Learn about the mysterious history of the people of Madagascar. The great island of Madagascar is home to the Malagasy people whose heritage is both from Africa and Asia. Not only does this video explain the African and Asian origins of the people but it looks into scientific data about genetics of the peoples which show that the people of Madagascar also have DNA in common with the peoples of Polynesia. Showing that the non-African side of their heritage is perhaps more complicated than what was previously thought. Besides all that we talk about how specifically the African aspect of the Malagasy history comes from the part of Africa north of the Zambezi River and how the Asian part of the Malagasy comes from Indonesia; specifically the Indonesian island of Borneo. Additionally we look at the languages of the island and how it's part of Malayo-Polynesian structure of languages. Which gets its name from the Malay Archipelago and the islands of Polynesia.
The exact time of settlement of the island is also discussed in this video. Traditionally dates of 1500 years ago to 2000 years ago are typically given for the first human arrival but new research shows that the first humans arrived in Madagascar 11000 years ago.
Culture is also a part of the video. During most of the video you will get to see historical drawings of the island, its architecture, fashion and its culture. Madagascar is unlike anywhere in the world, from epic landscapes to its incredible wildlife. But the people are rarely talked about. I hope this video helps more viewers begin to learn about the extraordinary and beautiful cultures of Madagascar.

Its because we invented Outrigger and double hull (Catamaran) oceanfaring brother. The idea that we drifted off and accidentally found stuff is so colonial and eurocentric. Our ancestors were already expert navigators when Europe was still in the dark. Its almost insulting. Greets from Maluku Alifuru

The missing link in Malagasy, Polynesian connection is in Maluku. East Indonesia. This area was the original breeding ground between austronesians and melanesians. The Maluku people are basically Melanesian in origin but mixing heavily with later influxes of Austronesian dubbed Maluku people the "True Polynesians" of SE Asia. Maluku has been a seafaring nation since beginning of times all our origin myths involve the ocean and navigators. Even the Polynesian mythos about Hawai'ki is believed to be in the Island Seram, where according to Moluccan myth our first humans originated and our tree of life is situated. Might be worth researching that some more. Missing links and all.

A Portuguese account described how the Javanese people already had advanced seafaring skills and had communicated with Madagascar in 1645 The Javanese are all men very experienced in the art of navigation, to the point that they claim to be the most ancient of all, although many others give this honor to the Chinese, and affirm that this art was handed on from them to the Javanese. But it is certain that they formerly navigated to the Cape of Good Hope and were in communication with the east coast of the island of São Lourenço (San Laurenzo - Madagascar), where there are many brown and Javanese-like natives who say they are descended from them. - Diogo do Couto, Decada Quarta da Asia

They are sea people.. they still using the sea as their market until today.. oh yeah, I speak like I'm no longer in Borneo.. that's right.. my ancestors decided to stay in Malaysia..

So from genetic articles, which focuses in Taiwanese Aboriginals, the Taiwanese Aboriginals left their island about 4000 years ago and spread through out the Pacific, making the Polynesian settlements. Of that same Taiwanese Aboriginal people, some went West....into the Phillipines, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Borneo is said to have been one of their settlements. And no one knows why but some of these Borneans decided to venture further west and these are the ones that hit Madagascar. Malay and Pacific Islanders actually have real close genetic relation with each other, so that is why "Polynesian" comes up. It is said that the Polynesian genes can be traced back to those Aboriginal Taiwanese people.

I was wondering which East African groups contributed to the Malagasy? Was it just East African Bantu tribes?
@redspiritmask
@redspiritmask 3 года назад
That's a great question. According to the National Academy of Sciences, a genetic study was done and it was concluded that concluded "The Bantu gene flow represents at least 60% of the genetic background, whereas Austronesian gene flow represents around 30%" So doing the math that means there is 10% that's unknown in their study. They go on to say that this could be from more recent migrations or from an older population. Now, considering that Penn State University recently showed that Africans reached the island 11,000 years ago, and factoring in the fact that Bantu Expansion theory doesn't go back that far, I think we can assume those first African Malagasy were not Bantu. As for which specific culture groups make up the DNA of the Malagasy, I haven't seen a study about that so far. It is probably difficult for scientists to determine the specifics which is why most study's use the broad term of Bantu instead of mentioning specific Bantu cultures.

Intriguing but I'd lean towards that earlier radiocarbon evidence being either mistaken or from temporary migrants. The most likely to me still seems like it would be Austroneasians travelling from Indonesia to Madagascar, establishing a base, and then quite quickly (less than 50 years) continuing on to the East African coast and thence sparking a large migration from there. I should note that Bantu languages didn't not yet exist in East Africa prior to about 2000 years ago. That the Indian Ocean islands, other than Madagascar, were not settled when all Pacific Islands were would be explained by me as the winds not being favourable towards exploring Eastwards. In the Pacific journeys were made against the wind so that at any point the explorers could turn around and hurry home. In the Indian there is a vast stretch where island hopping isn't possible, so journeys Westward would most likely be one way affairs. Those who made it to Madagascar probably couldn't return (a similar thing might have happened with New Zealand as the Maori quickly lost their ocean-going skills and New Zealand was settled from islands distantly to the East). Without being able to return there would not be any news going back to Indonesia encouraging more exploration. This is for sure a tricky problem to think about though, more data of all types (genetic, linguistic, archaeological) would definitely help!
@redspiritmask

Thank you for your comment, it was a very interesting read. Although I still agree with what I researched you make some interesting points and also I really appreciate that you are polite. A lot of times when people disagree with my research they get needlessly mean. So I'm very happy that you were polite and that you explain your reasons for disagreeing. I hadn't really thought about the wind direction stuff that you mentioned, that was neat to learn. By the way, I also have a video about the art of Madagascar, if you have time, I'd be curious to hear what you have to say about that video as well.
@korakys
@korakys 2 года назад
@@redspiritmask Some extra points, after listening again: radiocarbon dating is error prone, but the people who do it do know this of course so they would take lots of measurements to be sure, however I think you said this was a meta-study which would mean that the person making the claim didn't do the dating themselves. If the animals have Bantu names then almost certainly the Austronesians didn't bring those animals but adopted the Bantu names when the animals arrived from mainland Africa. I don't remember if I checked the wave and wind patterns when I wrote that first comment so I could be barking up the wrong banana tree with that, although, from memory that mystery plane crash had wreckage wash up on the east coast at about that latitude so probably not. It wouldn't surprise me if there was a simultaneous colonisation, Madagascar is a big place, but for the light skin Austronesians to come to dominate the social hierarchy...I find it unlikely they could do that with the Bantu being long established there first. The temporary visit idea is floated, I guess it's possible but I struggle to think of any other piece of uninhabited land of such size that was passed over for settlement.
@redspiritmask
@redspiritmask 2 года назад
Yes from what I recall they were not doing the dating themselves, they were looking at a culmination of data that had been collected over the years. And yes I recall in my reading that academics came to that same conclusion about the Bantu peoples bringing the animals with them to the island. Specifically I think that was mentioned in the book I referenced. Well I'm sure there's still more to discover about the story of the settlement of the island and hopefully we'll continue to learn more as scientists continue to do more archeological digs. Here's another possibility, keep in mind the following statement is just my own opinion, perhaps instead of it being a temporary settlement the first initial African settlement may have instead been a very small population from Africa and perhaps that's why the Austronesian language element are more dominate but yeah I'm just making a random guess here. However since the academics do bring up the possibility of temporary settlement, it should be noted that temporary settlements have happened elsewhere in history. An example I can think of is in the ninth century A.D., the Maya abandoned the great city of Tikal, I think the reason is still a mystery but it may have been related to bad weather like droughts. And a similar drought event could maybe have led to early African settlers leaving the island.

This so called research by foreign researchers is amazing . Does the claim that the Malagasy are of Indonesian descent continue? This research is now one of them. Two things I offer you are your turn to think. First: The creation of a sentence in Malagasy is as follows: Verbe + Complement + sujet. But in Indonesian it is Sujet + Verbe + complement. Second: The King of Indonesia even told President Zafy Albert that the Malagasy are not Indonesians but descendants of the "gola" and came to Indonesia. The word Gola advises you foreign researchers to know the meaning of the word. . But the ancestors of the ancient Malagasy had a strong kingdom, but it was during this period that he was a captive that caused him to leave his homeland. We, the Sons of the Ancient Nobles and many of the Malagasy people, know our true origin, the Malagasy people. We are sad to see foreign researchers who don’t even know our story but probably do every time they speak.

So may we know where is this Gola you are mentioning on the map, please. Thanks! Is that word "gola" related to the one I am so used to hearing "fahagola"?
@albertrazafindrakoto9600
@albertrazafindrakoto9600 Год назад
OK! The word gola is an ancient Hebrew word and is also referred to today in Malagasy. Gola are an era of reference to the time of captivity. This means that when the sons of Israel were taken captive to Assyrie. Many Assyrian words are also preserved in Malagasy, not just Hebrew as "Salama" which is not sick. "sourit" and "sourat" are the Assyrian words meaning "Route"and "Scriptur"

More recent findings?...Of course history was rewritten by Europeans so they said the Island couldn't have been populated by Africans... Madagascar is directly off the coast of Africa...yet people were still lead to believe ones came from 5 times as far away, as Indonesia & accidentally discovered the island...Sounds like Columbus "discovering America", even though Africans were already here first...Good research tho

By DNA Trace, yes they come from an island in Indonesia, "Borneo" by study. The name of Madagascar actually european inveted term, Actual name "Malagasikara", refer to the people live in there, Malagasy People. Etymology, the name of Malagasikara, seem derived from Malay & Javan, "Malay Sekar" / "Malaka Sekar" (Malay Flower Bloom, Malaga = Malay/Malacca, Sekar = Blooming Flower). Sekar have many meaning in Indonesian Family language, which can mean "Dry", "Flower", "Blooming", "Sowing Seed", we can assume the meaning as "New Flower to be Bloom". I Assume, When arrive on the Island, They found the island to be Fertile and Wide. They make outpost there to planting several Canoe Plant for their supply in the Futures, and renamed the Island as "New Flower", some people stay, some people are back to homeland. In my region there is a myth, about seafarers wish they came back to an island to harvest what they sow (Menyekar) in there. also, the name of their King back then, Andrianjaka. Andri is common names in indonesia, by malay people. Jaka is common names in indonesia, by java people.
