Repotting orchids is one one the most enjoyable things. I’m not sure why it is so satisfying. The fat roots. Mixing moss bark and leca. The holes in orchid pots. I don’t know I just really like it. I’m a orchid nerd.

Wow that coconut husks protected most of the roots. Im from pacific island and We used coconut husks in our gardens and pot plants and works really well, because coconut husks are natural products 👌.

I just saved 2 orchids and I used bark that way the roots can breath better and I also use clay pots made especially for orchids. I have not counting the 2 orchids that I just bought, 7 orchids and they are doing well since I removed them from sphagnum. Love your videos and green house.

Thanks for this. I like how you allow the roots to stay in their shape. When I first began with phals, I lost a lot of initially healthy roots post repotting, due to trying to clean them too much, taking them apart from each other and such. I've since started doing it the non disturbance way and now I get no more root loss post potting up. Sometimes, if they've attached or grown out through holes, I leave them in the pot and just shake, tease and rinse out the media (like one of your old videos doing the phal in the ceramic pot) then refill with fresh. Phals so much happier now : )

Great video. Subscribed. When I repot, I use orchid bark, with charcoal and dolomite pieces. I use seashells over the drainage, to allow the pot to drain but keep the small pieces of dolomite and charcoal from going out. I also wait for a phal to bloom out before repotting. Sometimes, I wait months and months (like December to the next September), but it's worth it. Flowers are the reason I have plants!

Your videos are SO helpful and informative! I only have 2 phalaenopsis orchids, but they are super healthy. I watched several of your videos last evening, so I felt confident enough to repot a recently purchased Phal I got from Home Depot. Glad I did. In the center of the roots, I found the original peat/potting soil pod packed around the roots, and they were beginning to rot. I repotted it according to your advice, and am looking forward to seeing it thrive!

I wish I had all my phal's that I had to trash over the years just can not grow them So now I am trying something different they are the pickiest plant I ever tried to grow. I have cleaned out old moss and also use a 5 gal. bucket to also wash the roots..I can grow almost anything but them.a car ran over my legs now there gone and I have plenty of time to try growing them again. .thanks for the information.

When i repot phals i take an overview of the plant and decide if the phal is healthy and big enough for a larger pot. The ones that have a root system to big for my regular size (12cm) pots but lacks a big and strong leaf growth (like the one in the video) i most times cut of the lower parts of the roots to fit the plant in the same size pot as it come from. I also cut back the oldest part of the root base if needed but makes sure i have plenty of fresh healthy roots above the cut. I always cut the oldest (lowest on the root stem) roots first to give room for younger roots. Phals tolerate cutting back of roots very well. Bending and twisting roots to make them fit into the pot not so much because fractures in the epidermis will make the root prone to fungus attack and general root rot. Freeing roots from pot media can also cause soft tissue damage. The closer to the root stem a fracture or bruise sits the larger the negative effect on dehydration. A stable warm temperature will promote root growth a make the plant bounce back faster. Cut more - handle less This has worked for me and i encourage others to at least test this out on a few phals before dismissing the technique :)

Thank you for your input. I am new to phals, they seem to do great for me until I repot them. I just repotted one, and immediately the lower leaves started to dehydrate and wrinkle. I have had this one about a year or so, it has never rebloomed, but it has put out 5 or 6 new leaves. I hope this one makes it! I will use more caution when handling the roots from now on. solid logic, the phal I got for my sister, but she has killed so many so let me have it, has cracks on lots of the aerial roots. most still have the growing tips . yet to repot.

Install a garbage disposal in your sink, lead the pipe to the compost bin, and whenever you will wash organic in the sink, everything will be ground into a watery paste, and will make you a golden grade compost in a few months. I every year grow 200+ dahlias, and every day I get about 10 gallons of fading flowers, ready for compost, but they tend to stay, and not rot, dahlias are very resistant, so I send them trough a disposer, right in the compost bin, and the fine paste turns into heavy and rich compost in a few months. Ad it never seems to fill the bin, because it is already a paste, and when it rots it compacts and you can put 100 gallons and much more, and you will never fill the bin completely. I tel you, you should really try this. Especially if you have a garden, then you will never have to buy compost ever again.

I am brand new to orchids (as of last night when I found two big ones that someone was throwing away and decided I was going to save them) and I’ve been learning a lot (all day long!)… I haven’t come to any concrete conclusions yet but I did come up with an idea. I decided to mount one on an upside down clay wit som Sphagnum moss ....I’m hoping the clay pot and moss will soak up just the right amount of water. ?I think I might hang it too. This might be a terrible idea or ingenious… I haven’t seen it done yet, so....,I’m thinking it might be terrible. But While I’m learning ...and waiting for my Bark to arrive, that is where he will (hopefully) live for now. THANK YOU-for all the info!

Hi Brad, I recently received my first orchid as a gift and have enjoyed watching your videos on caring for this beautiful plant. In one of your videos you made reference to a cleansing mixture that you Use to clean and disinfect your orchids. This is a solution that you made yourself with alcohol, water and dish soap...can you please provide the proportions of each. It's been said that experience is the best teacher. I will take this a step further ; experience is al- ways the best teacher. People it seems generally believe that orchid-care is perhaps a recipe. Like that dish that you are dying to try, rarely it seems do things ever work out that way. Another frustration is of course the fact that one person says one thing and another... Frustration. Plants sometimes it seems can have almost opposite methods of care. For example, orchids and cacti. Gather all the 'ingredients' you can and resign yourself to the fact that You are the cook. Plant-care is challenging enough without fools like myself who insist on 'micro-enviroments' for very different plants housed in the same area - don't try it, unless you have plenty of hair to pull out.

Hi there. Love your videos . Thanks for all the help.i don't have a green thumb at all but I love plants and orchids are one of my favorites. Just bought one a few weeks back and noticed it was potted in all very , very compact moss. So I decided to re potted (hoping I don't lose it). And found some good green roots but most of them are whitish/yellowe roots. And was wondering if it's bad or if there's anything I need to do before repotting. Your green roots are okay your white roots are just not getting sunlight so they're white but they're okay. Check your medium everyday and when it's mostly dry is when it's good time to water.

Thanks so much for your videos! I'm still very new to gardening in general and I picked up a phalaenopsis at my local grocery store. I've had it for about a month and it's doing fairly well, if what I've learned from your videos is any indication. You mentioned waiting until after the bloom to repot, which I plan to do. Any tips on the best way to groom up the flowers that begin to wilt? Most are still fine but there are a couple that are getting droopy. There are 2 spikes so I don't want to risk any wasted energy, especially since I'm not super confident in my ability to properly care for my favorite house plant.

When you watch this video his p h a l sure looked healthy didn't it? If you just got your new p h a l if it's wilting it might have got just too dry. There's inside roots and there's outside Roots I call Aerial Roots, I water my medium and then after that I spray the outside roots with Rainwater every day. slowly it'll dry out and when it's mostly dry you can water the medium again don't go by a schedule of watering every 3 days, go by when it needs it when it's dry. Don't leave water in the bottom dish I killed an orchid overnight by doing that. Mine gets bright light but not really direct sunlight yeah, basically if you can mimic what they get in the wild you're doing good - I've always heard if you're happy temperature wise they're happy. Just type on here how you take care of your orchid everything you do and if you do something wrong he'll catch it - I've had problems with scale and mealybugs are always a possibility. I like orchid bark or coconut husk and sphagnum Moss together lots of bark and just sphagnum Moss tucked-in to hold moisture. Good look, sometimes you lose the bottom leaves but that is just normal it's growing.

Seems folks could use a bit larger pot; most repottings seem to be in bit too small a pot; have had success with the bit larger size with bark leaving room for it to breath - if that makes sense.

How have you tested old medium and determined it to be acidic? Did you test, say, old sphagnum and new sphagnum ? I see that acidic claim tossed around a lot. Still haven't found anything to back it up. I have my own theory and still agree that old orchid medium is bad. More orchids die from over watering, than anything. When bark/sphagnum breaks down, it becomes compacted/denser, less air and more water. As you noted, roots aren't found much in the middle. So old broken down medium with little air and not drying out would contribute to crown rot. Btw, you say your water is soft/acidic. I say that THERE is the acidity in your pot if using tap water. Just like my water is hard/alkaline. I could (ok, did so, many many years ago 🙄) amend the soil or pot with peat and additives and stuff for acidic soil for blue hydrangea flowers and other specialties. Water with my 8.0 water and voila! Pink Nikko blue hydrangeas and pissed off blueberries. 😂 So tell me how you've tested... if you have. When I find a rescue in bad sphagnum, I'm going to run distilled water through it, catch and check with TDS AND PH meters, then again after repotting with fresh sphag (hydrated with distilled water. I don't know if this will actually show anything but at least I finally took a stab at it.

I have an orchid that is several years old. I believe it needs to be repotted as the roots are spilling out of the pot by about 2-3 inches and it looks like it only has bark around the inside of the roots. It is still blooming though. It seems as though it is almost always blooming. Should I repot now or wait?

Sounds like you have a real green thumb, if it's several years old you're probably right the medium is breaking down and it would like a repot - it might shock the flowers. I use a mixture of orchid bark or coconut husk and dots of sphagnum moss 2 hold moisture good luck.

What helps hard water? I'm concerned about salts from my water softener, but also concerned about hardware deposits. I'm not sure which is worse. Inside my house I have water filtered through the water softener, outside is straight up hard water. Do you have any advice? Thank you.

I'm having a problem with the new clay pots. Careful not to over water yet pot has developed a thick layer of minerals that I have to scrape off for it just to reappear. Would love to know cause. I was told plastic keeps moisture longer than clay pots. Any idea about the mineral build up?

I always heard clay pots will contain more moisture (a lot of people love and swear by them and I think the only reason why people went to plastic was for photosynthesis of the roots) as for the water crystal build up sometimes it could be fertilizer or it could be hard water - try using Rainwater.

Great video! I’m going to get busy getting my orchids into a more healthy state. My question, however, is about the plants hanging over your head in the video! I used to have one and loved it! I bought it from a lady from Florida while at the (are you ready??) Rattlesnake Rodeo in Opp, AL! She did not know the name but it was obviously a pitcher plant of some sort in a hanging form. What is it and where can I get one? I’ve not been back to the rodeo.....sometimes once is enough, you know!!?! Thanks and thanks for the informative videos!

Hi, the leaves and the roots are green but the bark is brown. Is my orchid dead? There are no new leaves from the last 2-3 months. I want to revive it. Please help.

Is it OK to repot any orchid while blooming? Because this is what stops me with my orchids, that they are keep blooming or bring new spikes but sometimes i see they have some probs because some new spikes just not doing well. I see the original pot is way too small and i already purchased new bigger ones, more wide so they would be more stable for tall plants and more space for large root system what already outgrew the small pot i purchased the plants with but what can i do they keep blooming and blooming and bringing new flower spikes if the old dyed off and i just keep postpone the repot what is really due.

Everybody reading this right now is very jealous that you're getting all these blooms. Maybe try reporting them when they have a new Spike, usually they bloom and then stop. I always go to a little bigger pot just to give the roots a little more room.

I'd go ahead and repot it if it's a phal and the medium is old and broken down. I have one right now in bloom, but when the blooms die, I plan to repot immediately since it's in the tightly packed moss growers use.

Hello Brad, I have a question.... I have had a vanda that wasn't doing well. Even though I watered it 2x a day, it was dehydrated. I put an empty plastic post around it hoping it would keep some humidity closer to the roots. That didn't help either. I bought a neofenitia falcata and potted it using the Japanese method. Since they are classified as vandacious I thought I might do the same sort of thing with my vanda too and brought it inside and put it on my east facing window sill. I don't have go water it as often it seems to like it's new home. My question is have you ever done this? Have you ever heard anyone else of using this method? Do you think it will thrive in the sphagnum?

Do you let your vanda soak? I soak my vanda in a bucket when I water my vanda. Now is summer, but I water like two times a week and it has green root tips everywhere. I live in PA and it is inside my house. I also just have it on a hook and not in a basket either. I find that fungus sets in when it's roots aren't in 100% air. My neofinetia is also in the same manner. I just didn't like the japanese method. I wanted to see the roots at all times to monitor them.

I see coconut husk medium in the pot and I use this and really liked it with sphagnum moss but if you're talking about anything else it would have to be the pitcher plants hanging above his head.

you could get a bigger pot, stuff them in, leave them be or cut them off. Cutting them off is risky and could damage the whole plant if fungus or bacteria attack the wound, BUT you could do it and it could be just fine :) after cutting the roots, do not water it for some time to help the wound heal

The inside roots are normal and the outside roots are called aerial roots, I mist my aerial roots with rainwater every day and they're loving it, I water my medium when it's almost dry and I'm having real good luck.

Have you tried Semi-Hydroponics with LECA instead of Sphagnum Moss Brad? It would be nice if we had your opinion on this LECA trend :-)

Hello, first time watching your vids. How long does it take for a new spike to present itself if one follows all the rules? I don't have the luxury of having a greenhouse, and run out of space quite quickly. I live in zone 10 if that helps.

I have four and right now they're growing roots and trying to be healthy, I heard if you drop the temperature like 10 degrees at night it helps them to produce a spike but nothing drastic.
