Although the OM30 was released 23 years before the 2M Bronze, the two cartridges are almost identical. The stylus assembly components are the same and the main dfference in the cartridge body is the coil design. The 2M Bronze has silver plated copper coils while the OM30 has standard copper wire coils. Otherwise, the specifications are very similar. Remove the mounting shells that surround the cartridge bodies and it will be difficult to tell them apart.

Great work! Thank you so much! I like the 2M Bronze here. The 2M has better overall tonal balance in this recording. Sennheiser HD 600 headphones.

Brilliant work! Fascinating that 2M Bronze has silver-copper coils and OM30 has old-school copper and rubber suspension; I wonder why? OM30's shape fits some headshells that 2M is too bulky for. I suspected that the lighter cartridge body would have matched the Yamaha tonearm better, but no. 2M Bronze sounded clearly superior to me. Well done. (Oh, PS. the frequency response of 2M Bronze can't be greater than its frequency range. Something got lost in translation there)

There is even more important deference between OM 30 and 2M Bronze generators: the laminated slit poles of 2M, which OM 30 did not have. Although there was its SuperOM premium version with slit poles, if comparing basic OM vs 2M line there is quite substantial improvement in 2M in terms of the channel separation and details. 2M line as well as SuperOM line draws more detailed picture with more air in it. And then there is even the oldest Fine Line cartridge in the Ortofon inventory, the VMS -30. Rarely seen now, once also rebranded as Empire GT1000 MkII. I have it and I also have 2M Bronze. In my opinion the old VMS 30 is much better cartridge in all aspects, except original stylus availability. It outruns not only 2M Bronze but also Shibata tipped 2M Black in smothering up sibilant vocals, which is really something!

i think the music flows better with OM30. Ιt also has better focus sound. Thanks for the nice video & wonderful music.👍

Even with the same stylus and cantilever, the 2M Bronze sounds more clear. Ortofon apparently upgraded the suspension and generator.

For years, I ran an OM30 (purch'd 1985) on a Dual CS-505-1. Pre-amp : modded Dynaco Super-PAS all-tube. Also used LAST products for vinyl and stylus. The Dual had a low-mass arm, and the OM30 on the Dual LM arm tracked everything nicely at only 1.5 g. No experience with 2M Bronze; this video seems to indicate it is slight improvement. But I think Ortofon has simply been tweaking their older models. Evolution, not revolution.

Mmh, the OM30 has an effective moving mass of 0.3mg, while if I'm not mistaken the whole 2M line styli have an effective mm of 0.5mg. But the Bronze body has superior pole design with respect to the Super OM body, so maybe the best possible combination would be putting the OM30 stylus in the Bronze body?

Is the stylus new on the OM 30 or is it still the original one?

Would the bronze styrus if you cut the plastic away fit in the om30 as a replacement?

I don't see why not but if it was me I'd make a horrible mess of it! The other way round is easy - I've swapped out my NOS original OM30 stylus on a 2M body (obvs adjusting tracking force) and it sounded pretty much identical to when it was attached to the super OM body. Both the super OM and 2M engines use 'split pole' technology and I'd hazard a guess that they're pretty much identical. Fun fact you can push the square metal prong backwards through the body and reuse it vice versa in either OM or 2M bodies.

I must have a tin ear because I think the OM30 sounds a tad better. The Bronze sounds a little more smeared? congealed? It also looks like the bias for the Bronze needs to be increased.

From what I've read the actual stylus for these two carts are the same, Ortofon Fine Line. I don't think they make (or buy) two different versions of the same stylus tip. That wouldn't make sense from a business perspective. The generator for these two carts are obviously different and the 2M Bronze could have slightly better channel separation. I wouldn't take that for granted though until I see some measurements. A slight difference in channel separation will also be hard to make out with most music as long as both carts are good enough (in the most important frequency ranges). Is this level matched? People often prefer the device that is louder. I also seen some tests that show that 2M put out more volt than they are speced for. More than 7mV for the Black for instance, while the spec says 5.5mV. Anyways, if the the phono pre-amp can take it without clipping the slightly louder cart will sound better to most people.

2M Bronze won this one but I prefer the Ortofon Super OM 40 over the 2M Black. Would be interesting to compare 2M Bronze against Ortofon Super OM 40.

I think there could be issues using an original 40 year old stylus, even if new old stock.

While the OM was introduced in 1984 and the 2M in 2007, these models are still in production. The Oreo cookie was introduced in 1912 but that doesn't mean you are buying 111 year old cookies.
