Everyone: "lol shrek" Kyle: **I'm going to use this to make a political point about the UK government, the nanny state and the differences between a subject and a citizen.** Everyone: "ugh... dammit Kyle's doing it again"
@Dakota Butler Just to make it clear. I was NOT the first person in here, somebody else was. but there has to be a first-person in a RU-vid video. PLUS it is only a joke and shouldnt be looked into this deeply. I don't care about attention or "internet points" or even likes. All I care about is if I put something up, people don't hate on it.
As someone who just got a 7th gen to mod, cracking it open is just as hard as people say it is. I'm glad I had a replacement housing ready so I just decided to rip the current one out
I got one for free, it's scratched to all get out, I'm shuddering at the thought of opening it, all the years of being in a garage probably did something
Jesus Christ, I've never seen an ifixit guide be so wild. Basically what they are saying is: "what you want to do is very carefully jam a fucking knife through it and move it until you get it open or you die"
Honestly tho, I was expecting something like: "you really want to make yourself suffer, huh?" when you're a few steps in because oh my LORD this is an absolute NIGHTMARE.
Ok so long story short, I needed to dissassemble a microwave. However, the thick metal case had been sealed shut by like a press, so I spent about 3 hours cutting the whole thing apart with a pair of garden shears
Centorea 88 I took apart a lawn mower, since I didn’t have the correct socket to remove the driveshaft, i got a sledgehammer and pounded on the oil pan until it split in half
I don't even own an ipod but your channel is so enjoyable to just listen to. Probably has to do with your thick Boston accent. EDIT: lol didn't think a joke comment would be so polarizing. It's a joke five-heads, I know he's not from boston, he's from russia.
A little tip I use: Put masking tape right along the seams where you intend to pry from. It helps prevent your tool from sliding across the surface too much when you do happen to slip. It may not stop all marking but it will help keep any marks that do occur a bit on the smaller/more minor side. Granted, you may simply not give a damn with these products for all I know, but I figure the tip may at least be of use to someone.
I’ve been a huge fan of this channel ever since RU-vid recommended it after watching The Blurst Of Times all day on repeat... I didn’t even own any iPods so when my roommate handed me his old one yesterday out of the blue naturally I was excited!!! I think it’s a 6th gen classic (160GB with a perfect screen and no battery swelling... I don’t know what I’m gonna do with it but I’m excited lmao
The original hard drive in my 160gb 7th gen classic died recently and I probably wouldn’t have known where to start getting in to the thing without this video. Once I’d managed to get the isesamo tool to open the back case a crack, I found that the best thing to keep the clips deactivated was a bunch of hair clips as they’re thin and slightly sprung metal. I’m waiting until Payday to order a new back case, front case and battery, however I now have it running off a 256gb SD card. Thanks Dank.
Sincerely thank you for this guide. Got my 6th gen open without getting bloody (gloved up) and using almost your exact plan of attack with the proper tools. Feel so much better now that its open to work on modding it! Thanks.
Please know that your efforts have not gone unnoticed. Thank you for your hard work and sacrifice toward opening the hardest equipment for our enjoyment.
This is why I love your videos, you're the most honest RU-vidr when it comes to classic iPods. I have modded many classic iPods myself and I always roll my eyes at other videos where they open these things in seconds. The only way that happens is if it has already been opened dozens of times before. The 5th gens aren't too difficult but can be tricky if never opened before, once they are opened its effortless to open them again. But the 6th and 7th are nearly impossible not to bend or damage the backplate unless you really know what you are doing.
If it's your first time doing this, I highly suggest buying a replacement case ontop of whatever replacement/upgrade parts you're doing. That way you don't have to worry so much about damaging the original case when opening it. There are plenty of cases you can get for around $25. I got mine on eBay.
The iPod 7G 160 GB is the second iPod i've collected, and it's making this wierd sound, I don't know if it's the drive, but I opened it up. The process went super smoothly cause I had this video playing right next to be the whole time. You're a legend, Wade!
As I usually change housing to Ipod, I simply open Classic's with flat scredriver. It destroys old case, but who cares, at least that way, I can open it in seconds.
You uploaded this last night at around 3 AM and I was so sad I couldn’t watch it right away cause I was drop dead tired. Love your vids dude! Keep em up!
Discovered your channel recently, subbed. Who knew servicing old iPods could be so entertaining. I have a classic I wanted to open, but I think I'll wait until the battery or hard drive actually die before even attempting it!
Really excellent advice. I have a 6th generation iPod. That battery is kaput. Bought a replacement battery and took it and the device to the local Apple Store where they basically told me to get lost. They won't touch any Apple product 7 years after it has been discontinued. Worse, they told me "these weren't made to be opened". A lie, of course. The truth is that these weren't meant to be opened by the user, but only by Apple, and Apple did open them during the warranty period of the device. So, I'm on my own and will follow the entertaining instructions in your video.
This is actually great for me! I have one of these iPods and the hard drives dying so I'm waiting for the adaptor to arrive so I can put an SD card in it, so thanks for letting me know exactly what I've got to do! 👌 The ifixit guide was making me anxious
I had a feeling that I needed to search for you when I was watching a hugh jeffereys video, as he was taking about how hard they were to open I find a new video
Hey, at least it isn't as hard as an iPod nano 5th gen. I know a local repair shop and he has never fixed a 5th gen nano. He's repaired 160 iPod 7th gens.
6:17 Be careful! I tore the ribbon cable for the hold switch on my third battery change. The adhesive from the second battery stuck to it. They get very brittle over time. It's part of the whole headphone jack assembly (which still worked) so I just let it go since I don't really use the hold switch anyway.
I just did it, with this video playing. I had to pause it a few times, but was of great help. Made some minor scratches to my classic, but smoothed them with fine sandpaper (the aluminium top is very easy to scuff). Everything works, and looks good, and I am happy with it! I used the iSesame tool, and some auto feeler gauges to open case.
It's 2 am and I always end up watching videos like this only. I only own a 4th Gen, but I'm not really that crazy about iPods. DankPods just has a way of making videos that are very entertaining and fun to watch. I really enjoy your content!! c:
Hi I forgot to write to tell to that you have amazing content. And also how's grit (the rock) and how's quarantine has been going in astraila dank pods and I sorry to ask you a question what is your name and your favorite music or song. and to write a long edit i never thought you would read this.
I remember trying to get into one of these back in '09. I had managed to get into multiple previous gen iPods and figured it wouldn't be too different. I was wrong. I managed to bend up the back plate and chip the aluminum front, and afterward it never closed up correctly. Never again.
I am an amateur at working on ipod classics but I have opened many 5th, 6th & 7th gen ipods with great success; several of my own and many for friends. With patience, common sense & lots of help from RU-vid I have not had any failures and a minimum of scratches. This video is informative and well presented, but don't be discouraged. It is doable if you persevere.
I've got one of these 6th gen 80gbs, I've got a new case, iflash solo and all the fixins, new headphone and hold switch and a 2000mah bat tree coming for it. The first time I cracked the original case open I broke the little rail thing on the inside that clips it together so its very easy to open now (but doesnt seal shut properly) so the hard bits done aside from swapping out almost everything
Just opened my 6th gen (for the first time), went very well, pretty easy if you go slow. Best advise is to get a spare front cover (or photos of one) so you can accurately reference each clip position.
I actually managed to do this today! This "guide" honestly helped so much and I can sympathize a lot with how much of a pain it is to actually do. Sadly I severed the hold button ribbon cable...but with a 3000mh battery, I don't think I'll miss it.
@DankPods This video really brightened up my day. Keep up the good work, i'd love to see you build an ipod into like a bluetooth speaker enclosure. or even better! a baby jukebox for the bathroom?
I did open one of these to insert a bigger hard drive and the difficult part is not the opening, but opening it so that you do not make it look ugly later - bending the back back into shape without actually trying it on until I'm sure it fits well is no fun at all. I used like 10 guitar picks (dunlop Tortex are the best I've tried as spudgers, as they're flexible, but not malleable so they don't get disfigured , bent or broken too easily), a putty knife and a purposefully blunted safety razor blade (I used a small, roundish stone to make the blade dull, but it will go into places no spudger, plastic or metal, can go in and it's so much cheaper than anything, especially if it's already spent from shaving). And I managed to get it to look OK, just one corner feels a little rough to a finger, but without any visible kink or wrong curvature.
