Or Vaitzman (born 2006) is a young composer known for his work on Liszt musicology. This set of etudes was written by him in 2018.
1. Joy (C major) 0:00
A fast and bright little piece in ABCA form.
2. Owls (A-flat minor) 1:40
A very fast piece with a cadenza at bar 66. Includes a short waltz-like middle section in F minor.
3. Dancing Marionettes (G-sharp minor) 2:53
Mostly waltz-like, and modulates to A minor and then A major before returning to G-sharp minor.
4. Stormy Night (E minor) 4:32
Stormy indeed, with loud heavy chords and fast tremolos. The final measure includes the rarely-seen maxima note.
5. The Forest (C diminished) 5:48
An unusual mode with the key signature of E-flat, G-flat, and A-flat, before going into more conventional C minor and ending in the parallel major.
6. Sunflowers (B major) 6:46
A bright piece in B major, sunny even if not flowery.
7. Variations on a Theme by Victoria (D minor) 7:29
A theme written by an unknown "Victoria" and four variations, followed by a coda with a Picardy third.
8. Waltz (B minor) 9:00
A waltz written in an unusual mensuration sign rather than conventional 3/4. Includes a cadenza at bars 309-310 before repeating the waltz.
9. Prelude (C minor) 10:20
Another waltz-like piece in its first section, before going to a section in 4/4 including a modulation to the parallel major.
10. Storys [sic] (A minor) 12:26
A piece in two parts, the first in 3/8 and the second in 4/8.
11. Melody (C-double-sharp major) 13:42
A bright little waltz-like piece in the very unusual key of C-double-sharp major, with the extreme key signature of 14 sharps. This piece was featured in my video on extremes of conventional music notation: • Video
12. Grace Notes (D-sharp minor) 14:57
The piece begins as a waltz before a cadenza occurs at measure 442 leading into a faster section at 446. It moves to C major, and ends in that key.
13. Curiosity (C major) 16:25
This piece opens in 7/16, calm and slow. It then changes to 12/8 and F major, including massive arpeggios and cadenza-like tuplets.
14. Finale (E major) 17:44
A bright piece to finish off the set, ending with a quotation of the first etude.
In addition to these 14 etudes, there are unfinished sketches for two more, numbered 15 and 15a (although the score says 16).
15. Lento (E major) 19:44
A slow and calm piece consisting of a short melody played twice with accompaniment and a short coda.
15a (16). The Golden Owl, Early Version (G-sharp minor) 20:18
A fast but short piece in which one or both hands is playing 16th notes at all times until the coda. The entire piece is played twice, but the repeat is not taken the second time.
