My grandpa was a university professor and he always said “university is an education, not job training”, you’re not supposed to know what you want to do yet, those that do, usually burn out or are faced with disappointment. and I appreciated that as I navigate my 20s

I'm watching this the day before my 29th birthday and those first 30 seconds, that first quote REALLY hit me.
@elizabethb.3932
@elizabethb.3932 Год назад
Unless there’s something you’re really clear and passionate about (which I don’t think most people have), I think it’s way more important to determine what you want your days to look like rather than what you want to do or be. Do you like a 9-5 where you can leave the office at the office or do you need flexibility, will it drive you mad to sit in front of a computer all day, do you want to work closely with others or work independently, etc. In my experience it’s less the topic and more the day to day that makes a good or bad job (and the coworkers). I’m 38 and still don’t know what I want to be- but I’ve found it’s what you do with your every day that makes a job for me or not.

This is very true and I wish this concept was discussed when I was in high school - I’m almost 28 now (we just had our 10 year reunion from high school) and I went into studying teaching after school and then of course working as a teacher and already I feel myself burning out… I’m having what I call my grown up gap year next year where I work casually and start to finally write a book 📖 because I am sick of the school system and the lack of work life balance when you work full time. You’ve hit the nail on the head about organising your life by what you want your days (which is what life is made of!) to be like 😊

I graduated with 30+, imagine my crisis! I know many of you don't feel like it but you have time, time to learn, grow, try things out. Also: everything, absolutely every single thing of the oftentimes seemingly unconnected things I did throughout the years served me so, so well at some point AND made total sense! Looking back the weirdest encounters and interests are somewhat connected to what I do now. Now go and weave your own stories, one step at a time.

I was closer to 40 than 30 when I graduated, and I had made more than a few attempts at an undergraduate degree before I got mine in 2010. In essence I had a 12ish year gap year, which is a bit too long. I would say that I did learn many things along the way that allows me to adapt to my life now. Making the right choices became important to me as a necessity somewhere probably much later than it should have. However, now that I can see the effects of that, I know taking the time to choose correctly is well worth the wait. I definitely would not wait 12 years to think longer about my choices again.
@garrulus3399
@garrulus3399 Год назад
@@liamwhalen Hi Liam, well, that's understandable. A gap decade so to speak! Ultimately it's all just about living life (sometimes somehow), but I wish I hadn't been so anxious about the future all the time. I still am, but for better reasons hahaha...

I also didn't know what I wanted to do for a living and I got a job related to what I studied because it was available and 15 years later I'm still doing it. Is it my passion? No, but I learned it didn't need to be. I struggled deciding what to do and study because I have so many interests. But job doesn't have to be any of that. What makes it fulfilling is that I take pride in doing a good job and working with my team to deliver a quality product. Turns out, it's all you need. 💜

Hey Leonie, I just wanted to let you know that I really really enjoy the videos you have been putting up recently. I feel like now that you have graduated it seems you have more time to put more creative ideas into the making of your videos which is really cool :) Don't be stressed about what job you will work on later just enjoy the time in the present for now. Hopefully you'll get to read lots of good books!

Hey Leonie! I think it's quite rare when people know what to do straight after graduation. The thing that helped me was starting to work full time during my final year and learning what I like and what I'm good at (and what brings enough money, tbh)) Wasn't like I've understood it straight away, but eventually got it) Also, in case it helps - a lot of people that I know agree that 20-23 are one of the least pleasant years emotionally, a lot of stress, a lot of feelings of "Hey, I'm adult now, I need to know what to do". The good thing is it gets better. Sounds cliche but it really does.

The older I get (and I'm 28 so not that old), the more I realize that very few people know what they want to do with their lives. Each job I've had since university has been helpful in helping me find the elements of a job that I enjoy and those I don't. You may feel a bit directionless, but learning through experience what you don't like in a job is so valuable for learning what you are looking for 😊

I think that: More do you work in your area (and another thinks in the middle), then more you understand what do you want to do and what you don't want. Two years (now) after my graduation, I feel more connected with my life, career and my choices! Love your video ♥

I think the couch looks great! At least on camera, the green of the plaids is strenghtened by the plants around it. And the texture makes the whole couch look a bit more "grown up" than the fleece blankets. And very true, watching someone else tackle some things in their life makes me feel like maybe I can do that too! Anyway, another lovely video :)

I relate to this so much. I'm planning to graduate next spring and then the education I've been working on for years is done (I'm 27 and started at 19). I did study to become a teacher and did a year long internship at school but then I realized that that kind of working environment isn't for me as an over stressing introvert, I'd burn out so fast. To be honest, I'd love to get a new education and do coding or maybe become a librarian. Who knows. I'm pretty lost and it felt comforting to listen to you talking about your own feelings of not knowing what you want to do next. Thank you for the video

Thank you for this video, it felt very comforting to watch! I graduated from university with my master's degree at the end of July and I've been job searching ever since. I've felt very anxious and uncertain about my future, and focusing on things like giving my days structure, making little changes to my living space and taking the time to do things I enjoy has helped.

I graduated with a Psychology degree about 17 years ago. I'm 46, and I now have a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in film. lol I'm still working on growing my "film career" but it's not at all a must to stay with your degree. There is so much you can do with it that you may not think is related to your degree. Just remember life is so long and we change as people over time. It's perfectly okay not to know what to do or go completely in a different direction in life, and you can always change your course if you want to. I know you will succeed in whatever you choose to do. :)

I've volunteered for a NGO a few years ago for an entire month, it was kinda of a coincidence and just maybe the universe throwing something that I really needed at the time. My dad had recently passed away and he worked with the NOG Terre des Hommes in Brazil and they had some partnership with another organizations who at the time needed some translator to spent a month doing trips on the Amazon river with US health students. So I went and it was amazing! And now I've a full time job and never worked with a NOG again, watching you made me want to search for something that I can do at least on the weekends bc that's when I'm free. So thank you for that and thank you for always recommending great books. ❤️

Thank you so much for this video Leonie. I didn’t know how much I needed this. I’m still in university, I have so much work to do and I’m also moving out with my boyfriend - I feel exhausted all the time. But I realised the blame is on all of my unhealthy habits that keep me up at night. With your video, I feel like I breathed for the first time in months and made myself a little list of priorities, and even things to do when I’m having a panic attack. I love your videos because you aren’t preaching a « new way to live » or « 20 magic advice to feel better ». You just experiment and share the process with us. It feels so wholesome ! Watching your videos has always been like a warm blanket on a cold day. Sometimes when you feel lost, take a minute to realise you’re right there. And that’s already enough. ❤️

Thing about careers is that to get to the desired end point there must be stepping stones to get onto. The only way to do that is to get that first job. It may not be ideally the best choice but sometimes the least ideal job may end up being the most rewarding. By reward, one doesn't mean economic prosperity but instead rewarding in terms of experience, training and value to your future career.

More than a decade after I got my Master's, I still have no idea what I'm doing/want to do with the rest of my life. My professional adventures in my 30s came mostly by happenstance, sooo... now it's just "what now/next?" As someone who graduated a few years ago (just realised it was 6 years ago now, eek!) I also didn't know what I wanted to do. I remember feeling this strange juxtaposition where it felt like there were loads of opportunities or nothing for me at all. Eventually I decided to go into the publishing industry, originally with the idea of being an editor. But, as I worked in that industry I learnt new things and skills and discovered a different path, still technically in publishing but nowhere near what I had first envisioned. So basically, from what I have learnt (and Wilde's quote really symbolises this), is that the best thing for anyone who is unsure is to be flexible and be willing to try new things. But the most important thing is that a career is not and should never be the most significant thing about you, there is life outside of the workspace too.

As for Jane Eyre, that Thornfield Hall sounds like a really swinging hotspot but who knows what goes on beyond those old wooden walls? Then there's Max Medina, who has his hands full and is in over his head with those inscrutable Gilmore Girls. As for me, I've been listening to some Robert Sapolsky lectures, which I recommend. If you ever travel back in time to the 1980s, please look me up and we'll share a cup of coffee. Very good to see you. Take care.

My brain is also conditioned to sleep after reading so I am often in trouble during the day if I lie down and read xD

Hi Leonie! I once knew 'what I would do with my life' I did it, things changed and I didn't know again. It's the way things go in life, I guess. I saw a meme on IG, something like "Family member: What are you doing with your life? Me: It's a surprise... " 😀 I'm about to use that line next time someone asks. :-)

I'm 27 and graduated about 5 years ago. But I don't really know what I'm doing with my life and also have no clue what I want to do. I even had hard time in university, because I wanted to study genetic engineering but instead, end up with electrical engeering. I was afraid about getting a job after graduation, so I did go to master's class but eventually dropped out. After that got a good job in electrical engineer field, but quit and moved to another company which is also disappointing. So, yes, I don't really know what I want to do. Sometimes I think that may be this is because I choose wrong major, may be I should follow my heart and took the genetic engineering. I don't know. I wish to have some break in my life. Just one year to think about what I want to do.

Also, out of curiosity, how long to you get to stay in student accommodations? Here in the US, they have students move out pretty fast! Like, immediately. lol
