Hey Good Lookin' (1982) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #HeyGoodLookin
From Cool World creator Ralph Bakshi, Hey Good Lookin' is an outrageous, nostalgic and adult take on a more innocent time. Well, not that much more innocent: not every street corner was a Happy Days setting. Our hero, Vinnie, leader of the ragtag gang known as the Brooklyn Stompers, plays it cool. His lady, Roz, thinks he's the most wonderful thing on two legs. And his off-the-wall, hot-wired friend Crazy Shapiro would die for the honor of Vinnie and the gang. They're all sympathetic and familiar characters turned loose in a funky, surreal cartoon landscape that really packs a punch, just as the '50s-styled soundtrack of original songs by John Madara and Ric Sandler evokes playful memories. With Fritz the Cat, Heavy Traffic and Cool World, Bakshi made animation history mixing mature themes and hip humor. If you know his work, then Hey Good Lookin' is up your alley.
Directed By Ralph Bakshi
Starring Richard Romanus, David Proval, Jesse Welles

there's something grody and gritty about Bakshi's films that you just don't get with others. even with all the rotoscoping and shortcuts, he really captures that unique trash and grime, the feeling of wild abandon and anxiety the entire country was going through. not like today's, it seems like a different kind of beast. cheers, to the 20th century.

@@brendansweeney9719 I first thought Hey Good Lookin' was pretty boring too, especially after I watched Bakshi's amazing Coonskin. But when I rewatched it, I thought that it's actually a very good and entertaining comedy, probably the weakest of Bakshi's works, but still actually great. If you didn't watch Coonskin though I highly recommend it, it's pure gold.

This was kind of a fun and occasionally fun nostalgic picture. But Bakshi's movies usually really stood for something. One of the trademark of Bakshi's cartoons is that his characters and situation are always life-sized, no matter how "cartoony." And he wants to show us what "the era of Eisenhower" really was like. OK, we know the decade wasn't really like "Happy Days" or any other of the shows that came out around that time. This kind of gang... it's not news. Or anything really special.

Please uploader, at least remove this and up the correct trailer. This was a bumper that was show during matinee's. There were three trailers (if you want to count this one), Contrary to popular belief, WA has all three and refuse to release this onto dvd, As it stands the film is also being rumored to now public domain, which is also bullshit. The claim stands still that original film print was damaged and the oxide was worn off in spots hence rendering it from release. Facts are facts..this film was NOT stored properly (along with any other movies) and It's a shame bc it should have been released by now. Although it has been scheduled now 5 times for repair and was vetoed...Pathetic..

Now some people might be wondering 'Man, were the jackets that greasers wore back in the 50s really come with all of those zippers? Did greasers back then really grease their hair up?' Answer: Yes and No. Yes, greasers wore jackets like in this movie, but they didn't have hundreds of zippers on them. As for the greasy hair? That's a definite 'Yes.' That's why they were called 'Greasers.' They used hair grease to slick their hair back to make themselves attractive for the ladies, like Roz.

I saw this movie today, in a crap resolution sadly (264p). I can't agree that it's a good movie. There are two big flaws: 1. Vinnie isn't anywhere near as well-written as Crazy Shapiro. In every scene he's in, Crazy answers the question of why he's called "Crazy Shapiro." He's a show-stealer, but not in a good way. Maybe if Vinnie had been given the attention that Crazy received (ironically), he would have ended up a better character. Speaking of which, Vinnie is a dirty coward but in all of the scenes his cowardice shows up he appears to just be doing the smart thing rather than genuinely being a coward. 2. The conflict between the Chaplains and the Stompers is never explained. We never get to see why the two hate each other so much. Even with "racial tensions were high back then" they still could have made a good back-story out of that. Maybe it would have ended up better if it was an animated parody of films set in the '50s instead of a deconstruction. Actually, with a big enough budget that could have worked. Granted it would probably have to be PG, but there's nothing wrong with a PG cartoon. Still, I'd love to see what the live-action/animated version looks like.

THIS was the trailer?! I can see why it bombed. It wasn't just an explicit R-rated cartoon at a time when they weren't really the money-makers they are now. I know it's supposed to be a "teaser trailer"--but it fucking sucks! I imagine this thing was pretty close to the '50's--the way they really were. In a big cartoonishly exaggerated kind of way. Still, not very enlightening. It wasn't great. Bakshi's films are usually so inspired. He called this "his best film." It wasn't.
