In this interview, recorded in Liverpool in 2021, Ingrid Spiegl discusses the life and work of her late husband, Fritz Spiegl (1926-2003), giving insights into his childhood in Austria, his education in Britain after his arrival on the Kindertransport, his time as a flautist in the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and his general love for the city. The interview also covers Spiegl’s work as an impresario, including his hilarious April Fool’s concerts, his recovery of Donizetti’s opera Emilia di Liverpool, his friendships with other emigre musicians and artists and his illustrious career as a radio broadcaster and author of books about music, football and language.
Ingrid Spiegl was born in Liverpool in 1949. She was educated at a convent school and then studied art. In 1971, during her final year at art college, she took a job at Scouse Press, the printing business run by Fritz Spiegl, who became her husband in 1976.
