Bringing together everything we have learnt so far through Blender 3.0 / 2.9+ fundamentals. The key point that we are covering here is the concept of an origin point and how it dictates mesh. We also play around with joining and separating meshes along with the beginning of some precision movement.

Fuck, these tutorials are a life saver. Precision modelling is so underrated in the blender community. These are the kind of tools and tutorials that architects or engineers need! thanks!

@4:29 You can also transform origin without involvement of a 3D cursor. Just press CTRL+".", it will toggle transform origin option. Now you can press "g" and snap origin for example to a vertex. Pressing Ctrl+"." again will turn off origin transformation.

I can verify to what you are preaching. After spending months learning Fusion, Freecad and inventor I never was really satisfied with my design. So I decided to try out blender, followed your tutorials and never looked back. Now I’ve build a full-size co-bot, and the design both accurate and gorgeous. Precision modeling absolutely possible in Blender.

As someone who's been using Blender on and off since 2.8 and gone through multiple tutorials in the past, I have definitely learned new things going through these fundamentals videos! Never too late to revisit the fundamentals!

That 3d cursor snapping stuff is very convenient and saves me alot of frustration. Great job. 👍

very well done. blender is an enormously richtly functional tool, and to get a grasp on specifics does clearly not come without saying or just for granted. IMHO the density of the tutorial is fully adecuate, with decent flow.

3D cad isn't popular beyond engineering yet. Wait until high schools require this type of classes. it will become extremely popular very quickly in the next 2-5 years.

@@Keep-Making I think this is a really well thought out introduction. There are so many tutorials with old UIs and videos made by long time blender users who assume everyone already knows the basics. It's a really tough slog to even find a realistic starting point. I have a small Patreon of guitar repair people who are, among other things, exploring the practicality of 3D printers as a functional shop tool. This series is going to be continually posted as you create it.

Great. U could actually relocate the origin point of an object without the use of the 3d cursor. Click the object then go to options at the top right, then under transform, click on origin. That would let u move the origin alone to wherever u wanna place it.

Hi, question: shift + crtrl + right click doesn't work for me to snap the 3d cursor to a vertex. Using Blender 3.6.5 on macOS. What could possibly be set up wrong? I've reset all my custom keybindings back to the default of this Blender version already without luck. Help! Thanks in advance!
@villaalle
@villaalle 26 дней назад
you need to shift+right click, then drag, THEN ctrl and it should snap to the closest vertex

3.2.2 - selection to cursor doesn't work -- it keeps offset even if offset option is not selected. (third bug I've found in 3.22 -- Blender usually better than this with prod release.)

What drives me crazy is how quickly and easily I can be completely screwed. I did a duplicate (idk if it was in edit or object mode) and I’m trying to separate it (again idk which mode) and I end up with a ghost cube in edit mode, it is unselectable. No faces, vertices nothing can be selected. I go back to object mode and select it, return to edit mode and now the other cube is ghosted (slightly fainter grey and unselectable). Eventually I have to just delete everything and start over and not learn anything about where I was or how I got there 😭 How easily I blunder myself into bizarre territory and I’m nowhere near using nodes or renders yet. Idk head down and soldier on

You got a fair point Mannyman, I very much am making this course as a catch all for everyone to get to a pro level. I know it's long and it's going to get pretty darn complicated by the end but if you follow the course you can't really go wrong. If you jump the gun with mesh modeling you will very quickly end up with problems and have no idea why they are happening and how to fix them. I think in the future i'll have an intensive course that will be much faster plus support from me but that is still a while away.

When I "Shift-S-8" to move the object to origin point, it just shifts to be on the same plane axis, but not to the exact point like yours does on the video. Did I change a setting somewhere on accident?
@Keep-Making
@Keep-Making 3 года назад
Hey Noah, "Shift-S-8" Is to move the selection to the courser not the 3D courser to selection (2) or to Active (3) 6:28 Let me know how that goes for you, might be best to continue this in discord and the replying system in youtube is well... terrible...

I gotto say, I really don't understand any of this origin point movement. I'm still stuck on the "snapping to verticies" part of the last video because every time I try to snap the origin point, it just snaps to random segments around the grid, and ignores the cube itself. I'll think I finally have it on the corner of the cube but then I rotate the camera view around and its just on some random bit underneath the grid.
@Keep-Making
@Keep-Making 3 года назад
Hmmm i'm sorry to hear your having some trouble Richard, Remember that there is the discord if you ever need some help. If you are snapping to the grid and not the vertex be sure that you snapping point it set correctly: 4:49

@@Keep-Making Thank you for getting back to me. I actually figured out what I was doing incorrectly. I went to the time stamp you provided and looked really closely. What happened was, when you went to the "snap to" menu, I noticed down at the bottom you had "affect: MOVE" clicked already and mine was actually off for some reason. If you turn yours off and try to select any vertices with the ctrl+shft+righclick you will see why I was so frustrated and be able to replicate my issue. Thank you for the help and I hope this solves the problem for anybody else with the same issue!
@GaryEJohney

@@JJones-gw9vy I am a year behind you getting to exactly the same issue ctrl+shift+rightclick not selecting a vertex or doing anything. I have checked the Affect setting and still not able to move anything. I am still wondering if I have a missing setting somewhere. I see in Preferences Keymap that there is a 3DView Tool Cursor, set 3D Cursor set to mouse Left Button, which doesn't seem to do anything. I don't see anything for Cntl Shift Right Button yet. I can move but not snap with Shift Right Button.

Great but wtf somebody invented in BL a cursor and an origin and a pivot?! Whole civilised world uses world coordinate system=origin and user c.s.= temporary origin. And thats enough!
