Since these oils are rare and expensive in our area, I tend to use Gliricidia leaves. It just grow everywhere but you can also use jicama leaves. Crush the leaves and mix with water, leave overnight, 1 pound of leaves per 20 litres of water. May add equal parts of oils and dishwasher soap to make the solution stick to the leaves easier especially in rainy days. For meallybugs, ferment boiled rice (10 parts water 1 part rice) to weaken the wax coating for deeper penetration, killine the pest, ferment for 10 days.
I have been a loyal garden fan of yours a little over a year now and you never fail me. My gardens, both floral and produce, have always been beautiful and the talk of the neighborhood, but you have helped me take it to the next level of stunning. I will always be a loyal follower of yours and know you have a friend in VA!!!
Kim,That little close cluster of yellow eggs are lady beetle eggs. You should keep them. They will hatch in 10 days or so. Then they will be nymphs (looking like little alligators) they eat a lot of aphids. Eventually they will turn into Lady beetles. Google the life cycle of lady beetles. It's very interesting. I watch for the eggs all the time. The nymphs eat more aphids that the actual beetle from my observation.🐞🐞🐞🐞🐞
Beginning this Springtime the pests/problems I had were: 1st: aphids 2nd: inky cap mushrooms 3rd: cabbage hoppers 4th: spider mites Hoping it isn’t too late to treat the garden! 🙏🏼☀️🌱
I had aphids on my carrot greens...they were harvested so that’s over 🙄😄 but I just planted a second crop...so this information will be helpful for future crops! I always get them on my kale 🙈😜 Melissa from Simple Living told me that they will leave when cold weather comes on. 👍 She just cuts it back & doesn’t harvest during late summer when they are the worst. Although they showed up early this year 🤷♀️ (northern California) ughhh! My rainbow chard doesn’t get them, and is beautiful! 😉 So for my Calda Verde soup, I just use the chard instead of kale in the soup. (Portuguese for green soup, sooo good, turkey smoked sausage, potatoes, & usual veggies in soup.)
I am glad I found your video. I live in the South and for the first time in all the years, I have been gardening. This year was awful, my cabbage, collard greens are getting eaten and are looking really bad.
I'm so happy you used the zucc plant as that's my problem. Will run down the neem and other oils. You mentioned male flower; what does female flower look like? My plant only produced 3 zucc so far and I lost a whole stem of the plant from wetness, I guess. We've had an abundance of rain this year. It is in a raised bed.
I've been meaning to try those oils out, but does the neem, peppermint, rosemary combo soak into the plant and affect the flavor of the veggies? What about plants grown for their leaves like kale? Do they taste different once the oils are washed off?
I just noticed my eggplant leaves are now holey! Using the mix tomorrow. Have been using it on my cantaloupe plant, as I was gone for a couple of days and someone else was watering for me, and I think I ended up with aphids-or at least I think they were but they were all black but grouped up like aphids. (What are they really?) But the spray has been working well. I’m now onto maintenance every couple of weeks! Woo hoo!
Loved the spray bottle you used for this. It beats using the other ones when so many plants are involved. Thanks for including the link. Just ordered two.
Thank u so much for this advice and information. Definitely going to be using this in my vegetable garden this year. Even for my flower garden actually minus the peppermint and the rosemary. 🙏🏽✌🏾👌🏾
a hand sprayer works wonders when spraying off the aphids. If you adjust the stream just right on a bottle, you can find the perfect spray pattern to keep the over-spray down, and your surrounding leaves dry. I really dislike introducing oils and sprays to the garden if I can avoid it. Of course this gardening tactic would be absolutely unreasonable for me if I had to grow anything on a large scale. your garden rocks, and so do your vids.
Hi i like ur garden vlog but was wonderin if could use the neem leaves in water as a pesticide to spray my veggies plants for pests as mites white flies etc .....
I spray in the evening after bees have stopped working. First I at the ground well. Then spray leaves and ground. That way, the spray is likely still damp in the early morning as bugs emerge from the soil to attack!
Thank You! Informative and good to see your sprayer is exactly like my own. My biggest problem is Ants! Here in the Philippines (Leyte Province), they're EVERYWHERE!
Hi Kim! Thank you for this video. I just prepared a solution of neem and peppermint oil as you described. I’m wondering if it’s safe to use on plants like kale and beet greens i.e. those that will be eaten? If ok to spray on those types of plants, is there a waiting period for when they can be harvested? Thanks so much!
I recently started my kitchen garden. And the pests are numerous. From mealy bugs, grasshoppers, flies, ants, brown spots on leaves (sap suckers) grubs, baby hornworms. And most recently, 4” depth by 2” wide holes in the garden beds. I have a neem tree in my yard. So I’ve made my own oil. Sprayed the plants and no success at eradicating the pests. I’ve used peppermint oil, rubbing alcohol and no success. I bought some pots yesterday and I will replant all plants in the pots. I think this should help. I’ve planted a few in pots before and didn’t have as many problems other than hornworms and some mealy bugs. Any suggestions?
I have the neem oil but I’m don’t know where to get the peppermint and rosemary oil that is safe for my container garden. And what would be the measurements for a half gallon sprayer? Any help would be appreciated 😊
Is it okay to spray neem oil with organic soap as a preventative measure for the vegetable garden and fruit trees. I don't see any bugs, but as a preventative measure want to do this.
Hi Kim. First thank you for your informations! Second i want to ask you a question: in my garden there are a lot of pickle worms to eat my cucumbers, squash,Chinese pumpkins and winter melons.do you have a solution? And can you pls teach me how to repel these pickle worm?
That's a great idea to spray the soil! I never thought of that. I just encountered the biggest caterpillar I've ever seen today. It was at least 4 inches long and chewing on my poor tomato plant leaves like it was a smorgasbord! I'm slightly embarrassed to say that my tip for getting rid of it, was to call my husband 🤦🏽♀️. In my defense, the caterpillar gave up a big fight and spit or excreted some yucky green stuff all over my husband's glove 🤢.
Update: that "caterpillar" was a tomato hornworm. I have since learned more about these critters, and have had one other encounter. I've sprayed BT and haven't seen anymore signs of them. But I do make sure to respray after a big rain.
South OC and the spider mites have been horrible. I also had a new insect, leaf hoppers. So many bugs. And then the mosquitoes bites. Thanks for the spider mite tips.
Thank you Kim! I just started gardening when one of your videos inspired me during this quarantine. Your advise from your live videos and past videos have definitely helped me with my raised beds/garden set up. I just didn’t take in consideration the pest control. 😫 But I’ve ordered my neem oil package from the Rusted Gardner a couple of days ago since you mentioned it one of your prior videos and I’m hoping that this will help me with my lettuce. Thank you again for this video!!!
Lettuce in July? Unless you live in an unusually cool area in the US, you need to watch more of Kims vids, I'm still learning just like you, I've learned that lettuce and Cilantro do not fare well in summer, not well at all (maybe Kale etc)..They "bolt" once the temps hit like 80+. I can only keep some alive because I bring them inside as the day heats up, and I'm a Mr Mom with the time to do such things, the average person can't be so hands-on throughout the day. We can learn together (-;/
Thanks for all your informative videos! You are a blessing to all of us novice gardeners! Can you please tell me where you got your sprayer in the above video? Also, what do you use to get such large leafed veggie plants! Manure?
Found some stink bugs or shield bugs on pole beans. Went ahead and sprayed neem oil. I normally wet the leaves down until they’re dripping (both sides). That’s the correct way to spray neem oil isn’t it? To douse it and soak them? It doesn’t hurt the plants?
What kind of peppermint and rosemary oil are you using? I originally thought essential oils, but 1 tsp would be a full bottle and it's not in those squeeze bottles like you have. I don't see it listed in the description of the video and haven't found them in your again list either. Thanks!!
Thanks for another great video calikim! Thanks to your one of your diy videos from last year I got creative for building my tomato cages 😁 couple bamboo stakes and twine (starting on a budget)
Something is eating my bean plant leaves but I haven't found the culprit! I spray with BT every week on my supertunias since we deal with budworms. Thanks for the tip, I'll try it!
I’ve been lucky to avoid aphids here in North Carolina as we have a lot of assassin bugs that eat the aphids. However, I lost all my corn to brown marmorated stink bug. I haven’t come across anything to get rid of them yet. I’m looking into planting a trap crop to lure them away from my vegetables, but still need to figure out what to do with them after that. All suggestions welcome.
As always informative and great tips! Appreciate the reminder about the bees. Very important. Thank you. Will be using this first thing tomorrow. Aphids, caterpillars, spider mites and white flies have taken up residence in my garden this year. Then there's the birds and the raccoon who love my peaches! I expect 10% donation to the wildlife, but the birds and raccoon have to learn math. LOL. In addition to the neem and spinosad, I use beneficial insects. LOVE Lacewings. They are aphid annihilators (as well as many other insects) and stay around the garden. Raccoons dislike cucumbers so I plant them around the perimeter where I can. Cayenne Pepper sprinkled on the peaches chases the rodents and raccoons away (burns their nose). Great video, Kim!
Hi!! First, THANK YOU! for sharing your knowledge!! I enjoy the videos. Question, if you mix the mixture and only spray a couple of leaves, then wait for 48 hours, will the mixture hold up in the sprayer for 48 hours??? If you do not use it all after the first initial spray how long does it last and if it does how do you store it??
Thanks for the tips, I live in Delhi where it’s very hot so will try using the oil in the evening. Can u share your monthly maintenance schedule for the garden?
I just noticed holes in my pepper plants. I planted companion plants around them but doesn’t seem to be working. How much water did you add to your sprayers?
Hi C.I have a terrible infestation of thrips on my eggplant.I am organic. My tomatoes are right next to the infested plants. Should I get rid of the eggplants all together,as it's spreading on the tomatoes. If not, what do I spray them with? Please for your advice?
Hi! Are you suggesting to not put the spray on the flowers/fruit? Just the leaves and soil? I am asking because Aphids are on my strawberry plant leaves and fruit/flower right now.
Hello there...I have a bunch of garden beds..haven't seen much of insects around but I would like to take precautions and be prepared just incase...I do see some very very tiny insects crawling in the soil where I planted watermelon plants..do I use the same mix to get rid of them or is there something else I need to do? Thanks.
Just love your videos! I am new to your channel and look forward to joining you live on Mondays. I am active in a large community garden in Baltimore (Gary's area, zone 7!) and have noticed that my red kuri squash have invited a swarm of cucumber beetles. Would neem oil keep them away? I'm afraid it's a matter of time that they find our rows of cucumbers....
Gallan of sea water with 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper and 2 tsb distilled vinegar. Its good for cabbage radishes and turnip and rutabaga. Spray every 2 weeks depending on if you get alot of rain spray in 1 week.
Thank you for this video. I’m always wondering exactly how to use these sprays. I bought everything from Gary, but somehow I didn’t know I could mix them all, saving much time spraying the garden.
So I just sprayed this all over my pomegranate tree after I trimmed it, it was infested with leaf foot bug....do you think it will help with thise bugs
Great video Kim 👍 Very informative. I found some super tiny green inch worms on my Romain and baby romaine lettuce while harvesting yesterday. They were starting to really do some damage. I caught them in time I believe. I'm going to buy some of those oils from Gary. What's the name of the spray container you're spraying with?
I went through 4-5 of your videos to get your milk spray formula and found that you have two recipes. You use a 1:3 and a 1:8 ratio. You don’t mention it, but I guessed one is used as preventive (the weaker, 1:8), the other for actual infestation (the stronger, 1:3)..... so that is what I will do. I started the preventive spray today and will repeat every 10 days.
If I bought the Bonide Neem Oil which doesn't have AZ in it, can I add some of the neem oil with AZ so that purchase wasn't a bust? I have aphids and white flies. Or just stop the bonide all together? Any help is appreciated! Thanka from Central Florida.
Hello Miriam, I use what I mix the same day. The neem oil itself will last, but the component that kills the chewing and sucking insects doesn't last long. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this helpful video! I’ve been using pre-made commercial organic insecticide and it seems to be working OK, but it is a bit expensive. I will be investing in these oils instead!
Any tips for how I can make a spray from either commercially purchased dried tea or liquid concentrate from stinging nettle? I’m not really able to find or make this from the plant. I have sooty mold on my gardenia bushes and crepe myrtle in Florida. Hallllp.
Hi CaliKim. Thank you so much for your videos, I'm learning quite a bit as I build up my first garden. I wanted to let you know that I purchased the hand pump garden sprayer from the Amazon link you provided. I was excited to receive it, but I was very disappointed with its performance (orange pump with tree graphic). The pump was very weak, leaked all over and I had to pump it constantly, while I sprayed. Anyway, just wanted to let you know because I would hate for any of your other viewers to have the same experience I did. I am returning this product. If you have any other hand pump recommendations, I'm open! Thanks! :)
With tears in my eyes and determination in my heart the VINE BORERS are working really hard to hurt my heart and pumpkins HELP PLEASE I'm doing what you said in this video but there NOT at the stem there in the tips and flowers I'm in my garden EVERY MORNING I've become so good at finding them everyone looks for the brown dust NOPE it starts out like crystals sugar clear and sticky I keep adjusting your recipe but it hard on the flowers they turn brown and some die my pumpkins cant even get started! Thanks in advance for any suggestions big fan
I’ve got the dreaded cabbage loopers, even on my sweet mint (but not the peppermint). I’ve only sprayed a couple times, but it really seems to be helping a lot. I get so worried about spraying the leaves though!
have you watched learn to grows video where she uses garlic barrier with vermisterra tea for pest control she also uses neem with vermisterra tea works pretty well
Oh no Sherilynne - sorry to hear it! The aphids and cabbage loopers love kale. You might also try row covers for your kale to keep the white moths from laying eggs that turn into the cabbage loopers. Good luck!
CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY hopefully it will come back soon. I trimmed off the “holey” leaves and sprayed a sample of your Neem oil mix on a few that don’t have sun shining on them right now. This is my first time growing kale and cukes so I’m excited. I did get a great batch of Kale already 😀. My tomatoe patch is doing awesome and plan to transplant a few Tiny Tim’s from you in the next few days
Hey calikim , my cantaloupe leaves are yellowing and gradually browning , there are also some spots on it . And it has spread to all the cantaloupes . Should i pull them out bcz there is also a watermelon vine next to it . I have already put some new seeds in the ground by the way . Plz help me 😱😱😱
I’m having a terrible time with slugs on most of my greens. I’ve tried, neem, peppermint oils, slugging, copper, eggshells, beer traps with no luck. I try to pick them off at dusk but I’m not getting enough of them as they’re eating a lot Thanks
You are right about the daily inspection, found some dreaded squash bug eggs on my squash and zucchini a few days ago. Removed the leaves with the eggs and sprayed Neem oil on all of the plants. So far everything looks great!!!
