DIANE Anja, I have been making hats using the basic process you have in this tutorial, however, after crocheting several rows and want to end, I find that I am on the row just above where I want to end. I can't properly end because to do the last slip stitch means making the slip stitch into the first stitch on the row below. I am new to crocheting and can't for the life of me figure out what I am doing wrong.???? Would appreciate your help if you have time.

Ophelia I am 57 and have been crocheting and knitting for 52 of those years. You just demystified the whole process for me. 🙂 I especially appreciate your explanation of the first chain and the slip stitch forming the top of that last stitch. Thank you, thank you for cementing the process for me. ❤️

Ophelia I started a project in the round and was going nuts trying to keep my rounds flat while increasing. I even looked for videos to help those I saw were either fast or making no sense. I found yours and was very elated. Did I say I am 69 years old and have been crocheting since 8 yrs of age. In my 40's I picked up my hook again along with many projects. You are a FANTASTIC INSTRUCTOR. And your method isn't silly at all if that's what's working for you and it helps others. Thank you for demystifying increasing rounds and keeping the project flat.

I agree with MaryintheMaking!!! I started crocheting "circles" about 1 year ago. Every video I've watched had a different way of counting the stitches while making a flat circle, and none made sense to me. Your video made me feel like yelling "Hurray!" Thank you! 🤗

I started crocheting a month ago and wasn’t able to make ANYTHING because no tutorial would ever make sense to me. I would look at the comments in a tutorial and they would all basically say the same thing “This tutorial is the best one out there”. Only it wasn’t the best one because THIS one is!! You explain stuff so easily and I just finished my first ever circle that I will be using as a coaster. I am over the moon to finally find someone who explains everything in a way someone like me could understand. I’m now going to make 700 flat circles for my house :DD

Oh, Anja, what an awesome memory tip for crocheting in the round. As you said, it may be a silly little thing, but who cares when it's greatly helping you to keep track? I'm all for tips and tricks for memory or crochet. I also noticed that with this process of chaining up 2 and then forgetting about it gives a much cleaner finish with no unsightly seam in the project. Thanks again, Anja, for your wonderful guidance.

Anja, I have a tip for you in case you don't know of this one. It reminded me to share with you when you made your couch cushion with tassels and just kept forgetting. Thank you for this video on how to make a flat circle coaster! I love your tip in keepig track of how many stitches you are to suppose to do in each row by stating that the last stitch in a count is afraid so it wants to be in the same stitch as the previous stitch. It is so clever!

Thank you so much for this tutorial. Counting the first ch2 as the last stitch instead of the first makes all the difference. Your instructions do indeed make a perfectly flat circle with no seam. When making a hat, I've found that starting with 8 stitches (instead of 10) will cause the crown of the hat to gently curve down to where the straight sides begin.

Anja, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! I will never dread beanies ever again and not have that dreadful crooked line either! You are such a love. My Nanny and my Grandmother's help teach me to crochet. Also, our housekeeper, helped when my parents would go out of country. They had a dairy farm in Surrey. I loved it there. It just took a few days to get acclimated to the smell of silage. Whew! That is some smelly stuff! However, after a few days one couldn't smell it anymore. I do rattle on! I do appreciate you so much. I've been a subscriber forever and have always loved you. But this video will change my crochet life! You see, I have eight grandchildren and they love my beanies. I take them to pick out their yarn and then I whip up their little beanies, some not so little anymore.❤ Thank you dear one!

Ophelia ... I'm sure you won't see this but I have been crocheting only 5 years on and off since my momma passed. I have never been able to crochet a circle without it looking wonky somewhere on it. After your video I am encouraged to crochet more and even "hubby" said my work was very pretty. I consider myself still a beginner and just venturing out with other projects since the pandemic. We never know what someone's word will do for us! Your circle story is perfect for me ... a 30 year retired elementary teacher. Thank you and God bless you and your work.

Your video changed my life. I was always reluctant to crochet circles because I didn't know where to slip stich the row together (so many instructions say in the top of the chain 2 and I would second guess myself) or where to put the first or last stitch. I would also get flustered trying to remember the increase pattern for each round. Your instructions are so clear and easy to remember. I love the repeat pattern rather than trying to memorize. Now I LIKE crocheting circles and do so with confidence! Thank you so much for sharing your technique and story!!

On the other hand, if you ARE making a hat, start with 8 stitches (instead of 10), and it will curve correctly until you begin the straight sides.

I started crocheting 2 months ago and been struggling in doing a flat circle as I am confused with increasing. But now, I am confident in doing increases. I love how you explained it and I love the stories of each row, it helped me to remember. "Scared stitch" for the win! 🎉

Ophelia, you are a superb tutor I've listened and watched many a crochet tutor, doing the Magic Circle on You Tube.. There seems to be many different ways to do the magic circle. But the way you perform doing this, in my book. Your "Simply The Best" as Tina wouid say. 👍👏💙👏💜👏👏👏

Hi from Australia. Your technique is a winner for sure. My daughter wanted 2 round 45cm doilies for tables in black and after many failed attempts of wavy doilies watched this video, was mesmerised and gave it a crack! Ended up using black cotton yarn 8 ply did 19 rows and a scalloped border. Looks fantastic and is totally flat. Daughter is so happy and I am thrilled with the outcome. Thank you for sharing this with all of us ‘pandemic’/lockdown’ crocheters.

It is indeed a superb tip. The new stitch being scared goes in with the previous stitch may sound silly but it is definitely going to be worth remembering the increase in this way. I have had to redo quite a bit sometimes but this tip just has got stamped in my memory. Thank you very much Anja for sharing.

I'm new to crochet and this video of yours is the best yet!!!! I finally understand how and when to increase. My daughter wants me to make her a flat circle elephant head with ears and truck holding sunflowers and this really helped me get started. She wants it about two or three feet wide. Thank you so much.
