1997 - 2007. The top OM model vs. the top 2M model.
The feature the sets both models apart from others in the series is the shape of the stylus. The OM40 has a Fritz Geiger/Van den Hul shape while the 2M Black has a Shibata shape. Both are line-contact shapes with a profile close to that of the cutting head used in vinyl record production.

I have had the Super OM40 for many years but it was invariably put away as I found the overall balance bright and unforgiving. It is now sold. I would suggest the OM20 is the sweet spot in the range.

Thanks Nigel. I bought a TT recently that has a OM but no stylus. I've been wondering which stylus to buy.

OM series has an inferior generator design to SuperOM and it is easily distinguished by ear, there is more air and detail in SuperOM.

It’s system, loading, arm, and taste dependent. You can’t say one is preferred across the board, it isn’t.

You can also get low capacitance interconnects connecting the tonearm to the phono stage input (eg. Blue Jeans Cable LC-1) combined with a pair of y splitters and make loading plugs, 2 of eacb with 120k Ohms Vishay Dale resistor in each -- connect 1 plug to one side of each y splitter, and 1 to a channel of the phono input -- then a signal line to the open female connector of each plug.....you can have 150 pf or less capacitancr and loaded down to 33k Ohms......MAKES THIS SERIES MAGICAL !

Super OM40 sounds more detailed in a good way, is more expressive, and has better tone.

Black seems to pick up so much more of the background that it is very noisy. It kind of ruins the sound quality and once you spot it all you hear is the background noise. This recording maybe wasn't the best for the Black.

Thanks! Very interesting. This recording or turntable has a VERY loud background.

Out of the two I thought the Black's fuller sound was better, but they were both a little too cool when it comes to portraying he massed string tome of an orchestra.

I don't think we can honestly just put a "=" between the vdH and FG stylus shapes, especially since there's at least 2 variants of vdH and a couple of FG variants (3? more?). That being said, when the OM 40 was first released (or was it the LM 40 back then?), it did indeed have a vdH stylus shape, manufactured by Fritz Gyger's company as that's how vdH managed to produce his styli design on masse. Van den Hull didn't wait for his invention to be officially patented before licensing the manufacturing. Fritz used that to put his "own" FG stylus shape onto the market, which was a copy of vdH. Legal battles ensued. In the end, vdH's got the patent for his shape globally with the exclusion of Switzerland (where FG company is based). In turn, FG modified the vdH design in order to patent it themselves globally and offer it to cartridge makers. The rest is history. Van den Hull had to look for another manufacturing partner, putting vdH styli availability in a bit of a limbo, so Ortofon started using the FG instead ever since.

Interesting, So what 'FL' stylus shape were they using before VdH/FG for carts like M20FL Super / VMS 30 ?
@younghifi
@younghifi 9 месяцев назад
@@EssArrB FineLine is it's own stylus shape, kind of in the same class as Shure's HE and other "hyperellipticals". The FL stylus shape is still used by Ortofon today, in OM 30 and 2M Bronze and other "Bronze" MC cartridges. It was the top stylus shape offered by Ortofon in the 70s with some exceptions like the SL-20Q MC cart which sported a Shibata (one of the very few MC carts being marketed toward quadrophonic CD4 playback)

the 2m black has noticeable rumble which the super did not have resulting in quieter passages
@PhonoDirect
@PhonoDirect 6 месяцев назад
Its coils give higher output level, I would say the recordings were not properly matched regarding the equal loudness. Thus 2M Black sports higher rumble sensation.

Objectively, if we evaluate, what is the best in the top, VMS 30, 2M Black or OM40?
@younghifi
@younghifi 9 месяцев назад
From a purely technical perspective - OM 40 is the most advanced package out of all these. But if by "best" you mean "best sounding" then that's a different can of worms because these 3 carts have a different sound characteristic while also having some common elements. The VMS and earlier M20 series were much warmer sounding than the later cartridges. The goal for the OM was to sound as flat and linear as possible (kind of to rival CD playback), while the 2M generator is just a spin of the OM cartridge with bumped up lower and higher frequencies.

@@younghifi OM was ment to sound like CD before the Loudness War broke up. 2M was about to sound like CD after the war. I have VMS 30 MK II and to my ears it sounds way better than 2M Bronze.
