Great video, would have been fun if for S&G's you did the noise test with an alcohol stove. :-) I have three stoves I use for backpacking. A small cheap amazon one that screws ontop of a canister with a piezo igniter attached. Been working well for several years. A larger cheap one that has a short hose to connect to the canister with an adapter so I can connect a propane canister to it in colder weather. Also the larger burner is good for a small fry pan. However with the frypan and a windshield it got too hot and the plastic on the piezo melted so I use the flint from a lighter to light it now. And lastly the one that has been getting the most use is a DIY alcohol stove. The alcohol stove is simple and relaxing when you just need to boil some water.
Late to the party… Excellent video - thank you. To me the most important factor in the field is boil time. The reason the crux is so quiet if that it is sipping fuel and delivering a slower boil time. I’m sure not everyone agrees, but in most situations I don’t mind a little noise for a faster boil. What Id be curious to see is consumption. In a 10 day hike you don’t want to have to take extra fuel to feed the rocket… thanks again !
Fun video! I still haven't switched over to one of those types of stoves yet. Love my JetBoil. I tend to knock over the pot too easily if I don't have a locking mechanism.
Hahaha can’t say I haven’t done that once or TWICE! Who knows! 😂 🤦🏻♂️ We used a Jetboil for a year or so but it always took up so much room and was heavier. Not a hater though!
Nice show down Taylor! I saw JK's vid but I don't think he ever fired it up so we could listen. Tbh it doesn't sound as quiet as JK is making it out to be. It still has some zip on the sound levels! Learned a lot more about the Crux from your vid however so thanks. I'm more interested in a boil time test and total amount of fuel used but that's the great thing about these vids, they're all subjective. JK also likes it b/c of the bigger burner for cooking up food in the back country so it might be better for that. I like doing time trial videos and plan on doing more, I'm a gear nerd for sure!
Thanks man. As I said in the video I couldn’t really notice a boil time difference not that there isn’t. I just decided to skip it. And what video did JK talk about it? I heard him talk about it on their podcast.
@@SouthernHike he made a video recently where he talked about it in more detail. Forget the name. He basically said he liked the burner size for cooking and how quiet it was. I haven't dabbled with more intricate meals in the backcountry but this seems like a good option for that 🙌
I purchased the crux lite for my son. We set it up in the kitchen to see how it works. My son went out in the woods, and it wouldn't light. It hasn't worked after being in the kitchen. Everyone in my area said it could not be repaired, and the company went out of business.
I do have a similar stove but it is just a cheap version, does the job and been reliable so far, so I am happy with it, especially as it is nice and light and easy to pack, cheers Alan
I had the Optimus during my thru hike, but really never really loved it. I had a problem with the valve handle staying open and the arms stuck and were hard to open and close. Would I get another one, yes. However, I went with the BSR stove and would not trade it for anything else. It does everything I need it to do plus it stores better than the Optimus in my pot. @@SouthernHike I just boil water for meals, so it does the trick. Getting the arms to open and close in sequence is a pain sometimes, but I like it overall better than my Optimus. Plus you cannot beat the price. Happy Hiking
I have been thinking about getting something a little bigger than my current stove. Maybe I should watch this video again and pay attention. Maybe. Lol.
Wow! What a nerd. 😆 Just kidding. Great side by side comparison, Taylor. I did notice a big sound difference in our stoves up on Cheaha. I may give the Crux a try. 👍
