Well said!! If I was still living in South Africa, I would head to Orania to live, for sure. We got out in 1994 because we could see the writing on the wall and thank God we left when we did. My father was a boer through and through and he taught his children about patriotism, discipline and respect. We never left because we wanted to, we left because we felt we had no other choice. It's a pity we didn't stay and move to Orania. It's too late now. Been living in the UK for 19 years.

Orania, a small Northern Cape town between Hopetown and Petrusville, is internationally known, because there is an exclusive white Afrikaner community living there. Orania was originally an unfrequented, nameless settlement of the Department of Home Affairs. It lies on the bank of the Orange River. Secede, or rather, the Afrikaner Freedom Front, bought the land in 1991 and called it Orania. Professor Carel Boshoff, the father of Orania, was the son-in-law of Dr HF Verwoerd, Prime Minister of South Africa in the 1960’s, and more well known as the Apartheid leader. Carel Boshoff’s son, also Carel, took it over from his father. Carel Boshoff senior has recently passed away. The total population is more than a thousand, and it is growing annually. The ‘Small Giant’, what Orania’s symbol is called, depicts everything. The ‘Small Giant’ represents a small man, who rolls up his sleeves, and on his own steam does everything that is necessary to establish his own future. Orania is an Afrikaner cultural and political movement to preserve the Afrikaners’ heritage and ensure their future. At least, that is how it is described in their desires. But, to what lengths will Oranias go to achieve that? Archive material. Prof Carel Boshoff, founder of Orania, “For the Afrikaner nation to continue living on in Africa as a nation, there are three conditions that he must have. The first is an own piece of land, the second is self-determination over own institutions, and the third is self-work with him executing his own work. And, it must be built from scratch out of the ground, if the Afrikaner is serious about his future.” The nerves are troubled when someone visits Orania for the first time. You expect an over-dose of racism, political hot-headedness, marching boots, and be caught in a type of concentration camp. Ha ha, watch out. This town is so small that you can easily drive past it. Small it can be, but has made big headlines, and were mostly negative. Now one can wonder, “How can these abandoned streets provoke so much criticism?” Lida Strydom, Orania’s Information Official, easily answers difficult questions. What makes Orania different? In Orania we also have the same language, culture, and religious history. The only thing that differs is the working together. We use our own people for all the work in Orania. Why the Northern Cape? We must get an area that is populated by us, where we can form the majority. And, this Northwest Cape was the area that the research pointed out would be the best for the whole project. Years ago there was an initiative to do it at Morgenzon. The Orania workers worked very hard there and tried very hard, but it simply did not work out because there are too many black people, too many other population groups. A Racist town? We know of various journalists who are specifically sent to Orania to scratch out racism. Orania is not free from racism, just like Pretoria, Bloemfontein and Potchefstroom isn’t free from racism. But, in our nature we are not racist. Are other races and languages welcome? How are people selected? The selection process is actually a dependent, information process. That is to explain to people what Orania is. And, that people aren’t disillusioned after staying here for a time. I think that’s the most important reason. That’s not to say you may not, and you are welcome. I reckon it’s inclusive, it’s not exclusive. The person must at the end of the day decide for himself if he will fit in with the ideal.

Orania is a genuinely integrated community. The guy who removes the garbage, or cleans the streets, or fixes the ruins, is the same guy that sits next to you at church on Sunday. But, we all know each other, so we do well to each other. It is actually a privilege to be in such a community, where one doesn’t have to pay for everything. Everything is not measured in money. A person feels maybe ‘cool’ in Orania, therefore many whites who can’t find work or who were traumitised by crime look for a place here. (Welcome to Orania. Secure future for our people!) These people are called refugees. There are definitely people who come for the whole ideal, and what it’s understood to mean. But, these days what we get more and more are refugees. Resident. The poor Afrikaners, the real ones who are farmers, would come here in the middle of the night with bags, and we must accommodate them. (Own ground. Own work. New future.) The law of Orania is helping yourself. Many desperate whites come to Orania with all their possessions in a carton box to this small town. They are accommodated for two weeks, wherein they must get a job and a place to stay.

If we have a million Ora in circulation, and that we have, and more than that, then we have a million Rand in the bank. Last year I think we had something like R400000 in Oras that went out of Orania, which never came back. The people buy it as souvenirs, take it with them, and the money stays in Orania. If you look closely at the Ora you’ll see that it is full of symbols. Everyone, from the hundred Ora note to the ten Ora note, has its own symbols that are brought up on it. There are two schools that parents can send their children to. A boarding school also accommodates children from outside the settlement. There is the CVO, or Academic, School that uses the classical teaching methods, where the teachers stand in front of the class and gives classes to the children. They focus on other things that People Schools would focus on. People School has a unique approach, driven by computers, where the child takes full responsibility for himself. He doesn’t have a teacher for the class. Classes are not given to him. He must determine his own way how he will study. A child of ten years learns to plan a full day’s work. Wynard Boshoff, Principle: People School. Every child works at his own pace and on the subjects that he gets a chance to at this stage. The result that we get is children who take much more ownership of their teaching career. They are not busy making the teacher’s day by doing their work. Just leave them be, they aren't hurting anyone, they haven't kicked anyone out, they just want their own land, they can't return to Europe they have nowhere else to go. Just leave them alone.
Rob Porter is the voice of reason. What the blacks will hate is if Orania is a success. Especially with the rest of South Africa and Africa such a mess under black control. For that reason they will want to destroy it - a white island of success in a black sea of failure would be too much of an indictment.

Afrikaners constitute a despised minority without any real political influence. Having completely lost their former dominance they no longer pose a serious a threat to anyone. On the contrary. Their continued existence as a distinct people is under permanent threat of a hostile majority intent on their destruction. In sight of these facts one must indeed be a very spiteful person not to feel any respect for their effort at saving what little remains of their collective identity. I, for that matter, am deeply impressed by their determination, inventiveness, patriotism, and resilience in face of so much resentment and undeserved scorn. This is the point. In apartheid, the Afrikaners paid (as it was convenient for them) what they wanted to the natives, to do the less qualified work. But they did not accept that these workers lived near them or in the same neighborhoods. It started wrong. Therefore, it could not sustain itself in the long term. It had to end. Perhaps Orania is looking for the arrangement that was lacking at the beginning, when the old regime was formed, in 1948. Good future for the South African nation, with prosperity. (Dit is die vraag. My kids go to a CVO school, the same curriculum as mentioned in the documentary and they receive far superior than what is available in the government schools today. They learn their own relevant history, they study the Christian Religion as part of their studies and the CVO schools had more than a 96% pass rate last year compared to state schools barely making a 70% pass rate. The sad part is the current state sponsored education is worse than Bantu education in the 80's, and thats progress?
I can agree. The state sponsored education system needs a complete refurb. It makes me think of that song 'The Wall' by Pink Floyd, with "We don't need no education." That was ahead of its time. When I did the English transcribe of the video, it was the first time I'd even heard of a CVO school.
I've sent them an e-mail asking them if I can join them. I was born in South Africa but left in 1994 just after the elections. I've lived for nearly 20 years in Scotland but I've always wanted to go home but never wanted to live in the "new" South Africa. My dad was a boer and my mum was born in Scotland so I had quite a diverse childhood. But I long to go home. I miss the people, the Afrikaans language, the food, the sun, the land. Here's hoping that they will accept me......:)

Tolerance gets very difficult when you have more than 140 laws excluding you from being economically active because you are White. I grew up without load shedding, 2 USD to the Rand, potholes got filled, street lights, visible lines on the roads, a drivers licence in my ID book that didn't expire, my gun licence in my ID didn't expire, no electric fences, no farm attacks, unemployment of 75%, grants for the lazy and incompetent, corruption and state coffers looted etc. This is a failed state and you cannot sugarcoat the state of this country. This "Indian reservation" has to evolve as soon as possible for a country, attracting to the region thousands of white scattered throughout South Africa, beginning with the poor. If not will just be an eccentric luxury condominium.
For these people, Germany, France and the Netherlands were the past, South Africa the present and Orania is the future. Black people should not worry about this small country. They should be concerned to review its colonial borders and constitute a single black country, a United Africa. In the future, a United Europe and a United Africa will combine what to do with the whites born in Africa and black people born in Europe.
While the Afrikaners are definately very close to Dutch culture, I think they have evolved into their own people since the late 18th century on. The Afrikaners have lived there longer than the MAJORITY of the other peoples in the area, with perhaps only the Bushmen and Xhosa living there earlier. I also don't think that the Netherlands, which is already one of the most heavily overpopulated countries on this planet, can take in 3 million Afrikaners, and we wouldn't want that either considering Afrikaners speak their own language and are generally very christian and conservative compared to the Netherlands which is one of the most irreligious progressive countries on the planet.

My problem was with the film having an English **title** and not having corresponding English subtitles. It's misleading and probably wasted a lot of people's time.

I think if a group of people choose to preserve their culture, hey they are entitled to do so. There should be a place where you should call home, I am cool with it!!The Afrikaaner poeple are South Africans too. Remember many thousand years ago only Kooisan people occupied Southern Africa and then the Bantu people migrated from Northern africa to Southern Africa. So the Kooisan are the true rightful owners of this part of the world but they are not the ones chasing all the other races out. So since we are all South Africans let us all live happily within our wonderful country.

@@austrobok2958 Many people around the world are interested in knowing more about Orania, like for ideas, so a translation is needed! And, Orania does want to be more in contact with the international community.
They want go off and separate themselves from the problems and live independently well then fine, more crime and uncertainty for the rest of us. But no seriously, lets fix the problems instead of calling out people who wan't don't want to deal with them. And most may very well be racist, but even if they are, they still have the right to live in any way they choose.

My point is simply that ALL Afrikaners (or any1 else) cannot be grouped together with the Boers as I explained earlier. Neither is the term Boer interchangeable with Afrikaner any less than Scottish is with English & even many Scottish are wanting independence from England. According to the Oxford dictionary the word ‘discrimination’ means “recognition & understanding of the difference between 1 thing & another” People make distinctions because they value 1 choice over the other. Freedom does not exist when there is no opportunity to choose between different options. To ban "discrimination" would mean that people are not allowed to make distinctions as it concerns the nature of a particular discrimination & not the principle itself.

It is important for them to speak only Afrikaans. If they spoke English or French, silly white liberals would try to move in and "reform" them. A lack of blacks means they probably have little or no crime, HIV/AIDS, ebola, or other traits that go hand in hand with a black population, and they want to keep it that way. If speaking a language the blacks do not understand helps in that objective, then go for it.

Its just to make distinctions when one’s own interests are served & success IS NOT based on the oppression of others. Racial Discrimination should only be illegitimate when people deliberately disadvantage others based on race which is certainly not the case in Orania however one cannot say the same for the country of South Africa with the ANC and their B.E.E policy as it oppresses white people based on their race. It should be outlawed as it is directed at intentionally harming others (whites)
Forgotten history lol I think you need to learn SAs history & how organisations set about deliberately erasing the Boers identity under Afrikaner nationalism. The Boer are a separate nation of people that have a different history to the Afrikaners. You confuse these 2 groups together then ask "in what way do i defend the macro state of South Africa" It is very important to know the history of a region & a people to understand how we got where we are today.
Mixing cultures has failed, forcing people to live amongst eachother when living different ways of lives will create conflicts. Besides look at the crime rates when Apartheid was gone, these people live segrated so they can live safer and happier lives. Personally I´d think a Afrikaner state wouldn´t be a bad idea for these people.
The only reason the ANC and the rest have a issue with a small town like Orania is the very fact that it will show all the failures as African leaders who've been in power for 25 odd years in Southern Africa . The small little town in the middle of know where which has its own Currency . Health facilities, businesses, water, housing etc. This is a clear image to how a small minority of people can live in a safe and beautiful place without interference from criminal and political vultures who seek to destroy a once so powerful southern African country. The underlying fact that White people don't know or want to except is that, the reason why the country is going to shit is because white people didn't teach black people. To make an anolgy if you were an experienced f1 driver and you gave the wheel to a learner driver who you didn't bother to teach how to drive, there is almost no way you could drive as good as the former driver

It's simple, the black majority in South Africa hates whites and publicly sings about killing them all. Attacks on white farmers happen all the time and whites are forced to move out.
I must admit this documentary did make me reassess my preconcieved notions of Orania. Although I will never support the idea of segregation, I do belive in the idea of creating a community in which hard-work, self-sufficiency, safety and strong community ties are prevalent.
It’s not segregation in itself that you should support. It is self determination. It’s about the freedom to choose. If you don’t have the freedom of association you have a forced association. Integration is positive when it’s voluntary. When it’s forced it becomes negative. It’s the same with segregation. It’s not that segregation was bad in itself it’s that Apartheid was forced segregation. This town is growing because people are volunteering to live there. They are going out of their way to live somewhere it is not easy to live (even as a European) and life their life the way they want to. It’s about autonomy.
I believe in private land ownership, there land/house there rules, good luck to them it looks like a lovely safe place to live, with the crime rates over there more communities like this would be good, after all there’s many many towns there where whites cannot go so it’s perfectly acceptable.
