This was voted the song of the year, then song of the decade, song of the century and finally best country song ever. Rarely does anyone try to cover it because it is just that iconic. Alan Jackson sang it at George's funeral and j think one other sang it at a tribute to George but that's pretty much it. If you want a tear jersey watch Vince Gill singing go rest high at George's funeral. I can't watch it without crying

Hearing this really takes me back! I'm very young, sitting at my grandmother's kitchen table in a rambling old wooden frame house tucked away in a Kentucky 'holler', the remains of a big country breakfast in front of us, recently demolished, the others having left to start their day. It's only her and me still sitting there, her with a cup of too-strong Folgers that had been boiled into submission in her old electric percolator pot, me with a sip of it cooling in her saucer. On the radio sitting over on the counter, tuned to the nearby AM radio station (transmitter just over the hill), brother George is wailing out his tribute to his departed friend. A cloud passes across my grandmother's face, briefly, then with a sniff she quickly stands, straightens out her apron, and starts putting her kitchen back in order. I'm still sitting there, swinging my legs off the kitchen chair, blissfully unaware of the dark plot twist buried in the lyrics, remembering the singer's face from a recent country music variety show on TV, and thinking how much he resembled a 'possum. Which puts a smile on my face as I scoot down off the chair, give my grandmother a hug, and run off to do important kid stuff....

" He Stopped LOVING Her Today" is THE GREATEST Country and Western Song EVER PERFORMED AND PRODUCED!!! THE IRONY about this particular song was that George Jones was EXTREMELY EXTREMELY ADAMANT AND DETERMINED NOT TO PERFORM "He Stopped LOVING Her Today" because it was WAY TO DEPRESSING AND UPSETTING!!! The record company executives tried multiple other performers to record this particular so g, but NO ONE, AND, I MEAN NO ONE could hit the notes CORRECTLY!!! After a very very long time, George Jones decided to change His mind after haggling and butting heads with the record company executives. When "He Stopped LOVING Her Today" was released to the public, it soared to NUMBER ONE and remained at Number One for quite some time. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY AND POSITIVELY NO DOUBT WHATSOEVER THAT GEORGE JONES IS THE GOAT 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐!!! RIP GEORGE JONES!!! YOU ARE CERTAINLY AND DEFINITELY THE GOAT 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐!!!!!

In 1969, George Jones and Tammy Wynette married and purchased a plantation home in Lakeland, Florida, near where I lived. George Jones was renowned for his alcohol consumption and his antics while drunk. In 1974, he arrived back home after being on a two week drinking bender. His wife had hidden his pickup truck and their cars so he could not get on the road drunk. According to a “VH1 Special” episode and described in his autobiography, George runs out of alcohol in the house, cannot find any vehicles to get to the store to buy more and notices a 10 hp riding lawnmower out of his window. He hops on the lawnmower and proceeds to drive down the highway at 5 mph. He is stopped by the police and gets one of several arrests he accumulated for drunk driving and this is the first of several reported riding lawnmower incidents throughout his life. The VH1 Special episode can be found on RU-vid.

Greatedt country song ever written

6 months before this song came out, Merle Haggard wrote a song called," Today I started loving you again." Take the time & listen to Merle's song & see if George tried to copy it. I don't think George meant any disrespect to Merle because He later recorded a version of Merle's song. The 2 songs are opposites of each other but eerily similar.... I enjoy your reactions & insights. You are extremely talented.

A couple of interesting facts. George had a bad drinking problem. He earned the nickname No Show Jones during this time. When recording this song his speech was so slurred during the spoken portion. They had to carefully splice together the best sounding takes.

Great reaction! This is considered one of the two saddest songs in country music, along with Vern Gosdin's "Chiseled in Stone". You should definitely give it a listen!

You like sad & beautiful songs, Classic Country is full of them. Donna Fargo " You were always there" & "Do l love you, (yes in every way)" Dolly Parton, she has many "Down from Dover" & "Me & little Andy" Mac Davis "Forever Lovers" Big Al Downing "Come & get me Mr. Jones" Bobby Goldsboro "Honey" Red Sovine "Teddy Bear" Marty Robbins "The Chair" this song gives me chills & "El Paso" The Statler Brothers "More than a name on the wall" Brenda Lee "Big four poster Bed" Cristy Lane "l' ve come back to say l love you one more time" & "Shake me I rattle, squeeze me I Cry" Other fans can let you know more.

This is great but the studio version is great too. It is a bit faster, has more verses, and is easier to understand.

Geroge Jones was arguably the biggest Country Music singer with Johhny, Merle, and Waylon. He sung so many songs. There is much hyperbole, sarcasm, and irony in some of the songs--including the sad ones. Not here though. I never liked this one. I think "She thinks I Still Care" is probably one of my favorites by him. Thank you for this tribute to George.

"I love these songs so much but they're so sad." That's country music. As far as backwards country, Toby Keith has a song "Who's That Man?" that started as a comedic song but tuned itself into a sad one. The Geezinslaws recorded a song "Play It Backwards". There's nothing to say you can't write one too. I'd love to hear Country Maggie.

Imo one of the best and saddest country songs of all time is "If You're Reading This" by Tim McGraw. Country has such an ability to produce insanely powerful but tragic songs.

Oh, you want a challenge for writing country songs? Try to write one that DOESN'T involve: Pick-up trucks, dusty roads, the farmers daughter next door, alcohol (Beer/whiskey/moonshine), boots or cowboy hats. Keep in mind this is one of the greatest country songs ever written and it had none of that unlike the commercial trash that's been dominating country lists for the last 30 years. Write a song WITH all of those and you got a #1 hit though. It's up to you what kind of artist you want to be.

I feel old. I was watching RU-vid reactions to George Jones'song "He Stopped Loving Her Today". They were all missing the mark. Most failed to realize she left him and he never stopped loving her. Then the only reason he did stop loving her was he died. They didn't understand the part where they placed a wreath on his door all dressed up to go away and soon they will carry him away. Very few understood the song at all. Those few that grasped the meaning of the song were like oh wow and a couple of them got tears. But most were just way off the mark. Sad.

George strait is the Country King lol. George Jones was the Possum. Anyway, there are some good runs and content in country.
@markcainyourfriendinthecar3387
I heard a story that he originally didn't want to do this song because he said no one would buy this sad old song. It turned into arguably his biggest hit.
