See, this is why I love when a vocalist breaks down vocal performances. I learn so much and new things are addressed that I never heard in other reactions to this same performance . You’re amazing.
I had heard she was classically trained but very good to know who her teacher was. I wonder if there are any videos of her singing in the bel canto repertoire 🤔
@@jessicasopranonotes she actually sang some opera notes in her Coachella performance here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5TmVtRYZLEU.html She also does it here during her song Bigger: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZjehiKCpTU0.html
@@jessicasopranonotes he is a brilliant teacher. he wrote a book called raising genius, where he talks about the teaching beyonce from the age of 8. so much valuable knowledge about singing and the art of performing and the history between a teacher and his student. its great!
I'm italian and I couldn't help to notice the respect you gave to the word "vibrato": you pronounced almost as a native speaker! Having said that, it's such a joy listening to you.. :)
this was a very defining moment in Beys career. like we always knew sis could sing but this was something totally different. this is when she proved she can go toe to toe with the best of them. and the fact that later on we found out she was sick during the performance. chile.... put some respek on sis name!!
@@jessicasopranonotes I will second that comment. It’s refreshing to hear a real vocalist critique another artist especially from different genres of music. I’d love you to react to more of Whitney Houston live performances like: Saving All My Love For You (Japan 1991) My Man/Lover Man/All The Man I Need melody The Greatest Love Of All (Wembley) I Have Nothing (1993 Billboard Awards) Didn’t We Almost Have It All (in the leather jacket) I’d greatly appreciate your unbiased opinion and musical knowledge on her voice. There is also one performance I would love for you to critique. _after_. reacting to one of those listed above. It’s Why Does It Hurt So Bad (1996 MTV Movie Awards). The reason is because it’s after what was considered Whitney’s prime vocals and I honestly think she was still somewhat in her prime. But I’m loving how you analyze and educate us on voice/vocals. You’re terrific!!
I LOVE to sing this song, and it's so freaking hard, so many riffs, high notes, breath... DAMN, it makes you really tired if you don't work on you diaphragm... Loved this video, and love watching you.
a masterclass performance!! one of my most favorite vocal performances of beyonce, such artistry and precise musical knowledge! i also love the instrumental arrangement in this performance. thank you for your analysis 🙆🏻♂️💖
I didn't think I could love this performance more, but your walk-through of her stylistic sensibilities and technique lifted my awe up to a new level. Thanks for that!
This is my favorite video of yours so far. Not because of Beyoncé, but rather because you gave many more insights on vocal technique and practice. Excellent!! ❤
Terrific commentary. Your insights are keen, your enthusiasm is uplifting. Not strictly relevant, but you have beautiful face, and there is something about your eyes, forehead and hair that kept reminding me of the late, great Ms Jessye Norman. Especially when you say 'vibrato'. Brava ma diva!
Great breakdown of the song and also a really good suggestion about leaving out the vibrato at first for the climax and that song makes complete sends to get a feel of the air flow and then let yourself blossom as you become more comfortable with it you're a pro!
@@jessicasopranonotes I have a question for you I think I shared my story with you a little while back I've been responding to your wonderful reactions I started taking singing lessons about a year ago at 59 I'm 60 now and I was wondering if I could send you a short little video me singing bring him home it was impromptu I haven't sung it a ton actually I tried it about 6 months back and I thought the song was too difficult for me but I decided to try it and I think it's come a long way but I don't have many people that I can send my recordings to with the except really for my vocal coach which is awesome but I need other input so if you have an email I'd be happy to send it to you and if you could just tell me if you think I'm on the right path I would greatly appreciate it.
Omg RU-vid stops to show me your videos, but I search for you and turn on the notifications ❤️ Also Beyoncé is my favorite singer and is a great inspiration for me to singing, i always sing this song when i wanna express my feelings. Great analysis like always, i always learn something or you make me pay attention in so many things that i always ignore. I think in the musics that i heard for the first time i really can head all of the details in singing, but in the "old ones" i only heard and feel. Thank you ❤️
Oh my God, this is such an accurate reactions. I've learnt so much and you are so good at explaining. This was amazing, thank you for this great work. I'm definitely hitting that subscribe button!!!
I swear I learn so much from your reactions. Literally you’ve taught me so much about vocal phrases and musical theory for free haha! - I suggest you react to her “resentment” OTRII live video.
This performance gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it! Great reaction, I really appreciate how you break down the performances. I would love for you to react to Little Mix - Confetti (Acoustic), I think you'd like it.
I only trust vocalists, vocal coaches, and professional singers to critique Beyonce. I can't believe some people say Bey isn't a great vocalist. It's ok to not like her voice or her style, but to deny how incredible of a vocalist she is is just stupid. Thank you for your reaction! I love this!
Amazing movie, fabulous performance, great reaction, Jess! And I still hope you'll react to Soon We'll Be Found - Sia - live at David Letterman! You'll be amazed how different she was back then!
Yesss to the older Sia music!! React to Sia Breathe Me live on KCRW!! And also yesssss to you and your awesome reactions!! I love how in depth you go, the suggestions you give and i appreciate the short clips you play illustrating the point you're making. You're awesome!!
Sia may be a good choice because Jess is getting WAY more views on the super expressive unique voices (Lara Fabian, Dimash, Diana Ardukhinova), so singers like Sia or Puddles or Maelle who are a bit weird may be good picks. Or Yma Sumac!!!
I loved the “Lay Me Down” and “Blackbird” videos!! I would love to see you react to The Nor’easters, Northeastern University’s a cappella group. The harmonies, dynamics, and blending is amazing🎶🎵
Loved it😊💜 You have to do Cynthia Erivo " Stand up" and Andra Day "Rise up." I just discovered Angelina Jordan: Bohemian Rhapsody got her noticed. Incredible new artist.
Hi Jess. I was introduced to your channel via your reaction to Whitney Houston's One Moment Time, an unbelievable live performance that I remembered watching vividly as a child. Since then, I have watched many more of your videos and I think you have a done a remarkable job with your reactions from a technical perspective. I am most happy that you do not let your technical approach and operatic training close your mind to the fact that art is "unboxable," no matter how it comes across (genre, artist, on key/off key, etc). Keep being you. Thanks for your positive presence on YT.
Hi Retro, so nice to meet you! I absolutely loved making a video on Whitney Houston and am glad I was able to bring that memory back to you. Your words are so sweet! Truly humbled to have you as part of my community on RU-vid. You're awesome 💛
You should hear MORISSETTE AMON ( live ). As English is her 2nd language her clarity, her tone, her pronunciation is impeccable, it's the best cover you will ever hear.
I ask if u think she is extraordinarily well trained or if YOU think she is extraordinarily talented? What does it even mean to be a talented singer? To have a perfect pitch, to be able to replicate a singer without training? This word is thrown out too much
What are you even asking ? Who the hell becomes extreme talented without rehearsal training and practice, both Mariah and Whitney had moms who were vocalist, they learned from somebody, Michael Jackson had a dad and family who played instruments, etc. every music legend worked their ass off, and usually trained for hours and worked with vocal coaches to help perforce their craft. How does anybody in the world get anywhere without being well trained.
She’s both well trained and talented. Every good vocalist has a vocal coach. I don’t know what is the obsession with not giving Beyoncé credit for being an extraordinary talent. People always try to give credit to others for her genius. I don’t get it.
She's both. Nurturing and training your vocal talent, helps sustain and protecting the voice. Hence why 20yrs+ later, Beyoncé's voice is still in top shape.
@@SteadyNUnremitting most singers learned from somebody, both Whitney and Mariah had moms who were singers. Most singers who were raised in the church, learned from their parents, Clark sisters learned from their church parents, and so on and so on.
Since you're obsessed with pronouncing the "t"''s, please react to this amazing black woman singing the most heavy wagnerian parts and pronouncing her "t"'s very well. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4n042id3FIM.html
@@Rosannasfriend Simone Simmons, Sharon den Adel, Charlotte Wessels, Tarja Turunen. Many European love them, and not the us popy style. Greetings from northern Germany
Those singers are very talented, but there is absolutely no reason to bring that up in this thread. No reason at all not to just say this is a good performance but it’s not your taste. Or just keep it moving. Greetings, from Canada!
This was the best song in the show imho. However Beyonce wasn't the strongest singer in the film. Just that this suited her voice & character perfectly. She is of course channelling - and imho exceeding - Miss Diana Ross, who her character is based on. B is best imho when trying to live up to her idols. My very favourite performance of hers is the "Proud Mary" duet with Tina Turner on the Grammys. B is INTIMIDATED and accordingly at her BEST. You gotta do what scares the hell out of you.
Well Beyonce was playing a character, the movie is based on a play, the play follows the same theme, the character Effie had the more soprano voice while Deena was the alto with the smaller voice. However in reality Beyonce is a Mezzo with a larger than not vocal range
I really dislike Beyoncé’s voice a lot , her constant overuse of Vibrato is annoying, the over growling is horrific and her voice ist 2D meaning it does not project like let’s say Celine Dion who has this Olympic 3D voice .
You're completely entitled to your opinion. We all like what we like and my job is to help others understand what is sonically and physically happening in a performance which shows others why they love (or even dislike) what they're hearing. Whether an artist "sounds good" or not is of course subjective. Just like music itself is.
It's a style. The almost angry high vibrato run/belt is a specifically American sound. It can be carried too far, of course, like Mariah Carey's absolutely pointless over ornamenting. But used for emotional effect, like Beyonce or So Hyang or Celine do, it is devastatingly effective. Strictly a matter of taste what's too much. And it ties to your cultural assumptions. Bobby Hatfield "Unchained Melody" is absurdly over ornamented, one could argue. But it works, and he's not doing it through the whole song the way Mariah tends to overdo it.
When they sang together Céline was threatened, not only by Beyoncé's belting prowess, but also by her head voice, and Beyoncé wasnt even trying to overpower Cèline, she just sang like any other performance of that song.
