Original Dixie Chicks West Texas Wind Live on American Music Shop

At the beginning, the Dixie Chicks were four. At some point the band broke up, losing Robin Lynn Macy and Laura Lynch, and became a three-member band with Martie and Emily and Natalie Maines.
In the early 1990s the Dixie Chicks, four "big hair" musicians from Dallas, came to Winfield, Kansas, for the annual (third week in September) Walnut Valley Festival.
They were, of course, a big hit at the two or three (?) Winfield festivals where they performed. After their shows they would sell their CD albums and T-shirts at a table set up near the main stage. I bought a T-shirt proclaiming:
"Dixie Chicks:
The Rooster Crows,
But the Hen Delivers".
This is an excellent version of this great song, because not only are the four original Dixie Chicks there, there's also Mark O'Connor and Jerry Douglas, and three other musicians that unfortunately I don't recognize.
Videos of Laura Lynch singing seem to be rather rare, so this is a special treat and hopefully it will stay available. I am posting it here because it seems to be hard to find where it used to be found.
I'm not sure of the recording date, but I'd guess between 1991 and 1993.
(Using their names at the time)
The Dixie chicks were, from left to right:
Martie Erwin (fiddle, vocal)
Robin Macy (guitar, vocal)
Laura Lynch (electric bass, lead vocal)
Emily Erwin (banjo, vocal)
second row, left to right:
Jerry Douglas (dobro)
Mark O'Connor (mandolin)
3 unidentified

@@cchikkybabe They're honestly one of the most overrated bands ever, at least with Maines in the group. They've become a bunch of cringey edgelords like Maren Morris. They can't tell us enough how they're not a country band and that country music sucks, even though it's what made them famous. They're also a bunch of cowards who go where the political winds lead them, hence why they dropped Dixie from their name. They were perfectly fine being called the Dixie Chicks for 30 years. This is a special example of all the band members knowing while they are playing that they are doing something very special. I know that feeling, and it is so powerful. And they have it locked in for the entire song. Also, the list of female lead vocalists who play stand up bass, especially like she does is very very short.

I have to say I am LOVING her voice and her bass playing and hating the fact that she has passed away. There was something that I was hearing that I had to go back on, and it starts at 1:14 but the note is at 1:16 - she slides right into a deep bass register with "yeah" and it;s wonderfully perfect. Her whole performance is perfect. Love the way she looks at the fingerboard before the half step climb, whole new perspective on DC. In fact listen to the beautiful passage at 1:16 on and how she so purely sings the 2 words "guitar" and "song".. Goose bumps.

Wow, this is very breath-taking. I always overlooked the Dixie Chicks, because I thought they were just Spice Girls who play instruments too. What a prick I was. This band existed way before the spice and had a bassist too, Laura Lynch. A bassist I didn't know existed until her death. The video says she stopped being part of the Dixie Chicks at some point, so, even if young me was willing to listen to them, I couldn't learn about her anyway. And she had an electric double bass too! I always thought bassists were reluctant to using them (I mean, Jeanette Williams never used it until recently), yet Laura is able to make hers sound fine.

Beautiful music, indeed. I don’t think I ever knew there were four chicks. I’ve always loved Natalie’s voice but I thoroughly enjoyed the lead here and the blend of all players and singers. The ‘90s were my avid country dance days, so I remember when the Chicks went from unknown to being absolutely huge in my part of the world. Regardless of any politics, art is art and democracy means being open to healthy dissent. Art is a good way to express it, so I’ve stayed a fan throughout. Proud eternal Chicks fan. 🇨🇦
