As a Polish - this kind of music speaks to me, to my "soul" for the lack of better expression. Why? Normally I don't listen folk music on day to day basis. I do not necessarily love folk music. But when I hear something I (or my feelings) know and understand on some unxeplainable basic level it does trigger something in me. I "get it". I understand it and I love it. It is like a part of my nation heretige. Like it is a part of myself. Thanks for Your video about it. Oh and if You would like to explore more of "white scream" teachnic of singing then check out band "Tulia". They have a few fun covers of modern (well known) songs that they sing in that folk style. :)

This ''yodel'' like you called it it's called ''white voice/white singing'' it's a slavic method of singing resembling controlled, musical screaming. And the song I would recommend is from The Witcher 3 too, it's called ''The Fields of Ard Skellig'' and contains beautiful haunting singing in Gaelic ^^
@mjtechnoviking44
@mjtechnoviking44 2 года назад
If you want more of the singing it’s taken from Fear A' Bhàta. If I remember right it’s about a woman waiting for her boatman to return to her and she’s losing herself in despair when he doesn’t come.
@Telthar

The Fields of Ard Skellig uses a particular ... riff? I dunno, but I had heard it before, I'm unsure of its history, but if you look for Total War Euro Strat Summer 1 on RU-vid, you'll hear it.

@@Telthar the tune and chords are similar to a song it is based on. The original is a Gaelic song "Fear a Bhata" from 19th century. That's why it may appear in different franchises. Give it a listen ^^ We can say, the Ard Skellige one is a cover.

What I feel when listening to this track is pain, which turns into anger and then a pure drive to do something. At the start, the dissonant voices shout out in lamenting pain and the slow drums add a sense of hopelessness, beating it down. In the next section, the way the instrumental music ramps up reminds me of heavy, fast breathing when you try to suppress anger. This isn't followed by an explosive climax, but a drop - a deep breath, the calm before the storm, the realization that you can't keep the emotions bottled up. Now it turns into an infectious chant which is joined by more voices, some shouting, some whispering, but all sharing the emotion and pushing into the same direction.

I'm genuinely of the opinion that the Witcher 3 soundtrack is among the best of the best video game soundtracks. So much unique instrumentation that most games overlook, such rich texture and grit in the music that fits the setting so well. And not just that, but the way that leitmotifs/themes are meshed and thrown against each other (see Hearts of Stone (track)) is just... UGH genius Editing to add: the scales used in Eastern European folk music is so striking (especially for someone trained in "mainstream" classical music) and in the examples you brought up, it's so rousing and hype. Also, i love dissonance and i think avoiding dissonance is like cooking without salt.

as soon as the song started, I felt that the music was conveying like. danger, tension, a fight between two opposing sides, battle, a war. and then the song progressed and I realized that's EXACTLY what it is. pieces of this song are used as the in game battle music, so that is 100 percent what they were going for. I know you said to separate the music from the in game context but that just isn't possible considering how much we hear this in game jvhchcgf I love tw3 so much though, I have around 200 hrs in it, it's one of my favorite games rn. it's so good

You can tell this song was cut for a trailer because of the way it sort of pulls from several of the combat tracks, kind of giving a preview what you're in for. I get danger and uncertainty but also boldness, striding forward? Like you're being pulled into an adventure against your better judgment. Really fitting for the feel of Geralt's arc specifically but actually dissonant with where he begins the game - in a sense I think he's outgrown that in his search for and dedication to Ciri.

Have you ever read the Artesia comic? A warlord's concubine uses the powers of Fury-like deities to seize control when he kills the rest of his harem, then leads the warlord's army out to take on the forces that lead to her lord's downfall. It's pretty intense. But this music makes me think about that book. I've never played any of the Witcher games, but have read many of the stories. My mother's family is Slovak, so I definitely hear that Eastern European thing. It makes me think of Howard's Red Sonja (not the bikini-clad comic-book woman, but Howard's survivor of the Ottoman invasions of Eastern Europe) wreaking vengeance on those who have harmed her, and finally leading an army to drive the invaders from her home.

As for Parcival. I'm not sure if it's true, but apparently their relationship with folk music is a coincidence. They were originally a ... rock band, I guess. Their song "Satanismus" has a very heavy sound, and "Pani Pana" has such ... sharp sound that my throat hurts while listening. The story is that the band once wanted to take part in a competition. But it turned out to be only for folk (and folk rock) bands. So they got into it and got so caught up in it that in the end they even made their own instruments like the old ones. As for the vocal technique. I am not sure because I do not know music at all. But I think it's something called White Voice. This technique is very famous in traditional Slavic singing.

I use Witcher music a lot for the D&D setting I run for some friends and it really hammers home the idea of the setting I've made where the world has become a dark and untamed place after the fall of many great empires and kingdoms. To use a quote I wote for it "The woods aren't ours anymore, haven't been for quite an age. No more Kingsmen with their longbows patrolling the woods and with the dragons no longer being the caretakers of the land and sky,dark things grow where the forests are deep. You might not see them,but they see you." There are beasts lurking just off the beaten path and nearly every kingdom, city-state or empire's troops are spread far too thin to do anything about it. And the Witcher series music fits it perfectly,though I do also throw in some Darkest Dungeon for when the party has truly goten themselves into the deep dark.

Also in the same boat, last year I just took action and started to compose for fun, also bought and learned Hurdy-Gurdy. The key for me was to get close to people also compose and play instruments that I like

OST for possible consideration: The Legend of Dragoon has quite a few tracks at least from my childhood that'll last with me forever. Specifically the boss + normal battle tracks They don't have specific names for the boss ones, merely numbered as they're used alot throughout the game. Several vids on RU-vid that are only 2-3 mins long so if you wanted to throw all 4 in a vid (At least I believe) would be more then possible. I'm partial to 2 and 3 for my personal favourites >.>

You should listen to "Hanezeve Caradhina" from made in abyss and then discover other songs from that anime, because many on them based on this one. My favourite ost from made in abyss is "Tozo Hanoline"

0:27 "There's this raw, human, earthy, grounded, *ethereal* (?) vibe to folk music..." I would've said "... grounded - yet ethereal - vibe... " cause I feel like ethereal is kinda the opposite of a grounded, raw and earthy vibe/sound... but maybe someone would like to challenge this perspective...? To me, in music, an ethereal vibe or sound is something that transcends humanity. Something that is not natural and certainly not grounded - arguably by definition. Take, for instance, the music from the halo series. In particular, towards the end of the song "one final effort", after the crescendo: One of my favorite slices of what I would describe as "ethereal" music floats away into the *ether* (pun intended) and leaves the subject with a melancholic feeling of wonder and mystery as it fades out.

Not sure if you have gotten recommendations for this before but Ive always thought Season of War from World of Warcraft, the first WoW was an amazing piece and would highly recommend it!

Great video featuring one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. Thank you for showing this off. Good choice, too, because there is no shortage of top tier stuff to choose from on the OST. I have been on a Xeno series kick for a while, and would love to see you do several songs from Xenblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and even the "extra episodes" (basically DLC stories) for both games. Based on how I have heard you describe a few songs, I think this track is perfect for your channel....Engage the Enemy, from Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GTCB79fDUOY.html

I have some Videogame Soundtrack you probably haven't heard before. You should at some point try out the Soundtracks from Little Big Adventure 2 with the names "Emerald Moon" "Zeelich" "Honey B." and "The Empire"
