These Modern Ruins Tell a story, but fire almost wiped it out... Twice!
West Virginia is known for many things including the railroad, the mountains, the spread out landscape, but also its industries. One such industry was the producer of lumber which was needed in nearly all aspects of life back in the old days. The way the lumber was created was from lumber mills and the one we're checking out today still survives, but just barely. Also joining me is ‪@mattPG78‬, so check out his channel for his look at this place.
The Cass Lumber mill has had it's shares of highs and lows, but it was a major producer of lumber and although it's been closed for several decades, it's certainly not forgotten. Come along and take a look at what remains of this old historic lumber mill.

It's actually quite awesome to see what's left of the mill, Jay. You get the history of places like this preserved in photos and videos. Thanks for sharing this, my friend.

What a beautiful old lumber mill even if it is in ruins. Really interesting history. There's a big lumber mill by me. They put out a lot of lumber but no where near like the Cass one did. Thanks for taking us along and sharing this trip with us.

This is my mother in laws home town. Such a beautiful town with beautiful people. My husband’s grandmother ran the post office that is beside the country store, I got to spend a lot of time over there when the family owned a house before one of the floods came through and destroyed a lot of homes. We are lucky to only live less than an hour and 40 minutes from here and still get to come over and rent a house and stay and enjoy this beautiful place. I’m so glad you stopped in Cass and got to enjoy this little town.

This is a very fascinating place. Some awesome history right there, the old photos and information you shared are excellent! I can just imagine how much you wanted to get in there to explore. That structure you stood close to is massive and it's amazing to see how nature is slowing reclaiming this place. Awesome video JP, thank you! 💙

What a great video. So much information. I never realized how huge a lumbermill was. You only see the single family owned ones on tv. The size of a barn. 😂

You could talk with management and see if they would allow a winter inspection, possibly with them at your side and offer to maybe let them use it as a modern day video to show in their facilities.

Shame that this closed years ago and then burnt . The lumber industry is a important one ...sad it wasn't preserved and protected....and yes reminds me of Bethlehem Steel and the Carrie Furnaces. Great video as always Thank you for coming here and documenting this !!! 👍👍

The sounds of industry at this mill are gone…..now all that is left is a skeleton of what was a booming business. Always sad to see a place like this go by the wayside, but thankful it gave folks jobs back in the day. Thanks for showing us this old mill; loved the drone footage especially! ……🌝

We have a lumber yard right behind us. It's cool in one way because I get to see the log trucks come in & the lumber go out. But my the saw dust in the dry summer is so bad. ❤

Closer to home is a very similar place called LaQuin in north east Pensylvania. Started in coal mining and finished as a large 6:26 lumber mill. JP you need to check it out at the LeRoy history museum, LeRoy pa.

Really enjoyed seeing this one. I do wish they would remove the taller brush/trees in the front. Had it not been for your drone footage, you wouldn't have been able to appreciate all the different pulleys and gears. If they allow visiting, then should keep it up at least a bit, where it's safe of course. I did research it a bit further (I was even more curious) and found that another RU-vidr ignored the no trespassing signs and went inside the buildings. Some places were sketchy, but he managed to do ok. Shame you couldn't go inside, you would have appreciated what was still in place. Better safe than sorry and I do believe it is patrolled as well. Looking forward to your next adventure! 🌟

The reason you cannot get closer than you can is because it's extremely dangerous, and the closer you get to the old mill the more chances you'll get bit by rattlesnakes. It's a haven for them over there, so anyone going to check it out, please watch and listen where you step, and stay behind the posted signs.
