Fantastic battle theme here, tons of tension, fear, but also determination and relentless drive towards the goal. Great stuff. Music composed by Josh Mosser, Skye Lewin, Michael Salvatori, Michael Sechrist, and C Paul Johnson.

This is the theme of neither the Cabal nor the Hive. It is the theme of Rhulk, First Disciple of the Witness, and last of his race. He has destroyed the star of his home world, enslaved the Hive Worm Gods to his Master’s will. His master the Witness is the greatest enemy we know of so far, and as his lieutenant Rhulk is the most dangerous entity we have fought yet. With his hands behind his back, he strides coolly around his arena, firing beams of Darkness and, if you get too close, kicking you like a soccer ball. He’s the first raid boss who is actually able to kick your entire team to death.

Rhulk is the first truly new and truly terrifying beings of the Darkness faction that we've met thus far. Lore-wise, almost everything we have met so far is small potatoes compared to him, and he's not even the most powerful foe we have yet to face. Also, his entire raid location is a museum/art gallery of his creation, with distorted statues and creatures (or pieces of larger creatures) sealed in crystal or glass and put on display. He is incredibly arrogant and pretentious as the first follower of The Witness, the true power behind Savathun and the other Hive Gods. The First Disciple is an adaptive track. When you are solving his puzzles as he toys with you, the music is mostly percussion and grows in intensity as you move closer to striking at him directly. I highly recommend watching a video of the battle (or even participate in the raid itself) to experience the cues.

The introduction to the song, is actually the “Darkness Theme” which has been present in some music since Vanilla D2, that actually has this really cool thing going where with every expansion, the theme gets more “corrupted” in the new music added with said expansions. If you actually listen to the darkness motif/theme we get at the end of the red war when it shows the pyramids, and listen to the motif at the beginning of this piece, you’ll see just how far it’s almost corroded and how much brassier and heavier it’s gotten. It’s super intense. I believe there’s a video out there that showcases how it’s changed / been “corrupted” over the years. It’s fascinating. Truly and utterly fascinating.

I would like to provide a different angle to this. I believe the song was always this distorted. At the end of the Red War, when the pyramid ships were revealed and their theme played for the first time, they were parked outside of our universe. I think that the theme then was muted and quiet like a looming but distant storm. You knew it was there but its presence was only faint at the time. Through the dlc and seasons the motif gets louder and uglier as they close in on the system- on us. With Rhulk, the threat was immediate and in your face. "I am Rhulk! Drown in the Deep, or rise from it!" As we draw closer to the final showdown with the Witness, i feel like the motif will reach its peak and show its true form as we face the foe that wields the Darkness like a cloak.

The heroic leitmotifs pushing back against the boss's themes, making the music itself another front of the battle. That's what changes the music from a Boss Theme to a Boss _Fight_ Theme 4:50 is the point where The Guardian's theme comes in, and blares it in all its glory against the Darkness. Nobody knew about him until he spoke to us and nobody knew who or what he looked like. He was an enigma, a new variable, on old but still very dangerous threat. There'd be spoilers but if you watch the day 1 raid streams, his appearance caught everyone offguard and blew everyone away with how unique and imposing he was. Yeeeeeees! I listen to this almost every day and it's always an absolute banger! Really happy to see you do more Destiny stuff! The music reflects the boss fight of Rhulk, the last boss of the Vow of the Disciple raid. And it is an uphill battle for a large portion of the fight. He floats above you as if you're unworthy of his proper attention. Instead he tries to blast you with energy and forces you off the platform if you screw up. The music has that feeling of "do or die" in it with an abyss behind you and one of the most powerful villains infront of you. The music also feels like you've met your match, that this enemy is waaaay beyond you. But as the music progresses, you gain ground on this platform and eventually you make it up to his proper arena where he deems you "worthy" of proper fighting and he will pursue you and kill you if you're not careful. The very final piece is you feeling a rallying cry of "We can do this... We can beat him!" And as you smash him with various space magic and weapons to banish him into the next life forever, the very VERY last bit feels like a berserk mode from Rhulk. Almost like a religious Zealot he's trying to pull you down with him. And the very VERY last bits feels like you were a hair pin away from him succeeding in pulling you with him or defeating you and destroying everything. A close call beyond measure. The first time me and my friends fought him, I felt like: "We're never going to do this... It's too damn much." But we kept at it and eventually, after many hours, we succeeded, with that exact hairpin close call I mentioned above. I will never forget our first 24 hour kill of him. It was one of those memories you'll never forget. Thanks alot for listening to this Marco!

Hey Marco! Great video and I’m glad you enjoyed listening to this song. I come bearing leitmotif lore. 0:12 What plays in heavy brass at the beginning is *The Darkness Theme.* This theme first showed up in the postcredit scene of the original Destiny 2 Red War campaign, when the Darkness, now better known as The Black Fleet was revealed. Once they showed up in the game proper a few years later, the theme started showing up everywhere. Since this raid takes place inside one of the Pyramid ships of the Black Fleet, it’s perfect for the final boss’ music to start off with this theme. The background hum/spook that plays throughout the entire song is also associated with the powers of the Darkness as a whole. At 0:32, we hear a heavy brass version of *The Witness’ theme.* This leitmotif was introduced in the Witch Queen when the Witness was revealed as the entity behind most events in the game related to the Darkness, such as the creation of the Hive. It is the big bad of the entire “Light and Dark” saga of the Destiny franchise. The final boss, Rhulk, is a Disciple of the Witness. 1:03 (and 1:53) is actually the main theme of the Witch Queen expansion, and is associated with Savathûn herself. Savathûn defected from the Darkness and turned to the Light. While she is still our enemy, she no longer stands with the Darkness and the Witness. When she gained the powers of the Light, she used it to push back Rhulk’s dominion in her territory, even sealing him away inside of his Pyramid. Like it or not, her involvement plays a large role in the events leading up to the raid, so her theme shining bright through the heavier Darkness themes is very fitting. Her theme shows up again at around 4:00 in this video. At 4:15, we hear the *Be Brave* theme. This one, to my knowledge, isn’t associated with one specific character, but sort of just “the good guys” as a whole. It’s one of the heroic themes that’s sprinkled everywhere across the various installments of Destiny 2. As others have pointed out, 4:50 is the *Guardian* theme. It is the main theme of Destiny 1 and meant to represent Destiny as a whole and our character especially. I love how it completely overpowers the heavier and darker parts of the track as we rise up to face Rhulk’s challenge. Apologies for the absolutely massive comment haha. I’m very passionate about this franchise and its music. I’d love to see more Destiny music down the line, but keep doing you my man. Also loving the new editing style. Keep up the great work. Cheers!

I know this remark is very common under many of your videos but I can’t stop myself from admiring how much information you can glean from listening to music. Destiny is easily my favorite game of all time and a big part of what hooked me in was how good the music was. Your comment about leitmotifs is really spot on, as most tracks in Destiny uses them pretty extensively, and to great effect. Also very happy to hear you’ll be taking a look at Lightfall’s OST. More Destiny on the channel will always be welcome.

You would love the "Deepstone Lullaby" soundtrack from Destiny 2: Beyond Light. Lots of boss music are always heavy and energetic but many people really miss out on the lighthearted melodies that play during the journey or transition between boss fights. It's not every day when you are hit with a sudden calming sensation after defeating an alien commander while you escape into the vacuum of space.

This particular track blew me away when fighting this boss for the first time what with him strutting around and effortlessly kicking the team out of his way while we were all fighting for our life with everything we had. I can't wait to see you cover more, If I could sub again I would!!

I'm glad you recognized the leitmotif towards the end there. The game does this thing with dynamic music where what section you hear can reflect what's going on and, as you may surmise from the leitmotif there, it's really an uplifting part of the music that tells you and the rest of your team that you've "cracked" the boss. You've struggled and now it's time for YOU to do damage. I love it.

Destiny OST is something truly special and it's such a giant treasure trove of meaning and depth that I cannot recommend enough. The Witch Queen has some fantastic contenders for best music in all of Destiny, including The Aberrant Path, Light Blade, and Insurrection, not to mention The First Disciple. Really great stuff - hope you decide to do more Destiny stuff in the future!

Having taken time to mull over this, I know that Destiny didn't rank well on your recent poll, but I really hope you make time for this campaign when the opportunity presents, even if you don't get a chance to stream it. It really is Destiny's storytelling at its finest, and that comes through every bit as much musically as it does narratively. I hope you enjoy!

Nioce! Love this track and this raid/encounter. You can hear the song evolve as the guardians go through the encounter too. Phase 1, Phase 2, and Damage Phase. Things pick up as the guardians complete Phase 1 mechanics and we move arenas. Then as Phase 2 starts, Rhulk becomes more hands-on and takes attacking directly. Once damage phase starts, the music swells and the Guardian theme plays! Rhulk is damageable but he is also the most aggressive. A real ebb and flow. Then the music swells once more and slows as the track begins to loop if your fireteam didn't finish off Rhulk in that phase. One of the best raids in Destiny!

The First Disciple is easily one of my favourite tracks in the game and metaphorically with the motifs that are used in the song, is literally speaking to you. Just before the DPS phase starts, segments from "Rise" plays from a prior OST and then the "Guardian" theme comes in afterwards. 'Rise Guardian' against one of the most powerful enemies we have faced thus far.

Each time I listen to the First Disciple, I see the whole Pyramid ship coming closer and closer. The music in destiny is phenomenal! Even the triumphant theme in this track as a lot of Dread in it. Not like some we heard that feel like we are wining. This one sound more like we are struggling.

Rhulk's whole theme is of dread. The idea of that you're fighting something you really shouldn't be. A song of biting off way more than you can chew, yet that heroic defiance against impossible odds. The idea of fearless determination against a foe you have no intel on, no idea what it is, it truly felt like you were fighting a lovecraftian god's messenger, something that you can _barely_ comprehend.

The part where you talked about the guardian leitmotif captured the moment perfectly. Because even if someone hadn't heard that part of the song before in the earlier parts of the game; the way that it's portrayed in the raid is that it's now the guardians who have the upper hand in the fight. The start of the damage phase of the fight is when that melody comes in. It just shows how much music can add to a game like Destiny.

I commented on an extended version of this song and the whole boss fight with Rhulk is akin to finally encountering Darth Vader after dealing with a bunch of sith inquisitors(the other major bosses we’ve fought) and recognizing the extreme power difference and how outmatched we were at the time. From calmly praising you for actually harming him, to letting out a final, rage filled roar just before you take him to final stand shows how perfect of a boss Rhulk was

what is really noticeable in this music is that notice how the music is also portrays the gameplay as well. Rhulk's dark theme aka the very beginning section where its heavy brass very like low tone. Its the introduction of Rhulk and how powerful he is and in the gameplay and in the raid your actually pushing him back. He puts up this dark forcefield where only players with a buff can actually go through the forcefield and as each player removes the buff and "Dunks" or deposites the buff he starts being pushed back. In reality its like the Guardians pushing back against Rhulk. Only when you push him all the way back when he pulls out his weapon and starts to duel with the player. That music part where the sudden shift from low to high heroric tone is when the raid team is actually dueling with Rhulk. Its like now its the guardian's turn. At 4:50 when the music when the music really goes up that's when you when you can actually deal damage to rhulk that part of the music only plays when you reach the DPS phase of his fight. Thats when you can actually attack him and deal actual damage to him. Its also a "Oh Crap" moment for Rhulk to because during this part his speed and his attack increases by alot. It was really awsome to hear the sudden shift to heroric moment when you go up to his Arena and duel with him.

Rhulk's "Voto do Discípulo" raid was one of the first and also the most fun raids I've ever done, Rhulk walks out in style while we solve his riddle in the middle of the battle and, if he gets too close to someone, the poor unlucky Whoever he approaches will get the biggest kick he's ever received in his life, it's beautiful and funny to see when it happens.

Recommendation: “The Traveler” is the first ever Destiny track. It plays in the very opening cinematic of the first game, and is supposed to illustrate stumbling over something other-worldly and the beginning of a new Golden Age for humanity that ensued shortly after. As I interpret it anyways. One of - if not the most - iconic Destiny track of all time. It is the most unique track Bungie has put out in my opinion.

Destiny music never disapoints. Even the background tracks are just really good listens. And this track in the grand scheme is really cool. Like some other people have said this track is kinda "alien" it doesnt represent any faction or character we already knew. Its for Rhulk the first disciple of the witness ( a big deal with the lore but to much to go into). Hes completely different to anything and everything weve ever seen. And whats really cool is theres a second lite motif in there which is the big brass stinger that symbolizes the darkness itself. Its just really good. Also 2 other tracks from witch queen specifically i think you should check out are "dethroned" and "hymm" both are some of my favs with lots of story layered into them imo

I heard that snare drum so much in the raid day 1 lol. I really enjoy the fight, Rhulk is such a crazy boss to fight. Its broken up into so many parts, that big brass sound at the beginning when he materializes floating upside down out of this obelisk and gently rotates around to face you, its so creepy lol. Then the puzzles as you fight off the taken and dodge his darkness vortex, he invites you to the top of the arena to fight him head on with the music getting more sinister, then boom! You break his armor, he stumbles and there is the guardian theme overpowering his. You're damn right its a rallying cry lol.

You should give a listen to the in-game version since this is heavily condensed. Having done this raid, the music changes between various sections, such as intro, phase 1, DPS phase 1 (where you actually fight Rhulk), intermission, phase 2, dps phase 2, and one more cycle of intermission, phase 3 and dps phase 3. There's a part where it's just drums for a moment, and being a drummer, I absolutely love that section.
