The irony is that Orwell was pretty bigoted himself and had antisemitic & Orientalist views that he espoused. He was a contradictory character that challenged the state and war, while also voluntarily enlisting in the Imperial Police Force in Burma.

This was an excellent explanation. This has felt very similar to my experience during the BLM movement and facing the racism that is so culturally built into American life experience.
It's not just in Western politics, there are movies, shows, even the desertscapes and soundscapes that are often used to depict the Middle East (which includes North Africa & West Asia, but Orientalism also weirdly lumps in Southeast Asia and other Asiatic countries), that is made up of a myriad of countries, cultures, languages, dialects, different clothing, instruments, etc. yet who are all collectively fused into a set of stereotypes, visuals, colors, sounds, clothing, even tropes about our armor/weapons, that dilute the true diversity of that region. We're often exoticized, fetishized, or we're given a nomadic tribalistic character that is reflective of barbarism or a regressive society, completely erasing all the scientific & literary contributions we've brought to the world, that have continued into the 21st century. You only ever see us through a single template viewed through a Western lens. I just finished a video an hour ago that compared Orientalist music to ACTUAL Middle Eastern music, even I as an A'rab was blown away by how watered down it is. I thought there was some authenticity, but no it's barely that. There's alot of dec olonization of the mind that I realized even I may have to do for myself after living in the West for so long. Yeah, we are THAT conditioned.
I am of Arab descent and live in Europe. The hardest part is the indifference of people that think of themselves as progressive. Most of them don't care. They think that the Middle East is complicated and always at war and in conflict, so what should they do? It's just the way that the world is 'over there'. And trying to talk about it just makes everyone change the subject in light speed. I feel deeply disconnected from the Westerners around me and to be perfectly honest: I have lost a lot of respect for them. Including people I care about.

I’ve been wondering what it means since I became aware of Tehran University Professor Mohammad Marandi. One of his fields is Orientalism but I never knew what that meant other than it was related to colonialism. He speaks perfect English & seems a reliable source for the Iranian perspective. I’ve seen him on numerous podcasts - Piers Morgan, BBC, The Duran, The Gaggle, Al Jazeera etc.
And I can see that if you enclose Orientalism into a formula with manifest destiny and Gods-chosen-people type thinking, humanity has a problem. Thanks.
