Usually, there is absolutely nothing worthwhile on my Facebook Marketplace, but I was surprised when I saw this custom-color Gibson Explorer from 1984 listed by its original owner show up. I drove up to Michigan to meet up with him and sealed the deal. I paid him more than a dealer was offering him and I'm happy to add it to my personal collection.

I wonder if the magnets aged because I've never heard such a good sounding ceramic pickup? What an awesome guitar. To be honest I think you heated up your pot too much and that's why the volume doesn't completely shut off. If it was a take off it increases your chance. I always throw out and solder new. Cleaning the tip, then pre soldering the tip, allowing the gun to heat up and prescratching the pot helps (if new) because it's prewaxed. It definitely seemed like you had a swimming pool of solder and that also increases your chances of a bad contact. Merry Christmas!

Austin, could that be the "Regal" Blue color that I asked you about? It was listed as a Gibson color option for the XPL series of Gibson guitars from 1984-87. I have not been able to find a color swatch/sample anywhere online or even most of the big vintage guitar shops across the US haven't been able to find an example to share with me. It appears to be a VERY RARE color option from that era. Let me know if you think that's the color as it's the only one I have never seen of the 8 color options for the XPL in 1984.

I was just checking out my old Union Jack Explorer that I sold a few years ago. Mine was from the same day but a few numbers after. My first impression was that was a designer series because of the configuration of the knobs. Might be able to help with your investigation. As for the tailpiece, mine had the same kind of marks on the bottom of it. That is original. They did not have the same fit and finish that more pricy explorers had or have. Just thought it was cool I happened on this video and got so close to the guitar I used to own just a few numbers off.

I can't decide which I'd rather have more....the Explorer.....or that train set! I tell this tale quite often but the best guitar I had was an Explorer. I think it was a late 70s. All natural finish with all gold appointments. I loved that guitar. It was stolen from my house in 2004. I lost the notebook where wrote the serial number down. I checked every pawn shop in Lexington for months afterwards but it never turned up. I'd give almost anything to get her back. But after almost 20 years I know I'll never see her again. 😔

The vertical checking only on alder bodies could be from whatever they were using to seal the wood prior to finishing. Nitrocellulose lacquer reacts to everything in so many odd ways.

Glad I checked this out! Your Explorer purchase reminds me of a guitar purchase of mine year's ago, on which I got a really nice deal. I didn't need it, but just liked the way it looked. It is the cheaper, econo-line, bolt-on neck, model of B.C. Rich's Explorer-inspired "splash"-shaped (can't recall name) 6-string electric. It has an almost identical metallic blue finish to that of yours. It has a Strat-style spring-loaded vibrato bridge, uncovered humbucking pickups, and heavy neck-dive (oh, well!). Normally, I'm not drawn to wild solid body guitar shapes. But, to me, there is something sexy about this model's shape, especially in photos I seen of this model finished in white. That's why someday I'd like to refinish it in white.

I watched that part several times. I had mentioned in an earlier video that I was a bit "annoyed" with Trog because he was cutting away from showing his playing to overlaying reel shots of the guitar. This little playing trick is something that I would have missed out on if he would have done that in this video. I watch this channel for the guitars and the little riffs and runs that are played, this is a perfect example as to why. Thanks Trog for going away from the "cut away" editing!

That blue finish is exactly the one I had in mind for a guitar model I would have had homemade but in a diamond shape. Concept for it is something I believe I have mentioned here before, made of polycarbonate instead of wood, chambered like a thin line model, including three P90 pickups and synonymous fingerboard scale and electronics with the guitars built by/for Brian May. Since I just purchased an electric guitar for myself to round out 2022, I have sidelined this idea indefinitely.

Merry Christmas Austin glad you got another nice explorer I think it sounds great probably just needs a new bridge volume pot and it'll be 100%. Looks like somebody did some work on it that did not really know what they were doing. My dad repaired TVs South of Hollywood and close to Herb Albert's A & M records where he came during the Holidays to buy TVs from me. Needless to say I had no choice but to learn electronics too. Repairing the Gibson Explorer is nothing to repairing audio equipment and TVs. So fooling around with electric guitars unless it was a MIDI guitar like the PG-780 from a joint venture between Ibanez and Casio. That guitar once sold I stayed with using Roland's GK-3 and the GI-20 so I now can use any sound modules which I have 1 Edirol SD-80, 2 Roland's SC55 & SC88ST and 2 EMU Proteus 1 and the FX. I know this because I needed more space and rewired the equipment to another space within this house. Writing using MIDI can be tiresome! Changing a potentiometer is nothing compared to electrolytic compacitors.

I've bought a guitar or two off of the back of a pickup truck. One is still my main practice guitar. Kid gets a plastic dinosaur, Dad gets a $2k guitar. Cool.

Wow. I generally do not like humbucks. But those clean tones were fabulous. Nice guitar, great find. 👌🎶
