Dearest Friends and Buddies,
I am Ian and I reside in sunny Singapore. I love our Vinyl Community and Vinyl Music. Vinyl analogue playback is utterly blissful, and I want for fellow friends and buddies to engage in vinyl music for many, many years in their life, each vinyl buddy through their school life, through the hustle and bustle of daily work, accompany them through precious hours at home with their family members or in their hostel with their friends. Vinyl music is blissful, free of time smear, phase shift, pre-ring and post-ring that plagues digital playback. Vinyl buddies and friends can all attest to that. It is not warm in the “bassy warm” sense, it is not soothing in the sense that “everything gets smoothed out”. It is because it is analogue, very detailed, calm, invigorating, enthralling, dynamic, refreshing. In a word, blissful. Utterly :-D
I want for all to get the very equipment that will get us there. These equipment, I firmly believe, are present, and existent, even at affordable price points!..and I started off in Dec 2015 hunting out for them, selling off my own Rega RP6 (which my wife and I loved) to fund the first batch of cartridges for review: the 5 cartridges in Group A ($70-$80), and the 7 cartridges in Group B ($90-$130). Subsequently I told myself to set aside $500-$1000 per month from my monthly salary to buy equipment to review. My own money. Quite a hefty sum monthly, significant to me, as I am a salaried man. I know this is crazy. But I believe in every field, there are people who have to make the sacrifice to pursue their love for the greater good, and to serve, the community of friends. I have also downsized my car in mid-2017 so as to commit these monies to fund these projects. I totally, rigorously, and kindly reject all forms of donations, be they from friends, from retailers, from manufacturers. This is a hobby, and my teachers and advisors in life have advised me that to bring balance to life, and to be wholesome, one will engage in a livelihood (daily job or business) that earns the monies, and one will also simultaneously engage in a hobby/service in life that is non-competitive, non-monetarily-remunerative. My wife totally understands what I want to do for the community and she so kindly supports my decision and efforts. Vinyl music is a lovely hobby I hold dearly. Friends and buddies are my ultimate responsibility and my love. I want the very best for them, and to provide totally honest reviews. Moles exist in hifi forums, moles also exist from benefactors who donate. I do not want to remotely encounter any moles masquerading as benefactors donating to my cause, only to find out sooner or later that such donations were/are from certain manufacturers or retailers. Everybody will do things differently. I want to maintain my status as a common-folk, aspire always to adopt the Shokunin spirit: of spending the utmost diligent care, through unhurried work, never caring for returns, in perfecting their work for the community. The personal satisfaction of getting to the very best equipment in each price class to help all my lovely buddies and friends is, the only thing, in store for me :-D We toast to the joy and bliss of vinyl analogue music. Vinyl Music deserves our love and attention. Our listening. Our care.
We toast to the lively spirit of:
“Everybody will be dancing and doing it right!" - Daft Punk
Let's go, buddies and friends!!!
Warmest Regards,
~ ian :-D

Great review Ian. I bought my Nag MP150 partially based on your review and I've not been disappointed by it yet. One of the most impressive things about the MP150 is its ability to handle dense, complicated music with little effort while still maintaining separation and clarity. It never seems to be overwhelmed. Even when I would expect the music to bring the cartridge to its knees it never gives up and never seems to be working too hard. I love it.

Dear Buddy, thank you very much yet again for coming by and lending your kind voice. I am really jubilated myself to be able to use great carts with great performance at much cheaper prices than the industry would have us believe. :-D Really happy!!! So much gumption involved... YES!!!!!!!! :-D hahaha the victory is ours, the common folks, the reasonable, logical, consumers who believe in honest works by honest manufacturers who plough the ground everyday without resorting to advertisements on magazines (physical or online) indulging in the "you scratch my back, i scratch yours" vicious cycle, marketing and " tie-ups" with certain turntable manufacturers to whitewash us with poor products that we thought would be the bog standard... :-D we win from now on. We are all honest common folks. Thank you Buddy, again, for your precious time writing in. Very kind of you! Best Regards Brother!!!!!!!!!! ~ ian.

Thanks for another great review! Enjoy it very much. I bet you can imagine the smile on my face :-) while I am playing vinyl with the 150. Kudos to Nagaoka for engineering so many marvellous carts! For the look alone, I would have gone for the Ortofon. Such a minimalist and modern look. Fit well on my first deck of Pro-Ject Carbon Esprit White. My first cart was the 2M Blue until your recommendation of MP-100. When the 150 review came, the rest was history... The sonic difference between Ortofon and Nagaoka is stark. I can hear the difference even on a pair of cheap computer speakers. Thanks again for the time spent in producing in-depth review. VC owes you a lot! Can't wait for the next episode.

This is wonderful, Ian. I was so looking forward to getting back home so I could listen to to your appraisal. As you know, I've also recently acquired the MP-200 myself, so what a surprise to find it here in your generous as well as substantial round up. You've been fair to choose rated and recommended carts from the Hi-Fi press, so I was more than intrigued to see/hear if your findings balanced up with my own assessment in regards to the Nagaoka MP-200. Firstly I was quite surprised to be able to hear the differences, many of which were rather substantial. I'm thrilled to read that your findings matched mine. Its like having a grown up MP-110. It takes all the qualities of that fabulous cartridge and refines them even more. Dynamics, sound stage, clarity and resolution, and lower surface noise made the whole listening experience more involving and enjoyable. I noticed that things sound even better after a few weeks of play. Fantastic review, Ian ... reviews I trust 👍

I do my best to spend as much time with them as possible. Again, i want to say, that, messages from you, and others, is very important to me, because everything can be very daunting and bring me to my knees, but your messages and others', is the only propulsive force and meaning to me continuing to do these work. .. It's an Ortofon review, but I'm convinced once again I made the best choice of getting a Nagaoka cartridge. Now I have to work harder to get an upgrade haha. I really would like to shootout between all of them and let you guys know too😅💪✌!!!🎶🎵🎶🎶 Let me know if you have gotten to compare the two too!.... most of my friends said even the MP200 is better than the 2Mblack... but unless I have heard it myself, I wouldn't comment. The MP200 may become a benchmark for vinyl lovers as it combines all necessary musical qualities in a balanced and a coherent manner , add to this the correct price tag ................more than once spectacular performance of some very expensive hifi gear destroys the delicate harmony of what is music all about......................I think this Nagaoka is a real winner.

I SO love your in-your-face reviews! I really check daily on youtube whether you have a new video! To Joerie, where did you get one? I thought the Nagaoka's were quite expensive in the Benelux? What's interesting is that here in the Netherlands, they use Ortofon everywhere, but your tests consistently test them as lower end carts! Really cool! Oh, still saving for a new turntable, as my old Thorens TD160 had given up the ghost. I wonder whether I'll ever see you review my Ortofon MC3 Turbo. I kind of dread the day ;)
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 6 лет назад
Heh Buddy :-D !!!! How are YOU!?!!! :-D heard 4 months ago that your Thorens TD160 was "on its last legs"...and you have narrowed down your search to a SL1200GR, 1200G or a Planar6!! How? How? :-D
@erwindewit4073
@erwindewit4073 6 лет назад
Well, I guess I spoke too soon. Not about the Thorens, I disconnected it, because it just doesn't work properly any more. Unfortunately, as often happens, situations change. So in 2 or 3 months I'll know how much money I have to spend. Not really how I prefer things to be, but hey. For the GR and Planar 6, I'm just worried it might perform on a lower level than the rest of the set does, and I really don't want to sell it soon again.. Even though I think it'll be a gamble to a certain point. We do have some shops with these turntables, but many are set up poorly and their equipment is usually nothing like mine.. ;) Then again, maybe I'm worrying too much and overthinking it... So your video's and tests, and those of Vinyl Room really help :) Thanks!!

Weird, my answer never registered I see. Yep. But then our washing machine and dishwasher broke, cars had serviced and my wife decided to visit her sister in Australia to help her in her pregnancy. So all the savings disappeared very rapidly unfortunately. However, I'm well on my way again. Probably going to sell my Linn streamer as I use my turntable way more often than the streamer anyway. Which open things up yet again :) One thing I DO know: I want to try out different cartridges you looked at. Oh, I tried the Clearaudio MM and hated it, but we presumed it might be a rebadged AT95E, a 40 euro cartridge! Oh, I also really loved a completely rebuilt Thorens TD124 I heared. Wow! But we don't have any shops outside DJ outlets who sell the 1200G. And they're only interested in shifting boxes, even if they are 3500 euros. When I told them I'd like to hear it first, they were actually baffled. Perhaps Germany...

Ian, Glad to see the Grado out pace the 2MBr in the review. I could really hear the difference there with bass and treble details. Seems the MP-200 ran far ahead of the pack though. :-) I'm guessing how the RP2 review will go... MP-200 for the win! (Yet still hoping out for the Grado > the little guy has a special place in my heart - love that little cart!). Great review brother! -Brad

The whole review is based on personal taste of the reviewer and the emotional terms like "gives a lesson" et caetera, which makes it totally unwatchable. Instead, there are points which are much more vital speaking of cartridge reviews: - trackability: 2M Bronze has few to no IGD even on short tonearms, what about the MP200? - genre agnosticism: 2M Bronze is a quite universal cart, which allows to play audiophile-appreciated genres (jazz, classical etc.), 80's synth pop records and black metal equally good, in the mean time I have doubts about MP200's ability to do the same: it might be too bright for some genres; - used records: 2M line is pretty neutral to pops and clicks, whilst the brightness of MP200 might make the records from the 70's or 80's sound totally unlistenable. And many other points which are much more interesting to me as a cartridge consumer than the blind-loved serenades to Nagaoka :-)

Hi Ian, dryness or a limited tonal palette is exactly how I'd describe the Ortofon MM's I've heard. It looks like you are making a permanent home for the Croft, from what I can detect it has good reverb and ambient detail retrieval. Sorry to get ahead of you, I know your going to give us a review at some point. :)

Man he just hates the 2m bronze. I listen to this video over and over on different sources and can't really hear any difference. After listening to both I'm getting the 2M bronze and for me it's way better for my music style. The nagaoka mp-200 is to laid back and smooth and warm for Metallica and other hard rock music. You should add that in your reviews that your music choice will change which cartridge you should get and which is the best for different music choices

I find it amusing how many times I read comments where people talk about RU-vid's audio quality being terrible, yet I am able to detect a lot of the differences you are describing. Your reviews are exemplary in the way you select passages of music that demonstrate the differences in performance that you are describing.
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 6 лет назад
Dear Sir, thank you for letting me know your kind feedback. I am very thankful for your kind words and appreciation. Though not entirely reflective of the true differences when heard "live" over a two-speaker stereo system right in front of you, i am glad there are telling differences we can still appreciate. The differences are huge when heard live, and without the digitization uploading to youtube and viewers' subsequent viewing via another DAC layer that altogether introduces much time smear, phase-shift, pre-ring and post-ring into the process. I am glad all of you trust my honest judgement and review based upon what is heard live over a 2-speaker stereo, cartridge to phonostage to amp to speakers :-D Thank you Sir. ~ ian.
@napalmhardcore
@napalmhardcore 6 лет назад
I think part of the reason the differences translate well over RU-vid is the interplay between the speakers, the room and your recording device. Counter intuitively, I think this actually presents the differences better than if we were listening to a direct feed (where the differences might be lost due to our own equipment's influence). Certain characteristics such as transient response and tonality seem to be exaggerated, while certain subtle differences like micro-dynamics and imaging don't translate as well. Keep up the great work :)
@Lasse3
@Lasse3 3 года назад
Seriously .... Being able to hear the difference between a dog barking and a cat miawing will still be possible, even with youtube 320 kbps compression... Likewise, some of these cartridges sound vastly different to eachother, and yes that is easily heard and easily recorded, and easily conveyed through a youtube video. But just know, had you been there for real listening to these cartridges, you would have found these differences way more 'Outspoken'
@napalmhardcore
@napalmhardcore 3 года назад
@@Lasse3 I'm unsure whether you are addressing my first post or my second post. In the case of my first post, I was making the point that many people complain about RU-vid having poor audio quality. I think a lot of people (particularly self proclaimed audiophiles) over estimate the acuity of their hearing. Take a look at some blind test results of various audio codecs at various bitrates (as well as other blind listening tests that highlight BS claims from audiophiles) and you'll see how poorly people perform. If you are addressing my second post, I was speculating that the sum total of factors in the recording chain may actually pronounce some of the differences because the characteristics are being exaggerated by the room and then filtered by the microphone's position and frequency response.
@BarakaPDub
@BarakaPDub 6 лет назад
I somewhat anticipated and assumed what the results would be when I saw the title of this video in my subscriber feed this morning. Given the past performances of the Ortofon carts, I figured this one would in family with the Red and Blue reviews. I have a 2M Black but if I had seen your videos when I first started to jump back into vinyl, I would have steered clear of it now. Not to mention, the Shibata's while nice for detail, really exacerbate surface noise. I am not sure I would go back to a Shibata diamond again. The Croft is sounding really nice. It doesn't seem overly warm and produces a nice tone. Now I know what cartridge to go for to have a nice mid priced cart on my deck ;) I am planning to switch back to your gifted Nagaoka here in the coming weeks. Once again, great stuff Ian!

Very sad that they stop selling cartridges. They have already stopped manufacturung a while back, but you will be able to get replacement styli for some time (while stock lasts). I sometimes buy a few dirt cheap used shures and put jico or similar styli on for turntables i find, refurbish and sell. But yes, there are better out there.

After you are done with this group, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on mixing and matching stylus and cartridge. I have been very pleased with an MP-200 stylus on my 110 cartridge. I know that the 150 and 200 cartridges have even better internals, but the difference between just changing the stylus from the 110 to the 200 is impressive, and I think well worth the cost (~$130 on eBay direct from Japan).

I enjoy your video a lot. I currently own Rega P5 with Exact 2 and Maggi 1.6R. I wonder is it possible for you to do a comparison among MP-110, 150, and 200? So that we can understand the difference? I wonder the most significant difference is on the top end extension and resolution? Thanks for your feedback.

Hi Ian, great review of my former cartridge and were the reasons why I decided to upgrade it. Even on that sort of budget there are better alternatives I must say. Weather has been beautiful Ian the past few days, I even neglected the turntable so enjoy some decent sunshine and some long walks!! :D Really enjoying the RP8, and the Benz is just fabulous. I have a 2 mm spacer underneath but my dealer told me it wasn't entirely necessary. The clarity of this cart is astounding, matched with the low end punch given by the RP8, its heavenly! Speakers next on the agenda again I'm afraid (I can never be satisfied!!)

Woaaah!! Well done!!! Congratulations!!! Thank you for letting me know about the 2mm spacer. Thank you! Perhaps you have read the latest Rega book : "A Vibration Measuring Machine"! :-D it explains why Rega engineering prefers not to have spacers. But I think the improvement yielded by having a correct Stylus Rake Angle of 92deg with spacer adjustment, is better than having a suboptimal SRA without spacer adjustment. Thus, I stand by your decision. Speakers/ Sorry to ask Brother, what amplifier are you utilizing now? and speakers? elettrauno Brother i can only advise at this moment in time, that at US$350-$380, the most supreme cartridge would be the MP-200. I have not done the tests of the 2M Black, Nagaoka MP-500, Goldring 1042, etc as yet. And as such, really have to disappoint you that i can't be absolutely sure. The MP-500 sounded initially best to me. But i have not done the auditions vey thoroughly yet. It hurts me if i give the deduced/approximate advice and my friend, you, went ahead to get the cartridge and i later found out that that is not the best one eventually. But for €300, the best is the MP-200 easily!!!!💪💪💪😄😄😄

Nice review, Ian! I had a 2M Red for a while but returned it. I was skeptical as soon as I got it and took a close look. The actual cartridge magnetics looked suspiciously like their OM series. Plastics aside, is the 2M really anything new or is it just a OM make to look nice on a Rega? I was thinking about the Bronze after having tracking issues with the Red, but I had already tried the MP-110 with the MP-200 stylus and never looked back. Now I have a box full of carts and only the MP-150 and MP-200 get any play time. :) All that said, I do have a SuperOM with a Stylus 30 on it and it is a nice sounding cart. A bit bright, but supposedly that can be fixed with the correct loading at the preamp. I wonder if the Bronze is similar.

Thanks for another amazing review. So happy with the Nagaoka MP-110 that you recommended, such a well-rounded cartridge and amazing value. You can really hear the differences you show, even on RU-vid and they really matter, you not only hear a difference, on it's own the Bronze probably sound fine, but you can feel the difference and it makes you enjoy music so much more. I'm using the Nagaoka with the Musical Fidelity V90-LPS now, I already had a nice high quality linear power supply for it and you gave it a positive review. The power supply really improved the sound, so I hope it's comparable with the Schiit Mani ! Not sure if I ever want to upgrade to the MP-150 or MP-200 ( both still in my price range ), but then again the MP-110 is almost a year old and I must have put about 600 hours on it now. I even had to buy a much better DAC ( Chord Qutest ) to keep up with the sound of vinyl ! Thanks again and looking forward to your next review :)

The Ortofon 2M series are the classic example of style over substance. They are very sexy looking carts, but that is where it end. The Nagaoka are not pretty, but deliver performance beyond their price points. Excellent review, the difference is quite pronounced when you are engaged and listening. If your intent is to just hear music the Bronze would suffice, but if you are looking to immerse yourself and feel the music then their is no comparison. I just replaced my stylus, but I know for certain my next cartridge will be a Nagaoka 200. Thank you again for everything you do and the detail thorough analysis you present. Hello Ian, thank you so much again for all of the fantastic cartridge reviews! I purchased a Nagaoka MP-110 for my old Pioneer PL-300 based on your recommendation, and it sounds great. Since then, however, I have purchased a new turntable (VPI Prime Signature). My budget is small after buying the turntable, so I am looking for a somewhat inexpensive cartridge to put on it. The MP-200 was my first thought, but given its compliance number and light weight, it may not be a good match for the Prime Signature (tonearm mass is only 9g). The Ortofon 2M carts fall solidly into the "green zone of compliance". You seemed to really like the 2M Blue, but not so much the 2M Bronze. Would you take the Blue over the Bronze for your desert island cart, or should I look for something all together different?

Two years ago I succumbed to Ortofon's hype and I bought a 2M Black. I soon discovered that 70s era Shures and Grados sound better, and, thanks to RU-vid, I dissevered that that the 2M Bronze is better than the Black. Ortofon MMs are fine if your idea of a good LP is a barcoded reissue from Urban Outfitters. Meanwhile I went back to my Denon and Dynavector MCs.

As an owner of the 2M Bronze I was hoping it would fare a little better than it did. I was not able to audition any carts before I purchased it unless I took a 10 hour drive 1 way. It was however for me a big step up from the Rega Elys2 that it replaced so I don't regret the purchase. May have to look for the Nagaoka to try it out for myself. Hello Ian, disappointed to hear about the bronze😣 when I previously had the bronze I found it quite enjoyable as I do the 110 the question is is the 150 a big jump and it's a 200 even a bigger jump this is a big decision towards the dream budget system!?!?😃
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 6 лет назад
Yes Brother :-D the MP-150 is a big jump from the already excellent MP-110, and at $100 price difference from the mP-150, one can actually get the Boron cantileve and an even better stylus!!! Sound performance hike as well!! But, all: MP-110, MP-150 and MP-200, superb!!! I love them all, and I still play my records too with my recommended Grado Red, Goldring 1006 and Grado Green!!! Love them all! Here, i read that you are assembling a dream budget system....so yes!!! The MP-200 if possible :-D and if you don't mind its purple body (I like the green Bakelite-like hue of the MP-150 :-D ...hahaha). Of course, sound quality is the most overriding deciding factor!! Any other updates from your system bro>?

Hey great video can you answer me a question? This is my setup: Pro-ject esprit sb turntable Pro-ject tube box s phone stage Cambridge cxa60 amp Wharfedale Denton speakers I want to upgrade my speakers to kef ls50s here soon. Do you think the ortofon bronze would work good with my current setup and turntable or would it be too much and I should stick with the blue? Thanks in advance My set up is not nearly as nice as yours I only paid about 2200 bucks for everything I want to keep my turntable for now and just up grade my cartridge and speakers am I doing this right to get best possible sound quality with my budget?

After 3 years I have finally got round to connecting my PC to the USB input on my Audiolab 8200CD, now I am using the Audiolabs DAC I can clearly hear some of the differences you highlight. I am considering the 2M Bronze to replace the ageing 2M Blue currently fitted to my old Transcriptors/SME combo, so your review was most useful. It may well be that on audition it will prove to work as symbiotically as the 2M Blue, I hope so because I am not sure I can bring myself to fit an ugly cartridge to that deck :). Might I ask, were you comparing a brand new 2M with a bedded in MP200? All the best.

You are very good at finding good adjectives to describe sounds. I went to see the Nagaoka MP-110 with other eyes after your review. I am restoring a turntable here and it will be the one I will install on it. At the moment, I use a Grado Green, but since this other turntable is direct-drive I know it will not be a good fit in it because it is quite noise-prone. I look forward to a review of the Denon DL-110. I believe that at some point you will still have one to give your opinion about it. Cheers.

Time well spent listening to my friend Ian! Very interesting review. Were you able to get a Swagman lab power supply upgrade for the Mani? I am planning to get one in about 3 months. Thinking of doing this as I will not be able to do a full phono preamp upgrade for a while. Needing to get new speakers first as one of my old speakers is going out. Considering Focal Aria, Harbeth, Watkins Gen 4, ATC, Magnepan, and Golden Ear. If there is anything that may take more research and thought than getting a TT it is getting speakers. You have such a beautiful family. May the Lord bless them.

@HiViNywschannel 6 лет назад
AH!!! You and your brother with the TWO :-D Mani's are now considering the Swagman! I bought in one 2 months ago, but have yet to have time to unbox it and listen to my Mani through it. Apologies my dear Brother. Brother, you may drop the Harbeth. :-D They are like those overhyped cartridges, and many, many other speaker manufacturers beat them at their own game long time ago. I bought into the hype of Harbeths, and paid heavily for my mistake 3 year ago. Alan Shaw has also been very unkind to many vinyl lovers and spoke ungentlemanly against vinyl playback with subjective words unbecoming of a gentleman with integrity. Not just poor in terms of sound quality, and easily beaten by other speakers, the workmanship is actually poor. My new Harbeth Super HL5 plus actually has unaligned gaps within the rectangular grille crevice. And the edge veneer easily chips off when removing and putting on the grille. Absolutely horrendous, overhyped speaker from an unworthy owner. Sorry but many friends and I felt strongly, and firmly against Harbeths, and all of us have moved on. I second your Watkins Gen 4, ATC, Magnepan and GoldenEar choices :-D!!! And may I add: AudioNote AN-J, AN-K speakers. They are absolutely transparent, very, very clear, and dynamic, detailed and musical speakers. My wife waxed lyrical often during listening, about the AN-Ks I bought and taking residence in my room too. Warmest Regards Buddy!!! Hope you discover the AN-J, AN-K speakers!! ~ ian.

You reply is so much appreciated! By the way a small clarification. It my Dad who also bought a Mani and has a Nagaoka 110. He likes your videos as well and believes you give sincere advice. And he really appreciates how excellent his vintage Denon sounds with the Mani and 110. Good to see his beautiful vintage rosewood Denon sounding beautiful again. I was thinking the same thing looking at Alan Shaw comparing digital and vinyl in his video. He just does not get it at all. I have wondered if that transfers into the speaker designs and sounds like it does. Thank you for the direct and honest advice. I spoke to the Bill Watkins Jr. and had a great conversation. Very humble and down to earth. And they like vinyl. He said they sell Oracle tables at their store. Going to check out AN-J and AN-K. Your wife's endorsement intrigues me. If it is a speaker that truly moves the intellect and emotions then it is something special indeed. Best Regards!!!

I carefully listended your comaparison: It seems, that the taste is a big number here. In all aspects I'd prefer the ortofon, because it is brighter in the midrange and high. Probably that is a difference if age. I even would preferl the ortofnon blue against the Hana EL in your other comparisin, for the same reason.

I have used a Nagaoka MP11 Boron for years and will need to replace it as it has had many hours use. Having compared it to an Ortofon 2M Blue that I own I much prefer the MP11 Boron. The midrange richness produced by the MP11 Boron makes the sound of vocals and instruments so believable and realistic. Drum kits sound amazing with the MP11 Boron. I really believe the Boron cantilevers add so much to the improved performance of the Nagaoka Mp11 Boron and MP200 when comparing to cartridges of a similar price. Thank you Ian for producing such a detailed and informative video.

Dear Ian, great review. I want to point some more details on the configuration of Tonearm and cart. As we know: Technics tonearm eff. Mass is 12gr including headshell. Technics headshell = 7.5gr. Jelco HS=11.5gr delta= 4gr. So using Resonance calculator www.resfreq.com/resonancecalculator.html We get: Bronze , T+cart=12+7.2+4(jelco delta), compliance=22 which gives you 7.05Hz. Using Technics HS , will give you better 7.74Hz though still less than 8Hz. Nagaoka MP200 Cart weight=6.5gr Compliance = 7.2 (100Hz) ,12.6 (10Hz) T+cart=12+6.5+4 Gives 9.45Hz Perfect compliance! So , we can see that 2m bronze is a hi compliant cart, not the best match for Med tonearm like Technics. It needs a light arm like the Project. Thanks again Ian , love your blog.
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 6 лет назад
I have tested the carts with the SME V and the lightweight Magnesium Technics GAE (not the Technics aluminium with the Mk2/3/4/5) tonearm with the lightweight magnesium Jelco headshell. I am :-D happy that you know that the listed carts from Japan (AT, Nagaoka), Europe (Goldring, Ortofon), U.S. (Grado) have different compliance settings measured and listed, and also at different 10Hz vs 100Hz as well. The Resonant Frequency = 159 divided by {square root of [(tonearm effective mass+cartridge body mass) × dynamic compliance} . This formula is derived from:Mass = 1,000,000 divided by {frequency)² x (2π)² x Compliance }MP-150 like most other Japanese carts, are measured at 100Hz, and the value would be multiplied by 1.5-2.0 to get at the dynamic compliance at 10Hz. This is a general but agreed guide. American ones get to be halved. Key issues are:1. Most cartridge manufacturers producing modern cartridges will know who are the major players : Rega and Pro-Ject, Technics SL tonearms. They will thus aim for a dynamic compliance for their cartridges that will get them "in the zone" when matched to a 6g tonearm to a 15g tonearm, in the zone of 8 to 14Hz. 2. Theoretical Compliance matching is :-D but a small matter in the overall performance of a cartridge. Let us say that a cartridge is matched very well with a tonearm to effect in a Resonant Frequency of 9-11Hz, but yet the tonearm bearings are poor: - case 1: rough, not smooth action of tonearm, resulting in compliance issues being thrown out of the window, as a tonearm with unsmooth action, is likened to a heavy ponderous tonearm with "high effective mass", - case 2: poor bearings tolerance that result in FREE PLAY, and that means SLIPPAGE of the stylus in 10-20microns across and within the groove modulations, which again, throw compliance out of the window, as such free play and slippage results in loss of fidelity and is worse than any compliance mismatch issues. Apologies but Pro-Ject tonearms are poor in built. I apologize for speaking this out. Cartridge manufacturers are smart enough to know that most of the times, these carts will be used on a Rega arm, a ProJect arm, a Technics arm+headshell (the Jelco HS-25 headshell is Magnesium of only 11.5g), a SME arm, etc and they will be wise to do well and design their carts to have compliance settings to hence allow the Resonant Frequency to fall within the 8Hz to 14Hz zone. Compliance theoretical matching is also thrown out of the window, or make up a small factor in the SOUND QUALITY, because many, many, many, many other bigger factors will affect the sound more. One can have a tight tolerance well made tonearm with super smooth bearings and zero free play, versus another brand's tonearm with the same effective mass but with unsmooth bearings and lots of unnecessary free play... these compliance-tonearm mass settings thus become a small factor. In the great scheme of things, unipivot vs gimballed vs limear tracking, even more physics come into play, antiskating?for the three different types of arms?, different antiskating mechanisms employed by the tonearm manufacturer?... 👋😄lots of factors. Thus, use our ears. The 2M Bronze matched to the SME V tonearm on the Avid Sequel turntable continues to do poorly compared to the MP-150, Grado Reference Platinum 2, and MP-200. And we have to be aware, that both the SME V and the Technics GAE tonearm are of the extremely resonance absorbing- Magnesium material :-D !!! *Many of my friends and i possess all the calculative, nitty-gritty and thesis-like papers from different magazines talking about compliance* (i have all those copies too printed through the ages) and eventually we find ourselves with: using our ears. Theoretical compliance matching is one of many factors dictating sound quality of a cartridge. The ultimate aim and commitments i have for doing these reviews, is to portray the professionalism vinyl audiophiles can be, inviting the newer vinyl adopters who have affordable to medium budgets to gently get into the fray and we continue to lay out the bridge for them, and not to scare them upfront with technicalities of calculations, electronics. I really thank you for writing in in detail to me Gil :-D!!!! Thank you yet again for catching up. I honour your kind time :-D!!! Warmest Regards, ~ ian.

On a side note, I have read and heard that the Nagaoka cartridges are pretty difficult to setup due to the recessed stylus. How are your thoughts on that and how many hours of burn in did the cartridges receive. I gave my Bronze more than 40 hours before it sounded acceptable.

Mark Brewer Dear Buddy Mark👋😄🎵🎶thank you for catching up! My local chief Grado retailer is having a lot of issues with the Series2 cartridges: 1. the first batch that came....all the series2 carts have ZERO signal on one channel, and he had to return all of them, ALL of them. 2. The second batch, which i have just gone to his store to pick up the Black2, came with a kinked cantilever which i realised after i ahd unboxed it. I had to make another return trip to get it exchanged. Even so, while getting my 1for1 exchange, we realised that all the other three carts in his store have kinked cantilevers, of varying degrees. In the end, i picked the only one specimen with the least kinked cantilever. All these will be shown on the next video🤗. Thank you for your asking. At present, i cannot recommend the Grado series2 carts. At present. Too many unacceptable quality issues that retailer and customers are facing. Warmest Regards my friend 💪😄

The biggest flaw in this comparision is judging unburnt very new out of the box catridges. 2M bronze is one of the top class cartridges, but you need to give some burn-in time before it actually starts giving more juice. All 2M catridges sound crap in the beginning and later you know why they are expensive. In my opinion it looks like MP-200 is already burnt before it was testing in this video.

Dear Buddy, thank you for catching up! All these cartridges I had bought were runned-in for 80-120hours before auditioning. I had bought the 2M Bronze and 2M Black from one of my top audio retailer in Singapore💪😄✌!!... : Desmond and David from AudioNote/hifi.com.sg at level3 of Adelphi Mall, 1 Coleman Street. I had also bought my Leben cs300xs and audionote an-k 😄from them, and recommended my friends to get their Dr Feickert turntables from them too. I had bought all the cartridges with my own hard-earned and saved money, and my ideal and wish is for all carts to perform superbly🤗so that I can have many carts to play with and AT RANDOM😄😃🌞!!!!! The Bronze is a good cart, just like the AT 540, Goldring 1006, etc, but only in the face of other strong competition products at the same price, relativity sets in. I, too, liked my previous Rega Fono Mk2 four years ago, but after I heard the Schiit Mani which a kind friend loaned to me, the form books are out of the window, and I have to eat humble pie. 👋😄I went to buy my own Mani from schiit.com shortly after that🤸‍♂️😅🎶🎵🎶🎶 Warmest Regards Buddy Dilip and may you have a restful and lovely Sunday ahead with your family and friends🌈🌞🏕🏡

Dear Tzahy :-D, thank you for your friendship and kindness. I have tested the carts with the SME V and the lightweight Magnesium Technics GAE tonearm with the lightweight magnesium Jelco headshell. Thus, use our ears. But in any case, the resonant frequency of the 2M Bronze matched to the SME V tonearm on the Avid Sequel turntable and the light-weight Jelco HS-25 headshell with the medium Magnesium mass tonearm are calculated and are within range of 8 to 14Hz. And we have to be aware, that both the SME V and the Technics GAE tonearm are of the low resonant Magnesium material :-D !!! Many of my friends and i possess all the calculative, nitty-gritty and thesis-like papers from different magazines talking about compliance(i have all those copies too printed through the ages) and eventually we find ourselves with: using our ears. Theoretical compliance matching is one of many factors dictating sound quality of a cartridge. I totally understand your concerns. I have them too. Most new vinyl users would be recommended by us experienced vinyl users to get a quality Rega Planar1, Planar3, Technics deck, and perhaps now even the MoFi StudioDeck well designed by Allen Perkins, and that VPi Cliffwood. Most of the new ones need to be bedded in with affordable and quality gear, and be seamlessly eased into our fraternity and community, away from the Crosleys. Also, my hifi retailers Mark, Brandon, Danny, Richard, all enlightened me on the fact that 99% of all their vinyl records buying customers, are not audiophiles and they want something simple and quick to go, and they do not spend above $1000 for turntable+cart+phonopreamp. Most phono preamps are rated at impedance of 47kOhms for MM carts. These affordable phono preamps have no more adjustability for load impedance. Knowing these facts and demographics and their preferences and buying behavious greatly shapes the plan I see I need to do to help bed them in: the new vinyl users, and the experienced ones who just want affordable to midrange effective gear. Best Regards Tzahy!!! :-D I thank you for catching up. ~ ian. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Helvetica Neue'; color: #454545} p.p2 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Helvetica Neue'; color: #454545; min-height: 14.0px}
