Chad Ludwig created a Deaf and Police interaction training video with the Oregon Police Department for police officers and other responders to communicate when interacting with deaf or hard-of-hearing citizens by using American Sign Language, Voice Carry Out (VCO) devices, tactile signing boards, or written notes. To improve the safety of Deaf people and give them equal access, we can improve how they interact with police.
The training program builds a partnership and understanding between the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training - DPSST and Oregon’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities.

All police and emergency people should get the talk to text app. The phone is placed in front of them with the screen facing deaf person.. As they speak, the phone texts the statements made so the deaf person understands.

Please do not equate people speaking in Spanish, Tagalog, or American Sign Language as entertainment, and exotic. You are not praising or uplifting the Deaf when you do this. You are actually making us “othered” and degrading us and ASL. If you saw a gang member who is Deaf telling you they were going to do horrible things like kill or rob or beat you up, it would NOT look pretty or cool to you.

Oh, the irony of calling an American police department the Department of Public SAFETY

When they come to a home where someone has been threatened, and rescue them and arrest the perpetrator, they do create safety and enforce the law. Not all cops are evil.
