Oppenheimer is one of the biggest movies of the year, grossing almost a billion dollars at the box office. And what's crazy about that is that it's a 3-hour drama. There is no Marvel action or DC chases or any usual blockbuster high-speed motion. There's people sitting in rooms talking. And still, it moves faster than most MCU entries. How is that possible? Because Oppenheimer is the ultimate "movie" movie. That's my theory, at least. So, in today's Film Perfection, let's dive into that theory to find more. Why is Oppenheimer such a success and also one of the best movies in a long time.

I feel like Nolan is one the few directors who actually makes Movies nowdays. Not just stories or adaptations or products. Works that are made for Cinema. Edit: i feel like my coment was misunderstood. I didn't say that he is the best director or that his movies are perfect. But he actually tries to make good movies with theaters in mind. Even very good directors make movies that can be viewed at home just as easily nowdays. And ones which aren't like Avatar or anything MCU related are just mindless spectacle. Unfortunatley he is also the only one who gets the funding.

Your anatomies are true explorations into why something you expected to enjoy simply didn't work for you. You are thorough and kind and always recognise the effort and the good ideas that go into something even if the totality doesn't lift off. Well, it wasn't actually really his whole motivation. His motivation came from Oppenheimer recommending to negotiate with the Soviets and not building the H-bomb. All wars bring their good and bad things, the 2 World Wars provided part of modern weaponry which is essential for any army, and many other important everyday inventions, such as the spread spectrum which would lead up to Wi-Fi. Speaking about that, imagine a movie about Hedy Lamarr, I think it would be kinda like The Aviator (my favorite Scorsese/DiCaprio movie), focusing on Lamarr's career as a movie star, with all the fashion, glamour and gossip from old Hollywood, and then her scientific life as Hedwig Kiesler (her real name), and how with the help of composer George Antheil, they developed a secret communications' system, to defeat the nazis' and ensure victory for the allies, it would be just as interesting as Oppenheimer or The Imitation Game, it would be an inspirational story for women and scientists (women scientists by that mean too), and just like Oppeheimer, she was jewish too, offered confidential information to the US government, due to her fascist ex-husband's contacts.

2023 is a unique year when people got tired of useless sequels (Indy 5), Disney live-action remakes (The Little Mermaid), installments in long running franchises (Fast X), and superhero movies (except GOTG 3 and Across The Spider-Verse), but they were excited about a 3-hour biopic made by Christopher Nolan. Maybe, the success of Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig's Barbie can be a point of going for better, more fresh and author-driven. I want to believe in it.
@camreality

Yea I think people just want to see more refreshing, original work that makes spending $20 to see a movie in theaters worth their while. I really liked Oppenheimer and Barbie, although my critiques for them are kinda echoed by others. For Oppenheimer, it was hard to hear half the dialogue and it’s because of Nolan’s consistent issue with sound mixing. Loved the music but at times it overpowered the dialogue, especially when you see it in IMAX. As for Barbie, I felt like the messaging could’ve been a little more profound. A lot of ppl thought it was so deep with how it approaches feminist messaging and I thought that it could’ve explored its themes more deeply. But overall I really enjoyed both movies.

Oppenheimer is one of those films that even though it's as perfect as a film can be, there's still a lot to talk about. Usually with a film that's good, it's hard to talk about WHY it's good. Vs a film that's bad or average there's a myriad you can easily pick those apart. With Oppenheimer, you can talk about the score, the cast, the cinematography, the pacing and not just the filmmaking aspects, it makes you question things as well. Makes you rethink what you thought you knew about history. And that's especially remarkable, given that this is a point in time we all know about to some extent. We know why the bomb was created we know the consequences. But what this movie did was bring home the EMOTION of it. With history, it's all too easy to feel distanced from it. Even with events as recent as the 40s. Oppenheimer makes us realize that time is relative.
@self-parternerd8661
@self-parternerd8661 6 месяцев назад
Throughout this video I realized how this movie manages to do what it does and keep your attention: it's like a puzzle. At the beginning you turn all the pieces around and then you start sorting them by colors, angle, themes (whatever you use) and finally, when you put it all together, you realize that it's a symmetric movie and the point when the bomb explodes (the only time you see it in action) is the metaphorical shift in Oppenheimer's beliefs (which explains all the questions he is asked during the interrogation). It's like Inception but instead of going deeper you go back and forth in time. Classic Nolan! Masterpiece of character work and suspense.

Right now in the anime world we have Frieren, slow paced storytelling that still progresses the character developments in a consistent way with incremental information. I love Oppenheimer for the same reason, slow paced storytelling that delivers up to the climax and doesn't fall short. The cinematography and music go hand in hand that makes us _feel_ the movie, not just looking alone at the screen but sensing what's beyond the screen, almost as if it's tangible. Practical effects go a long way and give a fresher taste, less cgi more traditional.

I think what keeps it going is not only the change in timelines and scenes but the music. Notice there is music throughout the entire movie. Even heavy dialogue scenes. There's never really a quiet sit down and talk moment. There is always music. Sometimes, to the point that it annoyed me, and I couldn't hear what the characters were saying. Nolan is one of the few directors that can get people in theaters from his reputation alone. That’s overall a good thing for the art form of cinema. Regardless of one’s opinions on Nolan, it’s not common for a director to achieve that level of respect. That being said, he can get in his own way when he makes films. He can get in the weeds for the sake of pursuing technical achievement and slow the pace of a movie to a crawl. Sometimes it really works to stretch out drama and build tension, and other times it can come off as trying to make something appear clever for the sake of trying to make his films seem intelligent. I mean, who is anyone to criticize the guy in a RU-vid comments section with credibility? I’m not saying I think I could do better than the guy. When I look at examples of his biggest movies though he’s shown a willingness to collaborate and treat his scripts to tighten things up.

Now Nolan just needs to invent a time machine so I can go back to a time where sitting thru a three hour movie about anything is a possibility.

@@psilon6999 i have spent over 40 years watching longform content. I am truly happiest watching short form content. If I do not watch it at 2x speed even that is intolerable.

@@bltvdpsilon is right. The constant consume of short form content already messed with your brain. Your brain craves fast dopamine hits and if it doesn’t get them fast enough it gets bored that’s why you can’t watch long form content in normal speed anymore. Highly recommend to stop doing that, it’s destructive even if you can’t realize it right now

@@psilon6999 did you completely ignore my reply comment? I told you I was much happier now not watching longform content. When you get older maybe yopu will have preferences as well. I think fast short form content is more enjoyable. Why would I go back to something I don’t like as much. Movies are in no way superior to youtube videos. People should enjoy what they enjoy.

I like how Nolan makes something simple can be intriguing in any movies that he made. Like the stomping sound which also can be interpreted as the sound of explotion on Oppenheimer and Rise chant in different language on Dark Knight Rises.

Using the verse from Opp vs Thanos in epic rap battles of history just may be the single most greatest thing about this video..which also happened to be great btw. I didn't see the movie yet, I was afraid it was gonna be too boring to pay for on Amazon. Mind changed sir.🤠

Another great example of mini movies inside a movie is Forrest Gump. The movie doesn't even have a plot or end goal, we just see different sections of his life and each of them could have it's own movie made (childhood, cripple into a football star, Vietnam war hero and hippies, table tennis master, shrimp farming, running across US,....).

Have you seen A Christmas Story? Not a bunch of mini movies, more like side plots to progress the main story.

I dom't know if it's still relevant, but the "Q's and A's" section describes what made Five Nights at Freddy's as a franchise interesting: each game explored an answer to a question, while creating other questions that would be answered (often indirectly). From dates, to the killer's identity, to the methods of a character's death and resurrection, to motivations, it was always coming but it required patience and analytical thinking to tie things together. It was also a good thing since the franchise didn't really have an overarching story planned from the start; Cawthon came up with those questions and answers as he progresses and, even if it shows with some retcons, he did a decent job!

Youˋre videos always help me understand the movies so much better. I realized why I thought this movies was boring af and way too long even with your mentioned mini-movie stuff. I had watched a one hour documentary bout oppnenheimer and how the a-bomb came to be. Thus all these questions Nolan put into peopleˋs mind I had mostly answered straight away from memory. It is definitely not a movie I would watch again.
