Basically the message is: mental disorders aren't a product you buy and sell. Mental disorders aren't about feeling sad when something SAD FUCKING HAPPENS. Mental disorders are not for you to use to get notes on tumblr because no it's not Tragically Beautiful, it's sad and it's awful.

Let's Play A Game: Can you diagnose me? #1 I've heen having problems with stuff. And I go off track. I can't think straight. Ha, straight? Because I'm gay. Well, part gay, because I'm bisexual. Did you know that Halsey was bisexual? Or I think she's bisexual, people say she is. Oh! And Melanie Martinez, I think she's straight, but I don't know. I heard they're releasing new albums. Talk about new albums, when is Twenty One Pilots going to release a new album? I've been waiting for a while. Talk about waiting, I once waited for my mom to pick me up from school, but she took so long so I walked home. And there was this other time-----!!! #2 My family says I've been talking in my sleep, but I beg to differ. I was only injured in the war once, and came home after five years. Doctors haven't said there was anything wrong with me, only a broken arm. The war was scary, but I'm h-home now...... #3 Could you please stop yelling? I-It hurts my ears an awful lot. Wait, did you hear that? What's that? Tell me you heard that? Mom, mom! Are you seeing this? #4 Well, she liked me. It didn't mean I liked her back. Am I supposed to be mad or something? I mean, I didn't know it was supposed to be serious. I was just there for the fun. Oh yeah, my dad died yesterday. Sad? No, I would've killed him myself. Put him out of his misery. Can I go now? This is boring. I've got to go to work. #5 I can't take life anymore. Life is shit. I don't want to live anymore, I don't want to feel anymore. You don't understand! No one understands! They just say that, then they screw you over! I'm tired of being used. I'm just a burdon to the whole word. I'm sorry...... #6 No, it has to be like this! You can't just leave stuff lying around all the time. D-don't do that! I'll fix it. J-just go down stairs. I need to fix this whole room again, because of this chair. Just have to center everything, everything in it's place.... (the room is perfectly normal) #7 Thinking: Come on. You can do this. Just smile, wave, say hi. It's easy. No! Don't do that. What happened to being normal? Oh god, I think they're looking at me.... I think they're----- I can't do this. Too many people, too many people! Just get out of here.

Dear everyone, STOP ROMANTICIZING MENTAL DISORDERS. THEY ARE NOT SOMETHING YOU WANT TO HAVE. THEY ARE NOT BEAUTIFUL. Depression is not romantic. Cutting is not beautiful. Suicide is not something to fall in love with. OCD is not 'relatable.' The list goes on and on but I think you see my point. Sincerely, Everyone else

This performance was controversial and congratulations for that. It takes skill to strike the nerves of other people in such a way that is effective. This was a brave representation of one side of an issue that is definitely present. However, being tactful and respectful to people that do struggle with these things is imperative. Imagine someone who is depressed listening to this (where people are promoting this rejection of albeit a more "social" version of the disorder) and they are physiologically wired to just go too fast (ADHD). So, they're missing key points because it's loud and busy and stimulating and the depression doesn't help. So, while this did address something that is worth addressing, consider those that are caught in the crossfire, so to speak.

Fiona Johnson This is slam poetry. Like stated before by other commenters ( don't want to sound trite or like a broken record) Its perfectly acceptable to snap, clap, yell or stomp your feet ( as long as you don't hit your neighbors seat) during slam sessions. Though it can be annoying while watching a video, it's a compliment to the performer, letting them know that their performance art is relatable.

I get their point. However, being the mother of a O.D.D/ADHD son I can tell you that it is a Real disability. And medication does help. Though it has been a long process and still a long way to go...He is 11 now but has gone from a kid that was on a 2 hour day in kindergarten (and still was sent home early) who cussed out everyone, punching himself, destructive to everything he could be...to other grades where he threw chairs, more destruction of home and school property..having therapists, counselors, me sitting in the school, into a behavioral school for a yr, etc etc....to a kid that says he can concentrate better, one who enjoys life now instead of saying he wants to die, one who is not suspended (yes we have 504 and ieps- im not a lazy mother) every week of not multiple times a week. I broke down when everything else we all did failed and I had to resort to adding meds. Notice I said 'adding'. Not substituting for everything else. Before that, I posted what he goes through and everything I have tried through the yrs on about a dozen or 2 parents forums. Wishing and praying for a resolution. Everyone said I had done everything they would be able to think of. Some meds didnt work with him. It's a trial process. We have a good combo now but know eventually it will need to be edited. And that since day 1 we ate consistently working on a day where there will be no meds needed.

I think the point they were trying to make is not that mental illness/disorder isn't a real problem, but that society has glamorized and romanticized them to an absurd point. It's now seen as trendy to be depressed, and they're pointing out that that demeans people who truly do have mental illnesses and takes away from its seriousness.
@SAPHIREpinup
@SAPHIREpinup 9 лет назад
emilyandcats What sucks even more is for a society that has glamorized mental illness we still don't do enough about it for the people that ARE dealing with them. We still don't make enough strides to help people who are mentally ill/unstable so that we don't have somebody shooting up a first grade classroom or teenage suicide on the news every other week. We are a society that highlights and glamorizes an issue and yet does nothing to actually help it. It just seems so stupid and honestly really unfortunate.
@gamselly2456
@gamselly2456 9 лет назад
They understand that these are real problems, they were just trying to play on the fact that many people who say that they have "OCD" "ADHD" (etc.) they don't really have it . Because many people are like "well you know I pm really sad, I think I have depression" or "I'm so depressed right now" or "wow my anxiety is really acting up right now" because mental illnesses have been glamorized. A lot of people have begun to use mental illnesses like emotions. This has gotten really pathetic recently. People are such attention seekers that they go to the point of cutting themselves for no mentally reasonable issue. Okay,s o it's very hard to explain this. Personally, I've gone through depression (I've been diagnosed by two phycologists because I wanted to make sure I wasn't just exaggerating) and while I'm certainly getting better, I still feel the effects (aka random feelings of immense sadness for absolutely no reason, well I'm 13 so that might just be puberty, but when I feel like that I frak out wondering if anybody will ever like me, if I will be okay, etc. also I need at least 12 hours of sleep and have an incredibly difficult time getting out of bed in the morning and am still very sensitive to every little side comment/joke I hear, but anyways this isn't about me, I was just trying to explain my "credibility" I guess) anyways, I've personally never cut myself but I do understand what people who cut go through because I know exactly the infamous feeling that overcomes them when they cut, aka that feeling of emptiness, where you honestly don't feel anything, you're too sad to even be sad and you just feel absolutely nothing, which in my opinion is the scariest feeling in the world. But there are girls in my school who do it strictly for attention and praise. I know this because these are the same girls that diagnose themselves with practically every mental illness known to man because of one coincidental occurrence (aka oh no I skipped a breath walking into a crowded room, which "obviously" means I have social anxiety) they post pictures of themselves cutting and send them to their crushes and use it as a way of flirting, which is absolutely horrible. So that is what they were talking about, people like that who have "mental illnesses" only when it's convenient so that they can gain attention and sympathy. Anyways, I wish you the best of luck with your child

I'm a 15 year old girl who struggles with her ADD/ADHD and I understand what it's like be at your wits end and having to add medication to your life because nothing else was helping. I didn't known I had these disorders until I was 11. That's when life came crashing down completely. I took my medication because I was forced to. "Don't you want to get good grades? Aren't you grateful we put all this money into you?" Are the words that came out of my parents mouthes. At one point in my life I have up on grades and passing school. I didn't tell anybody I was intentionally failing, because how dare you? "We've put all this money into Catholic School". I was called lazy, unproductive, anything to rile me up. I pushed myself out of that fog once I hit eighth grade. I wanted to get out of my school with grades that proved I was productive and not just a lazy little pest. I was convinced once that my disorder wasn't real and I'm just a lazy person. I'm not, I'm smart and intelligent. Alright

slam poetry is different. It's like being at church. They're supposed to talk about things that will get the audience to react, like they're in church. At slam poetry you aren't limited to just snapping.
@Geniusidekick
@Geniusidekick 8 лет назад
It's etiquette. You're supposed to snap and they even say it before most events. It's like not putting your feet on the dinner table because it's rude when everyone else is trying to eat. You snap when other people are listening so you don't interfere with the message, or cause the artist to miss important rhythms in their presentation.
