I was expecting a paper target, I certainly was pleasantly surprised when I saw you were on a skeet range! A whole group doing this with muzzle-loading shotguns could take enough time to equal a whole afternoon of golf, except I think the skeet would be more fun and certainly not as wearing on ones shoe leather.

I used to hunt with an 11ga muzzleloader when I was a teen. It certainly helped to conserve game. With BP breechloaders, fowling is scraped off with the shot and carried into the game. Of course, that is much less of an issue with muzzleloaders since the process of ramming home the wads pushes a lot of fouling down to the powder. Loading the gun in a duck boat or a covered goose pit was a problem, but it amused other guys.

Thanks for increasing my interest in black power arms. I was just eyeballing 2 used Thompson Center .50 cal Hawkins Plains rifles just a couple of days ago... Was that video published? And will we see more of that rifle (maybe even with you making some paper cartridges for it)?
@user-sc5yd4jy9s

I'll tell you a story. We went hunting in the spring. There were so many ducks and woodcocks that in two days we shot all the cartridges! And we still have two days to live there! And so we got the old, but excellent black powder, primers and shot bag from an old local hunter! And some brass sleeves. The holes for the primer were expanded so that it could be easily reached, they inserted these casings into the chamber of double-barreled guns, and then, like you, the whole process! So we hunted like in the 18th century! But what an entourage! Like three musketeers))) I remember it all my life!

The muzzleloading shotgun just fascinates me and looks like a joy to shoot. But here in Michigan in the U.S., I have acquired all I need except Black Powder and I have zero desire to shoot with muzzleloading propellant or black powder substitute. Its the 'history' that I want to experience, if that makes sense to anyone. "Back in the day" in Britain, on a gentleman's estate, there would be the group of shooters, each shooter had a man whom loaded and made ready the shotguns so that his gentleman would never be without a loaded shotgun, then there were a couple of men who released the pigeons. I will be satisfied shooting the clay version and doing the work myself.
@w.p.958
@w.p.958 2 года назад
I started with deer hunting with a .45 cal percussion rifle, borrowed by dad's .50 cal. Hawkins plains rifle for target shooting, and then my step dad bought me a used Italian made .44 cal 1860 Colt Army when I was 16. I still have it. The good thing is most of these types of firearms are pretty affordable in the USA vs. modern firearms. They may not shoot or reload as fast, however you learn to appreciate the focus on accuracy and taking care of the arms. It is more art than science to me, and FUN.

Another advantage is that you can have them shipped directly to your home instead of going through a licensed dealer. Saves a good deal of time and aggravation (depending on how neurotic your state is about waiting periods, fees, etc)...which will likely be made up by the process of learning good cleaning habits and developing the optimum load for the gun.

Question i jusy got a Pedersoli howdah.. and i loaded it much like you but with home made wads. Using #6 pellets. When i fired it using 2f 50 grains. 99% of the pellets hit the target. But some actually hit my jeans and my arm. Like it fired backwords towards me.. or was that the pellets bouncing off the wooden stand i used for my paper targets about 7 yards out ? . I stopped using pellets and started using two .15 patchs and a 580 lead ball in each cylinder.. fires great either way just was suprised to feel pellets come back at me.. im not sure if its my wads or they just bounced back at me
@capandball
@capandball 2 года назад
It can happan that they nounced back from wood. The muzzle velocity from a pistols size barrel is much less than from shotgun barrels, therefore probably there is not enough impact energy for the lead to deform or penetrate the wood.
