This video looks at the Original Ricoh GR Digital (GRD) Mk1 Camera which was released back in 2006. I've been using this discreet pocketable camera for a few months now and I continue to be amazed at the quality of the images, especially the gritty 'filmic' Black and White images that it can conjure up.
This video takes a more in-depth look into the camera compared to my previous video on this camera and runs through my views on using the camera with lots of sample images associated with the positives and negatives of using the camera to try and help empahsise certain aspects to help determine whether the positives outweight the negatives?
Introduction 0:00 - 1:00
Feature Overview, Why the Original GRD? 1:00 - 4:29
Sample Images 4:29 - 5:55
Negatives (4) / What I Don't Like 5:55 - 10:08
Positives (6) / What I Like 10:08 - 16:35
Do the Positives Outweigh the Negatives? 16:35 - 17:35

I love the film version of this camera. Mine eventually packed up and they're too expensive now, and since colour film is getting ridiculous I decided to buy a GRD for colour shots. Hungry waiting for it to arrive from Japan.

Like any cameras that have achieved 'cult' like status e.g. the Ricoh film version or the Contax T2 cameras, that status pushes their prices up to stratospheric eye watering values and into the hands of collectors rather that mere mortals that actually have an interest in shooting with them. Thanks for watching.

You have some good videos on this particular camera! I just ordered one from eBay and can’t wait to try it out. I have to abandon film for a bit, since it’s unreasonably expensive at the moment, and I think this old GR might give me something close to film! I’m super excited! Thanks for the info!

Thanks MD, I still use the camera as it takes up no room, I can operate it with one hand, it's very discreet, the snap focus mode is great and it does produce some great film like b&w images. I do struggle a little sometimes with overexposure but suspect that on occasion I expect too much from it. Hope you enjoy your new camera.

Chris, I really enjoyed this video and your pictorial. I appreciate all the hard work you put into these interesting insights. I would really recommend the first Ricoh GR 16mp I think you’d love it for your style of photography.

Thanks CR, I wasn't sure whether the first Ricoh GR was going to be a patch on the GRD; does it do better at highlights and how is its black and white mode in comparison?

@@ChrisEdgecombePhoto You’re welcome. It’s a very intuitive and ergonomic camera. Yes both the black & whites and colours are all excellent. The lens is also exquisite. It offers real value for money these days too.

I remember first video. Good results are shown here. I got one GRD for me as well and GRD III. Original is cute to use once-in-a-while and it is same charger, batteries with GRD III. GRD feels like real classic camera, while GRD III is up to date run&gun.

I have this camera. I bought it with the adapter and lens hood for £130 including postage from Japan.I thought I would get the 21mm lens converter but love the 28mm equivalent so much I haven't done that. I've never had trouble with dust. I, like you love the results. I use a Fujifilm X10 for colour.

I don't worry about the dust too much, its easy to remove in post. Thanks for commenting, I have the Fuji X-E1 for colour. Chris.

I have the GRD3 and it's a gem of a camera. I can slip it into my pocket and take with me anywhere and that makes me take more photos. Oddly enough in many regards it outperforms my Sony xperia 1 sensor, which is a 10 year newer technology. The colours look more true to life and the noise has a character that looks much more agreeable to me. It shines with out of camera black and white photos and not just due to the pleasant grain but also due to how it renders tones.
@ChrisEdgecombePhoto
@ChrisEdgecombePhoto 2 года назад
Its CCD sensor is probably one of the reasons why the colours in these cameras look good. Thanks for the comments.

@@ChrisEdgecombePhoto yes I agree, foilage and skies in particular look so much more natural and vibrant and it doesn't look like simple saturation boost

I would add another con that it can only take a max 1 GB SD card. Can be hard to find. Love the whole lineup. Great video.

Thanks J, 1gb is a lot of photos though if you only shoot jpg with it, it's showing that I can take 269 with a 1gb card....I'm shooting an old Fuji 4700 Zoom that takes smart media cards at the moment, I bought a 32mb one (that's right, mb not gb) and that can hold a mere 18 fine images from the 2.4mb sensor ..

I own the Original GRD1. It is wonderful in many ways for photographers. But I have question here: GRD1 doesn’t have the option to choose your distances for SNAP focus mode…..so every time I try using the Snap focus mode I’m never sure what distance(1m?, 2m?, 5m? Infinities?) is there solution to it? Firmware update would fix it? Or am I missing something?
@ChrisEdgecombePhoto
@ChrisEdgecombePhoto 11 месяцев назад
It doesn't have the ability to change the snap distance; that functionality came in later models. For the original GRD the manual indicates that the Snap shooting distance is fixed at 2.5m.

Im thinking of getting one of these older ones soon. I've watched a video where someone with a lx100 used a litre soda bottle. Cut off the big end and put it against the lens with a vacuum on the other end end of the bottle. I guess it would depend on the camera to make sure you do not damage anything.
@ChrisEdgecombePhoto
@ChrisEdgecombePhoto 2 года назад
Is that to get rid of the dust? There are a couple of specs on mine but it's not that bad in my opinion.
@sdhute
@sdhute 2 года назад
@@ChrisEdgecombePhoto yes however you would need to be careful to make sure the lens is open. If your not having big issues it might not be something you would want to attempt.

Awesome. I got the GRD. What's your setting. I seem to get anything sharp on my photos. Thanks
@ChrisEdgecombePhoto
@ChrisEdgecombePhoto 2 года назад
Hi thanks for watching. I generally keep it on 'Snap' focus unless I'm targeting something specific which I will then choose a spot AF. In my B&W settings, I generally keep it on +1 contrast and sharpness. There isn't really a whole lot more to change.

@@ChrisEdgecombePhoto ok thank you. Practicing more then. Wondering if the GRD1 is much better than the 4
@ChrisEdgecombePhoto
@ChrisEdgecombePhoto 2 года назад
@@strangeapprentice I only have the first one as I was interested in it's 'grain' and film like qualities for B&W images so can't help with that query. It's not a camera I would choose nor any of the GRD series if I wanted really digital sharp looking images to be honest. I would look at the later GR APS-C cameras if I wanted sharper images but the same functionality with respect to snap focus, etc.,

Hey man! Enjoy the Channel. Quick Quesion: I got this beauty a few days ago, but it somehow seems to say "that i don't have a memory card inserted" even though there is one inside. Any Idea how to fix that? And Question #2: Everybody uses this cam for BW shooting in JPEG i heard. Can you tell me how to set up my SETTINGS to end up with these results? Cheers, and all the best!

If memory serves me right, it won't take too large a card so maybe the one you have is too big capacity wise. I'll double check the settings I use and post them here later. Thanks for the kind comments.
