that hire Chinese developers? They enter American company and can get full access to Openai. Then they just report back to China that way.
The fact that 60% of AI research papers are published in China makes me realize that China has an active research field and can develop SOTA model on its own, currently for each SOTA model from an American startup (such as GPT-4 or Sora), you'll find a Chinese model that performs on par or better.
@@TheRealUsernamenot surprising. Robin Li of Baidu started out the backrub search idea before Google did. Page and Brin just ripped off of his research results
