It makes it sound like the bit's run out of steam and now he's just reading the crappy ones to pad out time. Which obviusly wasn't the case, they were going great with it. That and it makes him sound disinterested, "Oh it's my turn? ahhh uhhh hmmm I guess this one will do"
Opie is spitting out these punchlines as fast as he can to make up for his lack of creativity and humor. That fucking mumbling he does when he isn't reading off his computer ruins the bit. If he remained silent the joke would have room to settle and might actually get a chuckle.
The worst part about the callers is that they think they can hang with the comedians. He kept bombing when he tried to change the set up, and then got mad every time they told him to do it again.
