Have you ever watched Atomic Shrimp? The only scams he cares about is how to warn people not to fall for them. He also opens a lot of wierd stuff in cans. No sponsorships, no patreon, just likes making videos about his varied interests.

I remember all these from early 70''s. They were used primarily to mix with hamburger, not many would actually eat it alone... The 70's was a time of very high inflation with the price of food (meats especially) was skyrocketing. These were heavily advertised as a way to mix with hamburger (usually 50-50 as I recall) to make it easier for people to afford to feed the family on a budget.
I love that we're seeing the can exactly as it looked in the 70s. Most old products become faded by the sun, rust, or get damaged. These have been kept protected.

The lack of editing is a lot of the reason his channel is so successful. He keeps it real and never releases clickbait so you know that when a video is uploaded it's going to be solid.
You should have used flour, a very very tiny dash of milk and egg as a binder for this meat substitute. Maybe even a teaspoon of oil. That would have allowed you to form the patties in a much more expected outcome type of way. BTW, they still sell this stuff but under other manufactures / brands. It's freeze dried. This stuff will almost never go bad if stored properly.
I’ve been watching your vids for years and you really stepped up with this one. Great job. Flour, oil, oats... binder would have helped but I am glad you did not do that, left it as it was.

This must be one of the best RU-vid videos ever made. It has everything; Cooking and eating really old food, drinking a bottle of "champagne" with the meal, draining it down that fantastic toilet, fireworks... I could even smell it on the grill!
POST 10 is very interesting, fun listening to you talk yourself into eating something known/unknown...making a meatloaf with eggs, onions, crackers etc., I believe would have held it together and cooking this old stuff well should keep you from waking up dead. (Hopefully) Keep on keeping on enjoying what you like to do, it is fun to watch and wonder.

Vegetarian food was pretty common in some places already in the 1800s. London was such a place. In one Sherlock Holmes adventure it's mentioned that Holmes lives close to a vegetarian restaurant, and that was around 1890. Schopenhauer mentions English vegetarians in Parerga and Paralipomena, and that book was written in 1851.

Yes they existed. I remember them. That stuff was used mostly in chili n taco meat. Back then most vegans stuck to bean patties. Some made burger patties but the stuff was hard to find so it was saved for chili n tacos. The public doesn't know this but it's in every processed beef food on the market today. In the fast food burgers. It's a stretcher that keeps the burgers fresher longer plus brings the cost down. Chances are you eat it all the time n don't know it.

should you want to continue experiments, you could try mixing in an egg or 2 to see if it would hold together better. And yes you did pronounce 'hydrolyzed' correctly
Dried TVP is great to throw into chili or stew if you messed up and it's too watery. (Not necessarily 50-year-old TVP, though.) TVP is a long-storing, versatile and very cheap protein expander; that's why it's been around so long. Sloppy Joes are a common implementation; taco seasoning works too. If you're using it alone, just imagine you're building your own Hamburger Helper mix.

You can make food hold together for cooking/grilling with an egg, a handful of minute rice (not regular rice the minute rice will cook with the moisture from the food) or bread crumbs, even crushed up cereal, croutons, or corn starch. Not all together, just pick one or you can put an egg with any of the other choices 😀
Loved the launch disposal!! My youngest daughter would have been the one at my house to do that! She once made a huge bunsen burner using a metal patio table with an umbrella holder. Ended up launching the entire table! LOL Love your videos!

Sanitarium made TVP when I was a kid. I'm 63years old now. It's simply a very old product that has has many name changes over the years. The broth like smell would probably been used brewers yeast extract. It's still sold under, Vegemite, Marmite, Promote, etc. There isn't much on the ingredient list. The current form probably has added preservation and better development of the flavours. Greetings from Dimboola, in Victoria, Australia.
Man, who knew? •cool old product •cooking tutorials •and a fireworks show! This was awesome man! Also as someone who regularly eats vegan patties, the brand I eat has a natural emulsifier that keeps it together and allows it to cook in form. My best guess is a combination of the oil, coconut butter, and methylcellulose keeps its form - as when I thaw the patties and water leaks into them, they fall apart when handled or cooked similar to how this nest stuff falls apart. It definitely needs something to keep it together.

As a kid who's mom used to put red kidney beans and chopped celery into sloppy joes I appreciate that you left them alone! Haha! Maybe for the pattys put egg whites or a whole mixed up egg in the ground!
It is crazy how brand new the cans look, just like how someone would have seen it on the market shelves in 1973. Usually such old cans are rusty and old looking from the years.
I was thinking about using a fat as a binder, my theory is once the water (ice) warms up it’ll just fall apart. Edit: I think the cheese helped with the grilled one, and the burnt layer helped with the other one.
