ORICO Thunderbolt 3 M.2 Dual-bay Docking Station - A unique approach to TB3 Dock. This dock has not just 1 but 2 M.2 Slots for SSDs which is unique and promising but it is not entirely what you think and this review will cover this specific feature along with many of the dock features as well. Overall this is a great dock that is powered - meaning it has it own power supply and does not take power away from the computer. It can also supply power to the laptop as well thought limitedly compared to the OEM power adapters especially if you have a larger laptop. And this has some advantages compared to passive docks. The dock itself does not get that hot all if you don't use and NVMe, but if if you do there's a fan inside to dissipate heat. And 2 more things, 1st one might think that now a day there's TB4, how come this is still TB3, if you look at the bandwidths specs between TB3 and 4 it is the same, just stricter standard on the TB4. 2nd I am using Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVMe in this test, which I am aware is not the fasters NVMe for there use but none the less these are exhausting parts that I have in the studio, so this is what I used to test. Find out more about this dock in the video!
For those considering this dock there's a $30 off coupon on Amazon until June 30th.

I’ve used this way to upgrade my M1 MacBook Pro for almost a year with my 2 TB WD SN750 SSD. It’s a lot cheaper than upgrading SSD on Apple site, and there’s no performance difference between this one and internal SSD. Much love from Thailand krub P’Art!

That would be great but competing bandwidth would be a real issue to consider as well, if everything is used at the same time. To which there would be less ports on the dock. but hey I am in for 10 Gbe.

Nice review. finding pros & cons of different products is good, makes people aware of great & poor products. I’ll stick to the Sabrent DS-SKRT-D4TB for my OS & Cache library for now. Not as good as OWC Thunder blade however it’s still 100% Better 👍

Thanks for mentioning the NGFF issue. I was searching for confirmation about this specifically, so your video timing is perfect! That's an extremely weird decision on their side, and otherwise it would've been an instant buy for me. I wonder what other dual NVMe hubs/enclosures are there, beside Treeblet's one, and with M1 Macs support? Any guides?…

No much, search didn't show much results and the read and write speed would get capped at TB3/4 speed with over head.

I did not know that USB-A had support for 10Gbps.. thougt that standard peaked at 5Gbps, but it does support 10Gbps. as its limit does not make much sense to put a dedicated NGFF (Sata) socket in a TB3 dock. most M.2 interfaces nowadays atleast for 10Gbps (not 40Gbps drive interface) are dual M.2 compatible, so both NGFF and NVMe. Though I dont have any 40Gbps M.2 docks, only 20Gbps..Blueendless M6N.. the price for 40Gbps were simply to big a jump pricewise vs 20Gbps and the speed doesnt change a lot in M.2 drivepractise. Is it me that missed this, or did you not even state the price..?
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight Год назад
It depends, we have come a long way with too many confusing standard. It can go up to 20 Gb/s now on some new standard. USS Kobayashi Maru, there are no win all scenario, choose what is going to work for what you need, don't worry about the speed. there are ways to get more, but it does not necessary means that you or the app will utilized it!

i have YottaMaster brand version of this identical TB3 box. it is awesome and reliable and also its intel TB chipset controller ( for me intel chipset controller is extremely important). i only have one complain about this almost perfect product is not the fan noise but how much dust it can suck in through all the port openings (in 6month time leaving it on 24/7) and causes TB port to eventually glitch simply by touching the TB connector or moving the box a tiny bit. also lacks SPDIF and 2.5gb ethernet (not a show stopper).

Hello, I purchased the Orico TB3-S2 from Amazon Italy. In your video, it shows that it can accommodate two M.2 NVMe 2280 SSDs. However, I discovered that this model supports one M.2 2280 SSD and one M.2 2242 SSD. I bought it thinking I could insert two identical M.2 SSDs. Your specifications indicate that it supports up to 8TB of storage, but 2242 SSDs have a maximum capacity of 2TB, so it is not possible to reach 8TB. Is there a model available that allows for two NVMe M.2 2280 SSDs, just like in your video? I have searched for it but couldn't find it. Thank you, Nicolo' from
@ArtIsRight

I know this model is getting older now, not sure what the current one is. I would do an amazon search for other brands. Or if you like to use Orico I would contact them directly and see what products they have that fits your criteria.

I found in product description it says for NVME protocol, the maximum ssd support is 8T , and for M.2 B-KEY SATA protocol is 4T SSD.Does that mean I can get maximum 12 tb storage in total? Or I have to buy 4/4 nvme or 2/2tb sata ssd?
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 5 месяцев назад
1x 8tb and 1x 4tb for the respective protocol, there's only 2 slots. Yes you can get 12 TB total, I would not recommend combining them as RAID

Again, really interesting. One question: my fastest external drive is a Samsung 2 Terabyte T5 SSD & I get about 500 Mbps write/read with a speed test on my 2018 MacBook Pro with its Thunderbolt 3 ports. With your setup in this video, would I also get the speeds you're seeing (1400 / 2800 write/read), or are you getting those speeds because of the faster Thunderbolt 4 ports on your Mac Studio? If I could expect those speeds, why is this so much faster than my T5? Maybe the power supply has something to do with it? Also, how is your SSD formatted? I'd probably go with FAT because I'd want to run BootCamp & have it be compatible with Windows. Do you think that would make the write/read speeds slower?
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 2 года назад
No Samsung T5 uses mSATA drives that can run up to 6 Gb/s but most of the time would not reach that that. So the speed that you are seeing would be the speed that you would get with the dock as well. You are maxing out the drive. I'm getting the higher speed because of TB3 and fast NVMe, nothing to do with fast ports on the Mac studio, you would get this speed with any TB3 or newer ports. Unless you need to use both OS I would not do FAT, too much limitation. I would consider EXFAT but then overall macOS works best with APFS or HSF+.

Hi Art, when you use the double bay, what would the transfer speed on a say 30 Gbps MVNE drive be? Won’t they be half the speed? I don’t really see the point of having a double MVNE disks. Just wondering. This question relates to another video, which I think was a USB 4 enclosure, most likely Orico. I couldn’t readily locate the video, so…
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 2 года назад
The point would be to double the capacity but but before you run into any NVMe and NGFF bust limitation, you are going to hit the overhead limitation on TB3 first. So the speed that you see now is about the speed that will get. This would depends on you configure it as well. The fact that both of these ports uses different connection type is a miss in a way. This is the other video that you are referring to ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4IHVeU8_1Jk.html

Probably mis understood what I said in the video, let me clarify. You can still access data on your NVMe if you physically take it out of the dock. I was referring to a situation where someone is physically away from the dock, on a trip, etc. you won't have access to the data unless you take the dock with you.
@WillCarterOldAccount

Ah! I see. I was worried that the dock had some sort of encryption so that you couldn’t use the nvme drive with any other m.2 to usb adaptor

There are few brands and models from china but not sure if there are reliable for long term use. I dont need sd card reader and built in ssd slot. There are some other docks that may have those. SD is easier to find. CF is still currently being used but for the most part is now a deprecated, no new innovation on that front. All focus is now on CFExpress and possibly CFast. However, finding a dock with any of these com bo would really difficult for said reasons. Not that you can't find one but lots of search required.
