I’m so glad you commented on Geoff’s upper register. I love his upper voice. When he hold “no where” it’s probably my favorite note in the whole thing.

Fantastic analysis as always. This was arranged by Layne, their beat boxer btw. I would like to double down on hearing your take of hoist the colours. That was a Geoff arrangement. I've probably listened to it 100 times and am still blown away by the arrangement and performance every time. Their Halo cover is also amazing.

After seeing that bit about Geoff's range in the 8-10 minute area, all I can say is this: Girl, watch their "Little Mermaid" medley.

He went from a B4 to an E1 at the end. This was three octaves plus a 5th above. This was beyond epic.

What a wonderful breakdown! I love your analyses, and this is such a fun song to pick apart. Geoff is infamous for that B4-E1 descent at the end (it still blows my mind that he can do- and has done- this live). I agree; this is a spectacular arrangement (care of Layne Stein, the vocal percussionist; he's a madman!) But what I- and many others- believe to be VoicePlay's best arrangement to date is Hoist the Colours, from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. It would be amazing if you could break down that song- it's a piece that has literally broken reactors all over RU-vid, some of them just shaking their heads in disbelief and walking off camera without a word. It is so engaging and creative; I truly think you'd love it.

I always love your reaction to Voiceplay and Mr. Castellucci! Layne, the beatboxer did this arrangement. Geoff says Layne likes to see how far he can stretch Geoff's voice. Please, please, please do Hoist the Colours next. Geoff arranged it and it is astounding! You will not be disappointed, promise!

I have watched at least 4 other reaction videos by very qualified voice coaches/music teachers/etc., and I have to say your analysis is by far the most comprehensive and detailed. I too get carried away by Geoff's low register performance but you rightly point out to us a lot of what else is going on in this performance that altogether make it quite impressive. This is actually the most enjoyable and informative reaction I’ve seen of this song. You clearly know what you’re talking about and I really enjoyed learning from you.

As far as a cappella groups in general, VoicePlay is fantastic and any of their songs are worth a listen. As far as Home Free goes, I'm not a fan of country at all, but they still have some really good songs like the Sea Shanty Medley. My favorite Petnatonix song is actually Aha (Imogen Heap cover).

I really enjoy your breakdowns. As a former 2nd violin & violist (symphony, chamber, pit, & small ensemble), I love how you quickly pick up details that are often missed (the spectacular arrangement, that descending bass riff, the syncopated background harmonies, etc...). As a string player, I personally love their vocal string pizzicato arpeggio accompaniment portion of this as well, and I agree, they should have awards for Voiceplay's stuff - arrangements, performances, costumes/makeup, videography, all of it. Speaking of, I enthusiastically add my voice to the chorus to urge you to do reactions to Hoist the Colors and the Halo Theme. Two more outstanding videos - intricate harmonic ear candy with lots of cherries on top. You will enjoy them, I have no doubt whatsoever. His cover of Blackbird gives a good sample of his range at that time.. Since then he's got down to a B0 at least. He is always working on his voice. Pretty sure that it's "if you aren't shaking, there's something very wrong." The subtitles got it wrong. It's Earl Elkins Jnr who sing that line you mentioned. Sadly he has now left the group.

I am exploring acapella groups and I truly believe Voice Play and Home Free are exceptional artists in every way. Everyone is going to say it, but their version of Hoist The Colors is truly one of their best ever arrangements. You will be introduced to their newest member Cesar De La Rosa, who replaced J None, and it features Jose Rosario Jr. It’s blown away so many other reactors. Also highly recommend their Halo Theme, where Geoff hits his lowest ever recorded note, a B0! That is also a fantastic arrangement and has a special dedication at the end.

It took a side trip into RU-vid to see the scene in the movie, and then I had to retrace my steps three more times as VoicePlay covered three other songs from N.B.C. truly inspired work and conceptualization on VoicePlays part , and now I'm well and truly hooked... and Loving it.

Geoff Has his own YouTub channel also. If you wants to hear some of his voice changes and range, he did a cover of “Sixteen Tons”. It’s a folk/country song about Coal Miners and the bind they got into due to the mine owners paying them in credits that could be used in the grocery store and clothing store and hardware store that would be set up in the town that would grow up around the mine. It kept them always in debt. Geoff has 4 different parts that he does and “sits” beside himself while he does all the parts. Really awesome.

Dear Jess... Yes, this song is fantastic. I already knew that. My comment is about your reaction. WOW. Here’s my analogy: I’m in the old west. I’m a gunslinger. I am REALLY cocky about being the fastest draw in the west. I brag. I boast. Then one day I face off against an unknown bad guy, and I am shot through the heart before my gun even clears the holster. Okay, back to the present…I think I have a really good ear for music. Classical, jazz, rock, barbershop (I know), a cappella… a REALLY good ear. After listening to your reaction, I know that compared to YOU, my ear wouldn’t even clear the holster. Simply a superb reaction! Bravo!!

This song is my favorite by them. So glad you reviewed it because you catch the nuances to things they do that most don't. One of the things I enjoy the most in the song is the range by the group on the last note. Geoff hits that incredibly low note, but it is balanced by Earl (the tenor) who hits an extremely high note. Gives me chills all the time.

Also, glad you caught that Geoff is awesome in his higher register as well. Layne, who did the arrangement, always pushes Geoff to do more than he thinks he can, but Layne is right that he can handle it. I urge you to listen to Hoist the Colours, a recent release. I think I have seen just about reaction out there on this and yours is top notch. I was afraid that you would be too technical, but no - like in Goldilocks, it was just right. Although I don't have any musical training (I flunked clarinet), I have learned so much from reactions. I really appreciate you rewinding to cover your points. And I love seeing those of you with musical chops enjoying this as much as I do. (As much I love Geoff's low notes, I so appreciate the high register and those runs. My favorite parts are the "gambling man" lines and those awesome belts ("I'm the Oogie Boogie man"). Good to know I am not the only one!

One with the line - prayer is Earl. He left the group for few years ago. It seems that Earl is back. Geoff has 4 to 5 Octaves with low notes in subharmonics such as last note is an E1.

Geoff said he actually had to train his voice in order to do this full song live. This was an amazing reaction and analysis. Theres always so much going on that you need to watch several different reaction videos to hear all the different goings on and knowing the notes is super interesting to me.
