Using Option football can be devastating against a defense. It’s important that every coach, has a good understanding of defensive fronts. If you can’t or choose not to learn all of them, then at the bare minimum, learn the ones that your team is likely to face against.
To become good at option football (regardless of triple option or gun triple) you must spend time working on the basics, the fundamentals. This gets us back to a point that I mentioned in a previous video about how large is your playbook: you should only carry 4-5 base run plays. I know that you have 10 or more different runs that you’d like to have available. I’d like to remind you that it’s not what you know and understand, it’s what your players understand and can execute.
For every one play, there are 6-10 defensive looks that you might get. Your linemen and quarterback must be familiar with all of these looks, or at least the ones that they’ll see throughout the year. Also, they will need to know how to block those fronts going to the left and the right side. Do you have enough practice time to teach 10 plays against 10 different fronts, going both left and right? Can your players get enough reps to become good against each front so that they can execute during game time? This is why you should minimize your playbook: so that you can maximize your time spent in practice.
Today we look at a few different fronts from a triple option and option football perspective. Some of these adjustments may use veer option rules. We utilize a base formation and drop motion, similar to what the under center flexbone triple option guys do. The main point is again, that you need a few simple rules for your offensive line to live by. Most of these guys aren’t rocket scientists, neither are you (probably). Keep it simple. A few plays with heavy repetition against the defensive fronts that you are likely to see. Remember, there are defensive guys out there foaming at the mouth trying to figure out how to stop the triple option.
What’s the defensive front that you love or hate to see?
