This has to be one of the worst bits in the history of comedy. I don't watch SNL generally. The greats on that show are long gone, and it's devolved into safe, PC garbage. Drunk Uncle isn't even remotely edgy. He's literally just rambling on like a homeless drunk person would. This is so cringe it's ridiculous. No punchlines, and nothing topical. Just awful.
"That guy's on SNL and we would NEVER have him on the show." They've had him on several times since this and Opie now acts like Moynihan and the current cast of SNL are hilarious, even though it's all just as bad as Drunk Uncle.
Opie is the biggest fraud ever. He will bash some guy doing a RU-vid video and as soon as that video goes "viral" he starts sucking the guys dick trying to get him on the show
99 percent of all drunks are this unfunny and make you feel this uncomfortable, so as far as straight drama goes it was a brilliant characterization. But as comedy, it sucked. Big time.
SNL is headed back to being as bad as it was those years Julia Louis Dreyfus was a cast member. Just a wasteland of hacky, derivative, celebrity cameo-based comedy.
I'm pretty sure "wasteland of hacky, derivative, celebrity cameo based comedy" is the description given for SNL on its Wikipedia page. If not, it should be.
snl has always been hot dogshit. always. a zombified relic from before anyone had ever seen anything beyond sqeaky clean comedy, and when being live was something supposedly impressive.
The drunk uncle us also a worse version of Dana Carvey l's grumpy old nan, but without the humor. The ending was painful too because you could tell he was throwing out every stale joke despaately trying to fibd some laugh that wasn't coming
I would rather watch Drunk Uncle than listen to Billy Joel. Also, Bobby Moynahan is funny as hell. One if the few reasons why I even watch SNL now a days.
Even with material as anodyne as SNL, I still can't accept Opie's criticism. And I waited for a long time before resiling. Years. I'd see the wall-to-wall Opie hatred, wonder why it was so vitriolic, and give the guy the benefit of the doubt. In so doing I came to dislike him and love Ant.
+jason snyder It's not that they don't like the character. It's that the crowd and the character combo created an extremely awkward bomb. Check out the clip where Bobby Moynihan comes into the studio to talk to them about the clip and other stuff.
The delivery was bad on this instance. He seemed rushed and not taking appropriate pauses. But during more instances of Drunk Uncle on SNL, I really enjoyed it. Obscure radio guys.. don't be too harsh on Moynahan...
How is this bombing? It’s just a less focused larger crowd(6:34) half the people aren’t even paying attention to the stage. It’s like a house party. Guess who bombed into non-existence in 2014???? (Hint: one of thinks the other is a difficult ass)These New York “back of the classroom” types like to talk up their own creative frustration-envy and then they get the listener sycophants and studio lackies and donut runners to co-sign. Howard Stern does the same thing. Stopping by the side of the road to oogle a fender bender playing it up like it’s a scene out of Final Destination, all the while subliminally hinting at their superior “lack of cluelessness.” You all know the types.
