That’s the issue with south east asians. Most SEA countries aren’t homogeneous or populated by one ethnic group. Most countries are made up of various ethnic groups and is more of a nationality. For example , Lao people came from South China but the Rebel Lao King was kicked out by his family and raised at Angkor (Khmer empire). He would take 3000 Khmer Warriors and his Khmer Princess wife and take over Laos from the invading Syam. So as you can see from history , Laos is a mixed of many ethnicities, so are a lot of countries in SEA. So to answer your question, it’s very hard to tell a dark skin Lao from a Dark Skin Khmer since they are the same people. If I can spell his last name with less than 5 letters, he’s Khmer. But if it takes the whole alphabet, he’s Laotian 😆
