This is unironically an important film archive and the fact that its in the care of a bunch of depressed alcoholic Wisconsinites is absolutely hilarious
A solar flare wouldn't affect DVDs and BluRays. You're right in thinking it would affect computer files, but I always heard electronics that are turned off at the time don't get affected.
I've never been able to figure out the layout of RLM's studio. To me it seems like an endless labyrinth of rooms filled with shelves, shelves filled with every oddity put to film...I imagine if someone were to stumble upon this place they would find themselves hopelessly lost, desperate to find the way they came in. Every time they encounter a door they pray it's an exit, only to find another room of shelves stocked exclusively with Nukie. Eventually they would begin to succumb from starvation or exposure, and the last thing they hear before entering the void is Mike Stoklasa's sinister cackle.
This is where David Lynch filmed the waiting red room from Twin peaks. RLM is from the weird dimension. How else would you explain the alien rich laughter that brings you joy and makes you tremble at the same time.
They have already done one, it's pretty great. Called "How Not To Make A Movie", I don't know if it is still available tho. I bought it years and years ago.
Basically sums up the computing experience: Starts by saying how cool and useful it is. Tries to use it, but a 'sync' of some kind is required. A Windows update notification then pops up with an annoying noise. A preinstalled antivirus crapware program asks him to read their blog.
It feels like your ordinary youtuber video, it doesn’t sit right with me. I’ve been used to spying on them living their lifes and talking about crap they like while they try to break the fourth wall every now and then
Bearded carpenter with a heavenly voice altruistically regularly puts himself through pain and suffering for his fellow man...Rich Evans is literally Jesus Christ
I like how it just seems like Rich does everything; 99% of the building and carpentry, organizing the tapes, picking up the new tapes from the mail and then screening all of them and trying to spare his coworkers from the worst of Black Spine.
He does all the physical stuff Jay does most of the editing Mike uh looks for Robocop Blue rays writes the scripts, or maybe he just stocks the booze fridge
@@boardgamebrawl Not sure on Half in the bag but Jay has edited every episode of BOTW up til at least the black Spine Christmas episode I just checked.
RedLetterMedia is a pioneer of RU-vid culture and the fact that they are still putting out quality content, and interesting and entertaining BTS content is just astounding. The movies they watch and the commentary they provide should make them as iconic as MST3K in the mainstream, but sadly they'll just have to remain the superior cheesy movie review source in our hearts. Thanks RLM, thanks Mike, Jay, and Rich Evans.
I kind of like things better this way. Unlike MST3K there's no network to sell them off or start imposing stupid rules on them, like demanding plot arcs and storylines, changing their schedule around. There's no cancellations, no selling out, no pressure to go mainstream and alienate the current audience while chasing one that was never going to care, no chaining oneself to the almighty algorithms, just a bunch of friends hanging out together and making fun of bad movies.
@@commonflax4947 MST3K is actually doing a Kickstarter and putting out their own season on their own network. It ends in 9 hours and they are fully funded.
I love how Jay just couldn't resist making his dialogue look like a cinematic horror, huge depth of field, lighting gel, a horrible monster wandering around muttering about tapes.
So glad someone else noticed Jay shooting the next Dario Argento film at the Victorville Film Archive. Gregg can talk about how they also filmed Space Cop, the #1 film of Uganda there.
When the first BotW was uploaded, little did these fellas know that they had just inadvertently taken the first step towards essentially establishing the world's first and only private library specializing in VHS junk. How inspiring!
@@georgebaynard4096 Starring Margot Robie, Allison Janney and Sebastian Stan...meaning all star cast....and Allison Janney won best suppoting oscar (not that it means anything)...
This treasure vault of arts and culture better be located in a bunker. The year 5000 A. D. : 'A time capsule of a bygone civilization has just been unearthed. A unique collection of (what we must assume) were only the most sophisticated and artistically valuable works of this long forgotten race. Our scientists are particularly baffled by a number of unlabeled, black box-shaped objects. The working hypothesis is, that these objects contain hidden messages and our best researchers are working overtime to decipher their meaning. '
And the scientists will learn to push the whopper button, about manners at the table, and how to pet a cat from those black spines. Among other things.
And here we have Troll 3, an installation donated by RedLetterMedia to the State of Wisconsin in 2043. *Chinese tourists proceed to make pictures with their automatic flash on, bewildered and amazed that Wisconsin has a community sized pool filled with an actively fuming tar pit* Whilst the guide explains the pioneering work of RLM, a giant air bubble pops out in the form of a fat old man. He screams, *IT BROKE NEW GROUND!*
@@frankmerker630 Huh.. That's something I should probably worry about more than I should.. I smash shit a lot, me and my friends used to go down to parks and smash the sh*t out of TV's, Glass bottles, microwaves.. Pretty much anything we could find. And we never even considered eye protection.
What do you mean I didn't see any tapes there? Was it in the sci-f fantasy area? I do love that empty shelf behind Rich at the end great real-estate for future films.
So the Nukie vhs on the shelf are invisible, but on the plinketto board they re-appear and transmutate in a Neil Breen film when selected. This is advanced Physics course ladies & gentlemen
Don't forget that Neil Breen is the ultimate hacker and the world's greatest at everything, so he just hacked the Nukie tapes to become one of his films.
I remember sending them Sumo Vixens a WHIIILE ago, which is a soft core/action-comedy movie that's awful, and I thought it may be funny for them to watch on BOTW. Rich said on PreRec they watched it and other bad movies on his birthday, and apparently that one in particular ruined the mood. (He mentioned it in reference as to why they don't watch softcore stuff on BOTW). Sorry for ruining your birthday, Rich Evans.
Wait till he finds out you can buy customized sex dolls that can watch star trek with you..... Can't wait till Mike pranks him when he erase her speech lines and saves his into the Doll
Rather software than simply "technology". Lots of pretenders now acting like they would be total pros with any custom softwares, or even organization...
The fact that Rich Evans has had to sit through every tape that's made an appearance on BOTW sounds like a soul-crushing living nightmare existence. But how else would you describe being Rich Evans?
Just want to throw out some appreciation for the work everyone on the RLM team does. Rich puts in so much organizing and constructive work, Jay and Mike trade in editing videos. Everyone trades off production roles. Thank you guys for the work you do. ^^
When the inevitable time of burning the building down will come - please do it by letting Rich make french fries downstairs! Let it all come full circle!
@@TysonHook-22- Actually he cut off his thumb in one of the old Halloween Best of the Worsts while he was cutting a tape in half. I'm guessing he made a pact to the Showbiz Pizza Bear to get it back, and that is why it has been haunting him.
HOLY SHIT IS THAT CANE TOADS: AN UNNATURAL HISTORY??? My bio mentor in college showed us that documentary and I non-ironically love it. You guys gotta watch it!
When yall retire you should make this collection a tourist attraction, I'd pay to just walk through and see all these different movies. It's one thing for a website to have infinite movies, but to physically see a tangible collection of this size is very impressive
@@chuckthunder781 "I did it all for the Nukie (Come on) The Nukie (Come on) So you can take that cookie And stick it up your (yeah) Stick it up your (yeah) Stick it up your (yeah) Stick it up your I did it all for the Nukie."
This reminds me of The Library of Babel, a short story by Borges, about a infinite library cointaining all possible books (in a specific format). The people in this world travel endlessly looking for meaning in these books filled of random letters in random order, leaving them in a state of constant despair and hopelessness. Actually... nevermind, I see no similarities
That actually exists online. The library of Babel was featured in a Vsauce video, it contains like 10 to the power of 5000 pages of 3000 letters+period+comma+space combinations.
I love these behind the scenes looks. Also, why has Nukie been this running gag for so long? Is it ever gonna be screened? Or is it just a meme at this point that will never be addressed lol.
They twitted about receiving one copy and said "Fuck you" either because it had some fame of being super bad or they already watch it so... you know the internet. People just kept sending copies. Doubt they'll ever watch it
I think they just received tons of Nukie tapes right as they started BOTW, meaning people _really_ want them to screen it, so of course, being the trolls they are, they decided it would be hilarious if they kept teasing it but never actually doing it. They also probably don't wanna do it because it's one of those famously bad movies that have already been done to death by other channels.
Well, I didn't think they'd ever show Blood Shack (The Chooper), but they did. I know Jay screened it on a livestream a handful of years ago. Speaking of which, I wish they would do more of that again.
I just love the energy that radiates from you guys in videos like this. I don't know what kind of energy that is, but I like it. Like in your Ben and Arthur episode where you guys are talking about budget independent film making tips, and here as you guys explain your movie organization system.
I formally apologize for sending you Monsters of Rock and Roar. I kind of sent it just for that opening song so I’m really happy it ended up on black spine. And the song closed your 100th episode! So that was cool. I also apologize for Explore the Naturist Lifestyle. That was my fault. You had to look at uncomfortable naked people with Macaulay Culkin because of my actions. I am sorry. And, you’re welcome, Rich. 😉 I don’t apologize for Rent-a-Friend. That is legitimately weird and should go back on the wheel! Congrats on 100 BotW, love you all, look forward to the future of RLM!
The dedication these guys have to their channel is truly inspiring, it's easy to look at it and go "ha they watch neil breen movies" but knowing the work and effort they put into their channel is so awesome. Been subcribed since 2010, when will I unsubscribe? Never
It always used to drive me crazy when video shops sorted stuff by genre. I remember looking for Trainspotting once and had to ask at the desk and it had been filed in the comedy section. Just file everything alphabetically - so much easier.
I just love you guys, few years ago I was very depressed and found you by happenstance, you guys literally saved my life. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
Jay doing a talk to camera is the most intimate and scary experience I've ever had. If Rich does a talk to camera with that shot setup, I think my mind will implode.
It should be a memorial: "Here lay the souls of Jay, Rich, Josh and Jack." Even if they are still alive, that is where their souls died. And Mike killed them!
@@squishy77wah78 - Go there right now, offer them $20, and they'd let yuo in. Offer $40 and they would probably make a Black spine episode (not Junka) with you. (That would teach you!)
The thought of rich pre screening a billion black spine tapes makes wish they would just film that. His disgust, frustrations, and annoyance would be entertaining by itself as he repeatedly swaps and trashes tapes
@@jeremyross9698 The "can we just take a moment to XYZ" comments are everywhere at the moment and they bore me. Besides, RLM aren't a charity organisation, they have a lot of fun and get revenue from what they do.
Cane Toads: An Unnatural History is actually a very good documentary. Interesting topic, good production for the era. Whoever put it in the "worst" section clearly hasn't watched any of it.
@@stephencarroll4681 that's where I saw it too! Expected a boring doc to sleep through, turned out to be a highlight of the class. That was 15 years ago for me and I still clearly remember the long shot of the van swerving down the road.
The one good thing about Star Trek Picard is that it's what led me to find this channel. One year later and this is now my favorite thing on RU-vid and I still have more videos to catch up on. Thanks RLM, you've helped me through more shit this past year than you'll ever know.
