(chapter available) This week the VFX Notes Podcast is all about the multiple Oscar winner film Oppenheimer directed by Christopher Nolan. We discuss the film, the cinematography from Hoyte van Hoytema, the FXs from Scott Fisher, and the VFX from Andrew Jackson and ‪@DNEGVFX‬ . Ian and I also had a long discussion about the 'no-CGI' debate around this film and how Christopher Nolan's comments created a storm in social media regarding the VFX of this film. Enjoy.
Don’t forget to check out ‪@beforesmag‬ comprehensive coverage of the film here: beforesandafters.com/2024/03/...

I kinda struggled understanding ned to avoid cg for nuke, contemplating a fire sim for IMAX resolution, actually a gasoline explosion is adequate except they cannot match a nuclear explosion in its first few seconds in brightness and color temperature. Less a cg sim but could have been better for first few seconds even just with color grade vfx to take miniature fireball and turn it bluer and flared out.

Hugo I share your disappointment in the British movie attendance. I travelled four times to London within the last year and a half to watch movies in the most incredible cinemas, which are miles better than the ones in Denmark, and only for the IMAX 15/70 have there been full attendance. The Odeon Leicester Square have been empty on almost all occasions and and for top gun I was one out of three in one of the legendary Everyman cinema’s. Thank god for Barbie and Oppenheimer last year, it was amazing to attend the cinema with people excited.

So how did they use CGI in the movie, no one explains it instead just talks about it as if everyone knows

The director HAD a vfx crew on set at all times, they scanned several sets and props, the director banned any chairs on set, he also banned monitors, except for himself or his DP. When doing vfx, even for correcting fuckups, the vfx crew needs to have access to the shooting conditions of the camera... The precious director couldn't be bothered to allow that information to be relayed to the vfx crew on set. The film doesn't really have geometry rendered (even though they nearly did), but they did do a lot of comping and projection mapping, so there is 2.5D cgi if you really want to stretch it.
