Great point! In re-watching this a couple times, I feel bad for him because he made a big mistake. If he stayed behind while the other defender went for the ball, he could have positioned himself to make the tackle. To be fair, I never played the game (I'm not even knowledgeable enough to be an armchair athlete) and have no idea what it's like to be in those situations in the moment, so I can't fault him for it. But as you say, I imagine he might replay this moment in his mind thinking he could have made a stop there.

Can someone explain why the safety and the corner made no attempt to tackle him? In 50 years of watching ball, I've never seen a mental error by 2 DBs like that. It looked like when 2 outfielders think the other one has the fly ball and neither makes an attempt to catch it....weird. Also, why didn't the safety 24 fire off at the 10, like you are trained to? Instead, he actually pulls up. Never seen quit like that, especially from a Stanford player.

@@rollercoasterfweak I'd say they probably should have gone for 2 and just tried to run it up the gut and told the RB to be clenching onto that ball with both arms. In that case it's very unlikely there would be a fumble recovery taken back 97 yards, but then you'd at least have a chance at going up by 3. I've seen crazier things happen than a team getting the ball back with 13 seconds and getting into field goal range. That's time for two mid range passes that could get potentially get them into field goal range. I'd say if there was less than 10 seconds then it would be more reasonable to just kneel the PAT because there wouldn't be time for two mid range passes. So it was a reasonable decision but probably not ideal.
