So good to see you dipping into the Bayo franchise. Now we gotta react to “You may Call Me Father” and "Legend of Aesir", and even "Let's Dance Boys!" if we wanna be a little cheeky.

Bayonetta (mainly the first game) is unintentionally very subversive with regards to sexuality and religion. Bayonetta is literally fighting the cardinal virtues in this game. Yes she is hypersexualized, but she is also fighting a system of power that enforces purity culture. Her very birth is considered taboo: she is a social outcast and makes deals with demons. And yet she is not cast as a villain, but a chaotic neutral/chaotic good character and the angels are the ones stripping her of her agency by enforcing her to be part of the new creator Jubileus. The lovely soundtrack only complements this. As you pointed out, this track contains excerpts straight from Bach or Handel, and yet they always present a sense of unease as opposed to the jubilance we expect from church music.

Two things I wanted to mention: 1. At 6:50, they actually do interpolate a Christmas song- specifically Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, and the line “Here we are, as in olden days”- referring to this once again being the culmination of the age-old conflict between God and Satan. 2. The last melody we hear before the song loops is One Of A Kind, Bayonetta’s leitmotif. Even when going up against GOD, Bayonetta has the last word. Which kinda foreshadows her ultimate true ability that you will discover in Bayonetta 3… but that would be spoilers. >.>

For me the last part is perhaps one of the most epic and majestic passages I've heard in a video game.

Mentioned this in my other comment, but the melody of that part is actually the line “Here we are, as in olden days” from Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, symbolizing that this is the culmination of the age-old conflict between God and Satan. I dunno if it was intentional, but I choose to believe it was. >.>

One thing that this theme makes me love is how you can hear the lore of the trinity of realities in this piece. The mixing of angel and heaven or church like singing (paradiso), that demonic villainous quality you mention (inferno), and the meshing of the 2 creating this chaotic perilous feeling (world of chaos) of high stakes. I love Bayonetta and the music it brings, it truly is one of the best games of this genre style and is paired with some of the coolest music in gaming.

aaaaaah this is so cool! I was just looking for a reaction to Bayo's incredible themes and you surely delivered! This was a delight to watch, and I especially enjoyed the segment where you explained the historical context of the way the song is structured, I would never catch that sort of detail. Immediately suscribed and diving for more! You probably have heard this a million times already, but you should really really react to Fertile Rondo, Baal Zebul's song: it's incredible, and I hear that the Japanese and English versions are actually two different styles of opera!. And if you have the chance and it isn't too much of a departure from your usual videos, you should try to react to her actual introduction and "fighting" sequence! I am really curious about what insights a pro opera singer may have regarding her costume and gestures during performance, especially since Bayo tends to make references to ballet, opera and theatre with its demonic artifacts and creatures. Again, thanks for a great video, and I'm gonna see more soon!

Paradiso - Graveyard of Rememberance is also a really great piece of music from Bayonetta. It plays the first time you are in Paradiso, essentially Heaven. It has this very religious feel but with incredibly eerie undertones. You feel that something isn't exactly right and Heavens greatness might not be so good afterall.

Funny thing is I was going to suggest The Greatest Jubilee and then I saw that you were already doing this. I knew it was so up your alley and it was nice to see you enjoying the song as much as I do. A great song from a great game with many other great songs. I wish I wasn't broke so I could get a Switch to play the other 2 games. I've listened to several Bayonetta 2 tracks and they are just as awesome. Welp, I guess I better get back to thinking what my suggestions are going to be now.

I totally loved that this video you made a thorough analysis of the song and you explained every detail. I adore all of Bayonetta's games. From Bayonetta 2, I recommend you "Alraune - Whisperer of Insanity" as it has the opposite vibe of this song because it is focused on a demonic feeling, not an angelical one like Jubileus. From Bayonetta 3 I strongly suggest you listen and make a video of "Fertile Rondo" an opera performance by Baal Zebul, it's totally insanse and I encourage you listen to both the English and Japanese versions, same song but different voice actresses/singers. I also recommend you listen to "Singularity - Definition", the final form of the final boss of the third game as this song shares the same choir from the video you made of Jena Anderson from Astral Chain.

Neo-baroque, I love that term so much. Video games have really nailed this aesthetic, mostly because of the overwhelming vibe of "dragon good, church bad" that so many games take, thinking it'd be a fresh take on good vs evil. Baroque music really nails that sense of divine intensity, so it's no surprise that video games use it's aesthetics when we're attacking and dethroning gods. (It also goes super well biblically accurate depictions of angels for the same horrifying and beautiful reasons) I really like this song though, the major key moments remind us that Jubelius (the god we're fighting) was summoned as salvation in the eyes of those who worship Heaven and the angels.

So, I’m sure others could probably dissect Bayonetta’s story and how the music relates to it better than I could, but I’ll toss my 2 cents in. (Disclaimer, I’ve only actually played Bayo 1 - I don’t have a Switch, so I haven’t played 2 or 3. So, I’m only going to focus on 1) Boiling down the lore and themes as much as I can so that this comment isn’t a full essay, Bayonetta’s world is heavily based on classical European witchcraft lore and how it relates to Judeo-Christianity, with the odd fast-and-loose play here and there. Jubileus created the original universe, but due to an Armegeddon that I can’t recall, she was sundered into three parts, and reality was similarly sundered. Thus we get the Trinity of Realities - Paradiso (Light, Angels, Heaven, etc), Inferno (Darkness, Demons, Hell, etc), and the Human Realm (Life, Chaos, Humans, etc), with Purgatorio acting as an intermediary plane between the three. In the past, the forces of Paradiso and Inferno had human agents oversee and maintain balance in the human world - the Lumen Sages and the Umbran Witches. Blah blah blah, prophecy leading to upset of power and thus war, yadda yadda yadda, collapse of the two orders. Long story short, Bayonetta is one of the last Umbran Witches, who contracted with the demons of Inferno for dark power, and she fights the angels of Paradiso, who want her dead and are working to ressurect Jubileus in order to restore the original reality, but this will destroy the status quo human civilization is built upon. As for the The Greatest Jubilee, your fighting the final boss of the game and, incomplete though she maybe, she’s still essentially God; so the liturgical neo-baroque theme for the music is definitely warranted. Add to that this battle is the apex of Bayonetta’s character arc - she regained her lost memories and finally understands the forces that were at play tht led to the Witch Hunts, and she now stands as the last obstacle to the Big Bad’s near-completed goal, to say nothing of her personally beef with said Big Bad; you can even hear Bayo’s personal stake in the battle with the reference to One of A Kind in this track.
