It was extremely moving to hear this old instrument being played. Musical instruments are alive when they are played, and this is a wonderful thing with a 400-year-old specimen. I felt a sense of connection to the music I love.

I used to tune and maintain them all when I worked there. I think this was perhaps biggest sequence of working clavichords in any public museum, but it has all been changed now.

I'm surprised that the sound was as loud and rich as it was, clavichords aren't known for having a large, rich sound like that

From the level of the noise on the recording, I think the volume was turned up a lot here so we could hear it better. In the room I'd imagine it was very quiet. Well, that, or there's a small plane taking off in the next room ;)

Very interesting. I wonder- Bach played Clavichord, but was it that small? How could he play the Goldberg Sonatas on it? It sounds like a big lute, but the damp sound is a little unsatisfactory. The clavichord must be very old and still works - thank you.

There were (and still are) other kinds of clavichords, from later periods, the 18th c., like the bigger, louder, Saxon clavichord. Search them and you will find pics.

If you didn't have the red cloth, both sides of the string would sound at the same time.

whats the difference between the clavichord and the harpsichord?
@DashieDasher
@DashieDasher 8 лет назад
Mary V If I understand correctly, there are a few differences between harpsichord and clavichord. The clavichord is fretted, meaning that several keys hit the same string in different places to produce the notes one step up or down from the adjacent key, this means also that some keys cannot be pressed at the same time. With a harpsichord each key has it's own set of strings. On a harpsichord, the strings are plucked rather than hit, whereas on the clavichord the strings are hit directly by brass heads. Clavichords were much more portable and much lighter than the harpsichords as well.
@MichaelGrey11

Clavichord are like a MacBook Pro whereas a Harpsichord is like an iMac
@maksphoto78
@maksphoto78 8 лет назад
+Mary V Clavichord strikes the strings with a hammer (like in piano), while harpsichord plucks the strings with a plectrum, producing a sharper sound.
