I just crossed off a bucket list item!
One of the things I've always been interested in is trains, especially the locomotives. Whether big or small, diesel or steam, I enjoy them all. With me being a curious individual, I've wondered what it might be like to operate a massive steel beast like a locomotive, but little did I know I'd actually get that opportunity.
This all came to be because in fall of 2023 my friend and fellow content creator ‪@JamieMakin‬ attended a first time event called "hand on the throttle" in which she had the opportunity to operate a steam locomotive. Once I watched her video on that, I instantly knew that I'd also like the opportunity to do that, so I asked her to keep me posted if and when the next event would take place.
Fast forward to spring of 2024 and the time has come where I get to be an engineer for a day and operate a steam locomotive. Also joining me for this experience is ‪@rj78productions88‬. The people over at the Pioneer Tunnel Mine attraction & the team with project 113 helped make this dream come true.

As a resident of Ashland this video brought me so much joy. It’s cool to see people being so interested in something that holds a lot of our towns history. The whistle is just second nature when you grow up here.

My grandfather was a Fireman on a Shay Locomotive on the Quincy Railroad in Quincy California. They hauled logs to the woods to the mill. He passed while I was still in high school. After high school I went to work for a major railroad and did a 40-year stint. AFTER I hired on is when I found out my late Grandfather was a railroader also. I wish we could talk about our experiences with each other. A lot of the time, the Engineer would take a break and the Fireman would run the locomotive. My grandmother said you could always tell when my grandfather was at the throttle. He was a gear head so I imagine he had flames coming out of the stack and spinning the wheels making sparks and slide to a stop and the end of the run. If he ran the loco like he drove his cars, I know he was wild. lol

Epic video, Jay!!! It was such a joy to watch you operate the Lokie the day of the event, and equally enjoyable to see your video and how you presented and edited it all. I agree with Josh that you did a nice job operating it. It's more challenging than it looks, but you kept a good momentum going which is the key. And you were smiling just as much here as the day we got the open air car for the inaugural Pittston train! Thanks for all the kind words about my part in this and for including the your footage of me running it. I very much look forward to the next Hand on the Throttle event and seeing you out here again. I hope you get to check operating a diesel off your bucket list soon too.

Ooooooo....very cool! I am obsessed with steam locos! I wish there was something like this out here on the west coast... Dang...those are sure some sketchy scary-looking tracks at the entrance to the station! I'm surprised they haven't been repaired or replaced. 😲

Congratulations on getting to operate a steam engine. Most men of our age remember the end of steam engines on main line big railroads. We all wanted to grow up and be an engineer. So now you did it and seemed like you had fun doing it. I saw at the end you mentioned you got to operate a trolley. That is the only thing I was able to do on a limited basis. SEPTA had a trolley fest and let people operate one of the K car trollies in the yard area at the layover area at the end of Elmwood Ave. I got to operate the car on the back end to the start area of the run. We then went to the front of the car and I sat in the operators seat and got to run the car to the front of the yard. The SEPTA instructor said I did a great job operating the car both ways and received a certificate saying I was an operator for a day.

What an incredible and fun opportunity for you and right up your alley! You were in your glory for sure and yes, I could tell from your excitement and smile how much you enjoyed that, especially when you pulled on the whistle cord.
