So many pieces of Batman history within this scene, especially with the Joker himself. Stagg Industries, a corporation heard in Arkham Knight. Joker’s Journal, something he also does in the 2019 movie. Joker becoming sane, White Knight. Joker becoming sane after Batman being gone, The Dark Knight Returns. That classic joke, the Killing Joke. Joker dying with a sharp object in his eye, The Dark Knight returns. They’ve definitely done their homework.
Stagg Industries is actually from the comics tho. It's a competitor to Queen, Wayne and Kord Industries. Its owner, Simon Stagg, has ties to organized crime, supervillains and illegal bioenhancement experiments
It’s actually happened in the comics before. Joker mortally wounds Batman and he falls into a river floating away. Joker realized that he didn’t have anything else to live for so he becomes sane and actually gets a girlfriend who moves in with him and they love each other and live happily for a while. Turns out Batman lived and was just recovering. So when Batman comes out of the woodwork to stop a crime (idk which one every crime ever has happened in Gotham), joker kills his girlfriend after seeing it on the news and returns to crime.
@@shocktrooperstudios659 joker doesn't even kill her, he actually hands her safely to batman in his final moment of clarity before he permanently reverts to his old self
Happens in the Dark Knight Returns universe too. After Jason's death, Bruce quits being batman for years, and the Joker goes catatonic in Arkham. When Batman returns, Joker instantly springs back into action as well.
The way Jason was so sweet and supportive to this random man’s problems in the beginning, but doesn’t hesitate literally seconds later to stab him straight through the eye says a lot about Jason’s morals as a character. He’s not edgy and cold as people like to pretend he is, he can be nice and funny and friendly to people he doesn’t think are evil.
He makes it clear that he doesnt want to kill every criminal, hell, he was a petty criminal as a child so he knows that some criminals are just people down in their luck and have no other choice. He just wants the unfixable ones like the Joker to die
@@guilhermehank4938 precisely, that's the whole point of one of his monologues. He kills the criminals who are either too sadistic to be left alive or the ones who won't follow his new guidelines on crime. Jason takes over the Gotham underworld in order to enforce as many innocents being left alone as possible.
@@guilhermehank4938 I feel like Jason Todd is a good criticism of both philosophies. Batman's and his own. There are definitely problems with the fact that Batman doesn't kill Joker but hey, why the fuck hasn't the state just even quietly had someone shoot him? And his own because while he's in the emotional state he's in during the movie. He's not fit to decide who lives or dies because he runs the risk of killing becoming his primary problem stopper.
He was uninspired at that point, grasping at nostalgia and reminiscing hoping to grab another moment the he craved, that he needed and knowing he would not get again. I think todd should of let him live in that cruel sadness it would of been a half-life for joker. But then again Joker insane or sane should of been executed long ago by law(like really). I also can't argue with what todd chose to do.....in that moment when suddenly face with the very person that caused him so much pain very, few people could just walk away and in the end he may of needed to do this for himself cause in the end that is who he was. Todd is not Bruce.
@@javiervasquez8995 If you play the batman games, I got the sense that he wanted to die but was not going to kill himself so he planed to do so much evil someone would kill him then batman saved him.....kind of giving him a reason to live in a twisted way because of the absurdity of it and forgetting why he wanted to die in the first place.
Seriously, if the GCPD weren't comic book cops, half the rogues wouldn't make it to booking! You'd get something like, "Argh! We hit this speed bump and that human scum that killed twenty of us broke his neck in three places! What shitty luck, right?"
It's a little thing but I like that Joker not only knows the difference between Batman and Nightwing in a bat suit, but clearly understands why he's doing it.
@@NicheXCC Adult Swim was already joking about that. Either that or cops would arrange something in prison not to mention that Joker pissed off lot of criminals as well.
Managing to stylistically combine Killing Joke, Death in the Family and Dark Knight Returns in one scene is damn impressive. And I love that they brought back John DiMaggio, my favorite non-Hamill Joker.
GCPD Officer: "HANDS IN THE AI- wait, is that guy you just killed the Joker?" Jason: "Yep." GCPD Officer: "Well, damn. Legally, I think we need to give you the key to the city or something now."
@@tek512 dude, Antifa literally means anti fascist, it was started at the beginning of WW2 from German civilians who wanted to overthrow hitler, many young people died standing up to hitler. So unless Joker has killed nazis and I don't know about it, no, the comparison is not valid
I just love the change of Jason's facial expressions as joker tells his joke, like before the joke it comforting, and brotherly look which is then followed by a blank stare as Jason tries to process his memories and coming to terms with the fact that the one person responsible for so much pain in his life is just there sitting next to him confiding in him like a friend, to a firmer look of pent up anger that he is about to unleash
Well I don't think he'd have unleashed it had the Joker not come back to life when he realized who he was talking to. He smiled like a psycho and that's how you knew it was about to begin again. But Jason stopped it right there.
Let's be real: Jason would never do time for this. Yes he will get arrested, yes there will be something resembling a trial (I pity the prosecutor who takes this case, because their career is over), but there is NOT a jury in Gotham, let alone the world, that would convict Jason
Naw, Jason would walk. Joker is so hated and feared, no one cared about him. The rest of the Arkham crew would be glad he's dead and there's no one other than Harley that would care enough to try to intimidate the jury. Jason would walk. But he'd probably not be welcome in the BatFamily again cause Batman is insane in his own right.
@@theotherguy21 they really should use him more, especially now because Mark Hamil is no longer voicing Joker (until he returns for the 10th time after he was "done" with the role)
@@noirrugger shit i would of done more than stabbed him in the eye 😂😂 if my dad was batman and joker killed him that knife would of hit his head, eye, chest etc 😂😂
For some reason, this stands to me as such a beautiful scene. So much tension in telling a simple joke. The music, the dialogue. This one part feels like a masterfully crafted moment
I wanted to believe jason actually wanted to test if the joker actually reformed, after knowing from his smile, jason think that he is beyond saving, and ended the guy before he made another move to torture him, since joker knew jason is alive, he can become joker again, since now he has another guy to toy with aside from batman
@@illcommunications415 that didnt explain how he wait to attack or just go out, and shot him from several building across. He wanted to see the guy's reaction Otherwise he'd find other ways to kill him that didnt involve him being caught in the blue
It makes sense. Granted he always set out to kill him. But I think it was a genuine reaction to finding out, that the guy who tortured him was sitting right beside him the whole time. Once Joker realized that it was Robin 2, he realized (much like others have stated) that his second favorite punching bag; is still alive. Which, if he's still alive... There's a good chance Joker can use him as bait to draw out "the big man".
@@nicktaylor2391 what's interesting is how joker describes batman, that he "fights with him" not againts, its almost as if joker thinks he is a sparring partner or some sort to the bats
Yes, he’s probably good at acting and fitting in with the world he just prefers his ways with Batman around, like I said in another comment, Joker could get a physiological test and be found sane.
@@JulianAlvarado2006 It depends on the version. Batman TAS Joker is mostly sane. In The Batman he's clearly less in control of himself, as seen in the episode where they literally go inside of his mind and see it's pure chaos. The comics go back and forth on it depending on who's writing.
It's mentioned that Joker can't exist without Batman/vice versa. TAS, Joker purposely robs a bank just to draw Batman's attention and the moment he realizes Bats doesn't show he tells Harley and his goons to put the jewelry back. He goes along the lines saying "Without Batman, crime has no punchline." In Flashpoint, Bruce's death triggers his dad to become Batman and ironically, his mom to become the Joker. In the Red Hood, Batman mentions that if he were to kill Joker (or anyone for that matter) he'd go down a path he could never return from. Joker is even a representation of Bruce's inner insanity, a grown man in a cape going around fighting crime isn't sane and despite Bruce's tough demeanor he has a no kill rule. Of course, again going back to The Red Hood reference, Bruce going down a path of vigilantism would cause him to go insane just like Joker. To conclude, Joker becoming somewhat normal when Batman dies isn't a surprising thing.
@@IGamingStation It's more like Joker can't function without Batman (arguably, the same could be said of Riddler, even if that doesn't come up as much. The other Rogues probably couldn't care less), but 'viceversa' is wrong, Batman could still go on without a Joker around just fine.
At Jason’s trial Defense attorney: ladies and gentlemen of the jury my client did indeed kill the joker Prosecutor: he indeed did Jury after 3 minutes of deliberation: we find the defendant not guilty Judge: seems reasonable have a good day Mr. Todd
@@kalelpinas Red Hood was originally very much not a path to healing. Before new52, Jason got more and more unhinged that he'd give Two Face a run for his money. After new52, the path of Red Hood was indeed a path to heal as his made new allies who were good people and rubbed off on him. He reconnected with the Bat family before a new writer wanted to do their "Take away everything from Bruce, destroy Gotham, and things will never be the same again!" every few years.
Bingo! Is that your final answer? Let’s show em what they’ve won! A brand new live action DC movie, wow, better luck next time buddy. @@ThisHandleSystemCanGetNicked Tell me you don’t want more Cartoons and Video Games from dc instead of more shitty live-action dc movies (I’m quite aware the the new suicide squad movie was decent but one in like 7 shitty movies is not good).
Kind of like a fate that they both would run into the same dinner. Both in civilian get up, the joker knew he would kill him in that moment and was happy he could mess with batman one last time.
There's 3 references in this. The Killing Joke Joker telling Bruce his joke, Joker stabbed on similar way like in Dark Knight Returns and painted "normal" face in Batman 1989 movie.
@@prodeyj1 Jason has always had a reasonable temper. He just snaps at certain people who have done EXTREME harms. Dick is also hot tempered but fans refuse to call him that
@@prodeyj1 Exactly. As Robin he’s only seen losing his temper with some criminals. DC loves to ONLY focus on that rather than to flesh out how he’s helped other kids like him. His soft spot for women. Especially women who working certain jobs that leave them at the mercy of criminals. Also do you even remember how Dick treated Jason. He’s very mellow to his other brothers Tim and Damian because he knows he really fucked up big time by taking out part of his anger & frustration with Bruce at Jason. He only had Bruce and Alfred to lean on and Jay could barely bring himself to trust them. Kind of weird how they always brush that over
Why this scene is a masterpiece? 1. Jason calling Dick "big brother" 2. "Bat crap" 3. 2:25 this made me fall from where I'm sitting. Did he just call Joker "Friend"? 4. That voice change starting 2:45? Talk about creepy but genius. That background music is also right on point it just sent chills down my spine 5. "I'll tell the big man you said hello" Oh Jason, I just melted.
Dude, have you learned nothing from Batman??? Batman has got the balls NOT to kill Joker. Jason lacks the strength to fight that urge. Interesting character though, agreed.
@@thegreenmercenary Yeah. I totally get that ideology but given all the fucked up shit the Joker has done to Gotham and members of the Bat-family, I agree with Jason and his anger towards Bruce and the Joker.

This'll always annoy me about Joker. In a city like Gotham where the Joker had murdered hundreds and escaped so many times, I'm pretty sure the police would look the other way if someone killed the Joker.
it is already incredible the joker was never executed by any cop, one of his goons, another gotham criminal with more powers, any of the other heroes or anti heroes that actually kills, or even took a life imprisonment sentence or was sent to death row.
that answer is terrible, after years i only realised there's multiple endings, i thought this was a sequel to "redhood" but its a sh!ttt interactive dvd with multiple endings
I like that Jason's finally getting more love, thares an interesting dynamic you can set up between Bruce Dick and Jason, and how both Dick and Jason. Represent the 2 opposing extremes of Bruce's methods, or you could something similar but with Batgirl instead of Nightwing and show how people deal with trauma in different ways and how scince Barbra still had Dick, Bruce, Alfred and her dad, and Jason didn't and that affected how they turned out,
@@stevevigilante9944 Yes, but it has been a while since I read them. I think in Batman Eternal, Robin War and Batman & Robin Eternal. Just search for these and you will find it.
@@stevevigilante9944 You should also check out Batman: Three Jokers for more Jason and Barbara intercations and dealing with their trauma inflicted by The Joker
You know, there's been quite a few takes on Joker's end. Killing Joke, Dark Knight Returns, Arkham City, but it's the first not with Batman I find poetic. It's both a good exploration of Jason and Joker, which is I think the highlight of this movie. Says a lot about the power of this story, wish Red Hood would lend himself in better stories after these events in comics tho.
SPOILERS FOR _BATMAN: THREE JOKERS_ There's actually pretty good version of Joker's death in the first issue of the comic. Batman leaves one Joker with Jason and Barbara, who were supposed to turn him over to the police, while Batman went after another Joker. Joker starts taunting Jason and Jason ends up killing him. It was really satisfying to see Jason do it. Just another good version of Joker dying without Batman around.
@@buster3041 What other versions are there? I can think of Young Justice, but he hasn't been explored at all (yet), and the one from Batman: Ninja, who was okay but not great. What "other versions" were you thinking of?
I love how Jason seems to be the most normal one here, he basically watched his dad die but he heals from it with the right support. He slowly goes from cynical to actually taking it to heart with those pep talks, and he eventually opens up. But he still has those scars, it’s really good stuff and really human. I love stories where mental health can come first.
dammmmmnnnn. Crazy. I like this ending. Its a fitting end for Joker. And for Jason. I always wondered what would happen if Jason actually killed him. This is better than i could’ve ever imagined
To be fair, Joker HAS used doppelgangers before to misdirect others, often forcing innocent people by threatening them and their loved ones. The fact you just killed a person who happens to look like Joker doesn't mean, in the law's eyes, you have killed the REAL Joker.
@@josegregoriobencomogomez4958 It's still a crime.I don't think these people understand the law system. Is it bullshit?Sure. I can't stop rewatching this scene... its literal perfection. The smile... that damn smile... "...Boy Wonder... :D" Its just so unfortunate so many people will miss out on this scene because they didn't get the interactive version of the movie.
Can you get an Academy Award for voice-acting? Because this the THIRD time I’ve watched this and John DiMaggio’s delivery gets more spectacular every time!
What I like about this scene is the first time the Joker tells that joke, its after Batman offers to get him help. But the Joker declines. And now, as he's telling it the second time, he's actually trying to rehabilitate himself. Or... was.
This is a bit of a issue with comics. Due to the time, number of writers and different interpretations both official and fan, the idea of a coherent history is difficult to pin down. In this particular interpretation yes. In others no. All in all it comes down to what people feel is cannon. Or what is made cannon within a contained pocket universe of the Batman mythos. Its the same issue with Greek mythology, Arthurian legends or different telling's of Romance of the Three Kingdoms: when something goes on for so long everyone has their take. I mean if something is going to have a past, it might as well be multiple choice?
The canonicity of The Killing Joke is messy. Clearly, Joker did cripple Barbara in the canon. But, the story itself appears to be non-canon. Although, I don't think he killed the Joker in that story. It would weird for Batman to go from "Let me help you." to "I'm going to break your neck.".

@Mike Perez No he’s still crazy, he just is good as acting and fitting in with the rest of the world, they could do a physiological test and they’d find him sane.
@Mike Perez yeah I think right when he realized Jason was Robin that gave him a motive to keep being the joker which meant more death and chaos. I’m Jason’s Situation give all he’s gone through from Joker I can’t blame him for killing him
Something about this animation reminds me so much of Satoshi Kon. The way the animation lingers but still snaps quickly with action. The way the hand reaches for the knife in one seemingly smooth, calculated motion.
3:40 - 3:52 - from that conversation alone. With flashbacks...and Joker reawakening with a smile in that diner not realizing it was Jason. Creepy AF. Good job animation team. 😂
It may look different in design, but yeah. It is generally the same diner. So far as I know there's only one diner in Gotham that's generally used in most of the stories, and I'm pretty sure the one they're in is Pauli's Diner.
See, the impressive thing to me here is that Jason sat there and listened, realized, planned, and executed, all without a single twitch or out of place breath, not after the realization. Joker's realization came after, though, so the one flinch he did have went under the radar. Frankly, all this in mind...Jason is terrifying.
"Holy bat crap, Dick again!" Mmmm, that and "black mask was barbeque." Are my two favorite lines in this movie. edit: Holy nuggets, that be a lot of like there.
damn this is so good! The Killing Joke Reference, Joker’s lack of motivation being a crime lord bc batman is dead, Jason realizing he’s talking to the mad man himself, definitely want to watch this movie
I actually realized after rewatching the scene At first glance it seems crazy for the cops to arrest Jason for killing Joker But now I realize that Joker was in disguise, at first glance it looked like to bystanders and off duty police officers that Jason killed a random man, and they were doing their duty in stopping him Although some of the endings suggest otherwise how it turned out, my realization still explains the situation
1) Yes there idiots 2) the joke is the last joke he told batman at the end of the Killing joke story. In the story it was joker attempt to show some sort of sanity towards batman almost as if he making an effort to connect with batman. however the moral of the joke is that the insane guy will fall no matter if he belived the other guy will not cut off the light i.e the joker will be joker even if he accepts batman help to end it

That sounds like an intersting batman premise. The usual women screams, batman begins descending in the shadows and before he can get there. Bang-bang, and the robber is down. See how it would mess with batmans tempo so to speak, how he would respond after that. Like I could imagine him taking the thug to a hospital since he can get him there faster than an ambulance
Are you referring to the cops? Doesn’t change that Jason just slammed a butter knife through someone’s eye socket. Murdering a murderer is still murder.
They're really, really open-minded when it comes to accepting that living in a free country means not arresting every deranged clown laughing maniacally in a diner at 3 AM.
