Welcome to our journey to see Alaskan Brown Bear at Brooks Camp Katmai National Park. It's quite the journey to get there and you need to book well ahead of time. Not many people are able to get to this area. We took the Katmai Air airline and the only way to get in is to fly to King Salmon, Alaska to get a float plane for the last 20 minute flight. Once you get to Brooks Camp you will need to visit the Visitor Center to attend Bear School. There are bear literally all over the place and they are very much wild. It's very possible to meet one on your way to the falls so they want to make sure you stay calm and don't run. They encourage you to talk so that the bear are not surprised if you walk up to them. You will need to follow a boardwalk to get to a trail that takes you to Brooks Falls Trail. Once you get to the sign it's about a 1.2 mile walk to get to the overlooks. When you get to the overlooks make sure you check in with the Ranger to get a time slot to get to the main overlook. You can spend all the time you want at the secondary overlook and the views are no less amazing. It is really an amazing sight and I'm guessing there were around 20 bear roaming around at some point. We even saw a little cub. Adorable little guy. After taking in the views we had to make sure we got back to our float plane to head back the other direction. Since the planes are limited in seating, they will invite a passenger to sit in the co-pilot seat. What an adventure that is. Great trip! We can check that one off our bucket list.
