Watching apple users discover the joys of an app library is so wholesome! Like yes! Get rid of the clutter!

I’m actually pretty surprised that no one mentioned to you using focus filters that was a game changer for me. I have a personal filter for all the social media and fun things that I like to do when I’m not at work and then I have a work filter that has any app that is related to my work. I have it set up to change automatically to my work filter when I get to work. That way it takes all the distractions of any social media apps off of my home screen and I have notifications turned off for those types of apps so I don’t get tempted. I have a workout filter with work out related apps, driving filter to remove all distractions and even a bedtime filter for the same reason.

The App Library is a game changer! I literally keep what I use on my Home Screen, and the rest goes there. No more folders since the App Library takes care of that. Feels nice, love the organization.

Hi Hannah, I loved this! I actually have different Home Screen layouts linked to different focus modes. So I have a deep work focus mode that when I switch on only shows me my “focus” apps. It’s helpful for compartmentalising! My regular layout is made up of three pages, the first being the apps I want to use every day/ utilities, the second page is my “goals” page with my Pinterest mood board widget, my quarterly goals, and apps that relate to me working on my goals, and the last page has things like storygraph, letterboxd and various newspapers. i keep any social media apps in my app library 😊

Ooh, that sounds so handy! I didn't know about this feature, and after some cursory research I wish generic Android allowed you to make multiple focus modes and select which apps to show you in each of them (like iPhones and Samsungs), but maybe I can make the basic "turn all the other apps grayscale" thing work if I organize the home screen right... 🤔

Ah, I just did a refresh on my home screens yesterday! It was very satisfying, although not as thorough as this one - I think that’ll wait until I leave my current job at the end of June and start my next chapter. You’re so right that our needs for our phones change depending on where our life is at! Hadn’t really thought about it like that before.

hannah, you having all your apps sorted into folders except for the audible and spotify apps is breaking my brain 😂 i have my screen set up to be as few taps or swipes as possible. so no multiple pages, no folders, just the most essential apps on the homescreen, that's it. i do have them all colour coordinated and even went to the effort to make them custom icons so all the colours are ✨ identical ✨ and i've made twitter look like twitter again instead of x!

I'm curious if you have/would consider getting a separate work phone that is focused on content creation and your work separate from your personal phone. I totally understand not wanting that, because I have a work phone provided by my employer and it can be a hassle managing two phones sometimes, but there's also definitely utility in being able to put away work communications and not having those accessible at all times. I know Sierra Schultzzie got a separate content phone and found a benefit in that, so just curious if that's an option you've considered!

My phone is super simple. I have three screens. First screen is completely blank except a weather widget so my phone feels clean to me. 2nd screen is my personal fun things (audiobook widget bc it's my #1 most important app, a few social media apps, games) and then the 3rd screen is admin/work stuff (bank app, basic google apps, a couple things I use for my job) and that's it! I do not use any folders and I delete any app that I don't use.

i only keep 4 apps on my home page: maps, music, messages, and canvas (for school) with 6 widgets: one has maps, weather, and the app i order coffee from stacked, the second has my screen time and bank account, third is calendar, 4th battery levels, 5th is find my friends and devices, and the last one has my grades and school assignments. i use the control center to access camera. everything else is in the app library and it seems to do a good job of understanding which apps need to be most prominent and i rarely need to search or click through folders and have nothing on the swipe left page.

I have a few factors when I organize my apps, of importance and aesthetics. Like I have my daily apps and things I don't want to hunt for on the first page with a couple of widgets (an event countdown app and Todoist), the second page is a lot of my fun/games/book apps along with some folders (for Amazon, Google, and work-related apps), and then the third page is kind of a dumping ground for temporary/utility apps or until I find a permanent spot (and I needed this reminder to refresh it). But within each page, the organization is a balance of color and where my thumb reaches. And if I have a folder, I only have one page in it.

I only really reorganise my phone when I get a new phone, and often there's only small changes - really I think most of my stuff has been the same or very similar for years now. All these folders! I don't use any folders on my home screens - only in the all apps bit (I don't have an iPhone which may change the system).

i personally really dislike the app library bc my muscle memory is too good at automatically clicking onto apps like tiktok when i didn’t mean to go on there so i have but like 10+ pages of just the clock widget between my homepage and the app library. i have a really minimal setup and i just search with the swipe down search bar for any apps i want to use that aren’t one of the few select ones that i have on my homscreen

The only thing I have on my home screen are two shortcuts that link to the bus stops near my work and home so I can see when to leave. Everything else is in the App Library. I use social media so much less now and I love it. The bottom bar has texts, calls, the Transit app, and email. But they are all customized shortcuts so they look cohesive.

My apps are a mess but mostly because I'm a hoarder. So many apps that I've downloaded to "better myself", to learn new stuff, to meditate etc. and they just never get used. But deleting them would be like giving up on those goals. So there they stay, quietly shaming me, as I pretend that I'll use them, it's just not the right time yet. I know I could always re-download them if I ever feel like it, but honestly, I don't remember the names of most of these 😂

It is so interesting how differently people organize their phones and really reflects and how their brains works. For me the game changer was when during quarantine time i decided to go for aesthetic and did new icons for my apps in muted colors, i never went back. I didn’t realize how overstimulating all of the different colors of the standard icons was for me

I changed most of my app icons to the google turtle emojis haha - I used a bunch from daily turtle emoji on tumblr who creates their own mashups of emojis with the turtle. Then I made a couple of my own! My favourite is the podcast one which is a turtle with headphones. 🐢🐢🐢 Plus I have some random ones like my shopping app is a bag of frozen peas, my calendar is a bread tag, my bank app is an abacus, and I have some little abstract drawings that I did for maps and weather and things.

My home screen is just one page. Half is the weather widget and then 3 lines of folders / apps. 1st line are folders: Audiobook/Podcasts Apps, Music, Sports, (Mental) Health, organization; third line is Messenger folder (yes I have 8 😂 including discord) and then the icons for calling, Ecosia, Fotos and Camera. Middle line is icons for newspaper app, todoist, public transport app and notes app. All other app just live in the general page I can pull up (Andoid phone).

I just got a new habit around finding them easily through the app library 😅.... I ended up downloading an app called I Choose To that lets you put a little wait time upon opening the app, with a customisable message. Mine says "what do you want to be doing?" And I have to wait 20 seconds if I genuinely want to proceed to the app (you can even change the length of wait time to be different for different apps if you want to get fancy with it)

I have one page and the app library, the page is five widgets, the bar at the bottom is four folders, and then everything else is in the app library. If i don't care enough about an app to add it to one of the four folders, then I will probably uninstall it the second notifications start bothering me. (Edit to add:) I also keep only 8 apps on one page in a folder, I like having the last space in the folder empty, and the only folder that is two pages is Games. [Second Edit:] My five widgets are a medium Batteries widget, small Books, small Duolingo, small Podcasts, and small Screen Time.

no idea whether iOS supports this but a possible suggestion for separating work social media from scrolling social media - either putting the same app in two different folders (so, two shortcuts to the same thing, but in different places) or, get ready - double installs of the same app? i think this feature is mostly meant for using multiple accounts in apps that don't allow easy switching between them natively, but it could be a good way to separate "work time" social media and "play time" social media, where you could potentially have different settings for them (potentially different icons as well if iOS allows icon customization), and maybe even different screen time entries? So as long as you're disciplined about which one you open, you could see "ah yes I spent three hours this week on work Instagram and five hours just scrolling". again, no idea if any of this is feasible, just throwing it out there as an idea (also i really need to organize my own home screens, they are a Mess)

Maybe that's telling about the life they are reflecting 😅😂 It might be time for a digital spring cleaning anyway; I'm already cleaning out my email inbox and working on getting my browser tabs down (a Sysiphos task, but at least it's only one browser now), so throwing out some unused apps and creating more clarity (maybe even with a new background photo) sounds nice.

I see your YNAB app. Still waiting for your video on how you use YNAB ;) I love it so much and I learned about it from you! How do we get YNAB to sponsor you? Also - do you know you can change the YNAB icon? I made mine rainbow and it's lovely. This video made me aware of the widgets screen and the app library screen on my iPhone. I'd seen them, but always swiped away from them immediately as I only ever ended up on them by mistake. So... now I have almost no apps on my home-screen. I'm someone who swipes down and types the first few letters of an app almost any time I want to access one I don't use often. So it turns out I don't need them cluttering up my brain!
