When heard over a true analogue chain (without being digitized) and over a two speaker stereo system, the results are even more TELLING, OBVIOUS and ACCURATE. The songs hereby presented are digitized, and include the many flaws of digital: introducing into the music: time smear, phase shift, pre-ring, ring, post-ring. Furthermore, the digitized file is further "simplified" (to use very kind terms) by RU-vid processing.
Dearest Friends, here we are again, this time with the Quintet Blue vs Hana EL shoot-out and reviews :-D !!! No holds barred. Bought five weeks ago and hereby presented wholely.
Yes, loading is adjusted and listened to, auditioned, according to manufacturers' specs: more than 400ohms for the Hana EL and more than 20ohms for the Quintet Blue :-D. 500ohms is optimum for the Hana EL, and 50/100 for the Quintet Blue during the auditions during these reviews and shoot-out.
Have a good Sunday my dearest friends :-D

Dearest Friends and Buddies,
I am Ian and I reside in sunny Singapore. I love our Vinyl Community and Vinyl Music. Vinyl analogue playback is utterly blissful, and I want for fellow friends and buddies to engage in vinyl music for many, many years in their life, each vinyl buddy through their school life, through the hustle and bustle of daily work, accompany them through precious hours at home with their family members or in their hostel with their friends. Vinyl music is blissful, free of time smear, phase shift, pre-ring and post-ring that plagues digital playback. Vinyl buddies and friends can all attest to that. It is not warm in the “bassy warm” sense, it is not soothing in the sense that “everything gets smoothed out”. It is because it is analogue, very detailed, calm, invigorating, enthralling, dynamic, refreshing. In a word, blissful. Utterly :-D
I want for all to get the very equipment that will get us there. These equipment, I firmly believe, are present, and existent, even at affordable price points!..and I started off in Dec 2015 hunting out for them, selling off my own Rega RP6 (which my wife and I loved) to fund the first batch of cartridges for review: the 5 cartridges in Group A ($70-$80), and the 7 cartridges in Group B ($90-$130). Subsequently I told myself to set aside $500-$1000 per month from my monthly salary to buy equipment to review. My own money. Quite a hefty sum monthly, significant to me, as I am a salaried man. I know this is crazy. But I believe in every field, there are people who have to make the sacrifice to pursue their love for the greater good, and to serve, the community of friends. I have also downsized my car in mid-2017 so as to commit these monies to fund these projects. I totally, rigorously, and kindly reject all forms of donations, be they from friends, from retailers, from manufacturers. This is a hobby, and my teachers and advisors in life have advised me that to bring balance to life, and to be wholesome, one will engage in a livelihood (daily job or business) that earns the monies, and one will also simultaneously engage in a hobby/service in life that is non-competitive, non-monetarily-remunerative. My wife totally understands what I want to do for the community and she so kindly supports my decision and efforts. Vinyl music is a lovely hobby I hold dearly. Friends and buddies are my ultimate responsibility and my love. I want the very best for them, and to provide totally honest reviews. Moles exist in hifi forums, moles also exist from benefactors who donate. I do not want to remotely encounter any moles masquerading as benefactors donating to my cause, only to find out sooner or later that such donations were/are from certain manufacturers or retailers. Everybody will do things differently. I want to maintain my status as a common-folk, aspire always to adopt the Shokunin spirit: of spending the utmost diligent care, through unhurried work, never caring for returns, in perfecting their work for the community. The personal satisfaction of getting to the very best equipment in each price class to help all my lovely buddies and friends is, the only thing, in store for me :-D We toast to the joy and bliss of vinyl analogue music. Vinyl Music deserves our love and attention. Our listening. Our care.
We toast to the lively spirit of :-D !!:
“Everybody will be dancing and doing it right"
Let's go, buddies and friends!!!
Warmest Regards,
~ ian :-D

Oh my goodness, Ian. You're the bringer of truth. I've never been a fan of MC cartridges, so your findings here are of no surprise. Yes, they can sound good, but the investment needed boarders on the ridiculous, and simply just not necessary. MM cartridges such as the Nagaoka MP500 (once run in) can take on with ease MC cartridges costing several times more, and without the need of a grossly overpriced phono preamp. Even the Schiit Mani can do it justice. Of course the Hi-Fi press will completely disagree (with a few exceptions) and we know why don't we. Ian, You're bringing back the real joy of audiophilia 👍

Vinyl users will all win against the hype and marketing ploys. We really want affordability, truth and to enjoy our beloved, treasured and lovely vinyl records. Matthew Taylor Well you said it yourself "overpriced" ... Some MC cartridges are excellent, but the investment needed to get the best from them seems excessive. We've all done it. When the Hi-Fi bug bites you can spend silly amounts of money. I love Ian's philosophical outlook. He's discovered musicality and master levels of resolution without the need to sell Granny. And he's not bought by "hype" which is refreshing to say the least. 👍

Lol. Clearly, your lack of experience/expertise shows here; the Ortfon Quintet 'Blue' is by far and away the more natural/neutral, layered performer. It's one thing to prefer one (cartidge) over the other, yet quite another to make sweeping generalizations/statements regarding "superiority" WITHOUT considering the table, arm, phono preamp/step-up transformer and cabling. Equally important is for readers to take into consideration the level of experience/understanding (what to listen for) of the "reviewer". Having interest (in Hi-Fi) extra time, money a video camera -and clearly passion- is a great start. Makingsuch sweeping (erroneous) observations are best reserved for those with far greater experience/listening skill. Bear this in mind moving forward, and 'tone-it-down' (literally !) a tad. Perhaps readers should know that Ortofon has the experience, expertise -and resources- of all those other 'brands' combined -or close to. Srange then, how such a long-standing, well respected manufacturer offers a "lesser" product than some of those brands/models that make their 'needles' in a garage (compared to Ortofon manufacturing quality/sophistication) ! pj

Thank you for your feedback. I was in research for the Ortofon Quintet Blue, but after watching your video, I'll move to something else. As I see it, the problem about MCs lies, also, to the lower Compliance , which is a key factor for heavier tonearms. For example, my Thorens td-165 Special has the TP-11 (16,5gr). It's considered a 'medium to heavy' tonearm. I cannot find a decent MM to match it, and constraint the RF between 8-12. All MMs have higher compliance factors. Out of despair, I installed an AT-95e some years ago and I listen like that.. Now, I started again searching for a better cartridge and I am/was between: 1) Denon dl-110 2) Denon dl-103r 3) Ortofon MC-03 turbo 4) Ortofon Quintet Blue (not anymore) 5) some Goldring Outside of these, I really get headaches from chaotic searching and reading, you see? Thank you again

I really appreciate your careful, bandwidth-based assessments of carts and your advocacy for carts like the Grado Red and the Nagaoka 150--given the kind of systems I have, which are Sansui amps etc. (I also use older tube amps) and KLH or EV speakers from the 1960s, these carts sound *so good* it is hard to better them. I am especially a fan of the Grado Red . . .

Nagaoka cartridges are my all time favourites, I always seem to go back to using them having tried many other manufacturers cartridges. Their sound is so natural and believable, effortless really without any of the HiFi gimmicks that other manufacturers offer.

Ian - Sorry for not commenting the day of this upload but this is a fantastic review and I agree, sometimes, the MC transition doesn't always provide the expected sonic gains over MM. The more I learn about Ortofon, the more disappointed I become in their entry level products. I was happy with my 2M Black but it makes me wonder in retrospect if I couldn't have started out with a cart that was sonic-ally superior and at half the price. The Hana is an exceptional cart and less than the price of a 2M Black. Can't wait for the next video. The Hana paired with Mani sound like a good entry point into MC sounding carts. Thanks for the kind shout out by the way. As an aside, do you know of anyone that has had their Dynavector retipped? I know I probably have plenty of hours left but I am just thinking about things down the road. I am trying to find some time to switch to the Nagaoka for awhile. If I can find a good half day off, with no family around, I am going to switch out. With a cart swap, I prefer to have absolutely no distractions to interrupt the process ;)

Dearest Buddy Paul, :-D The reason for my reticence, is, because, after reading your comment, I have been ruminating over buying a Technics SL1200Mk3D for you, from hifido!!!! Coz I thought that: "if I can get one Mk3D for Paul, he CAN spend less time running his xx2Mk2 to the ground, and playing his multiple vinyl records casually and yet getting superb musical high quality sound from the MP-110 and Mani I gave him :-D "... I have two xx2Mk2s.... I bought an extra one 2 years ago, as a standby. Both are played regularly, but of course not as much as my MP150, MP110, GR1006, Grado Green and Grado Red :-D !!! Buddy, I read your words ".......I was happy with my 2M Black but it makes me wonder in retrospect if I couldn't have started out with a cart that was sonic-ally superior and at half the price.... " ...thank you for sharing your insight and feelings. In the meantime, Brother, have a good Friday ahead followed by a another joyous weekend with your family. Warmest Regards, ~ ian

No worries at all Ian on the delayed response and really, you don't have to go out of your way to swing the Technics SL1200Mk3D?! Thank you so much for thinking of me though as you are the most thoughtful of all people here in the VC! The thought of being able to swap cartridges immediately is definitely appealing. As an aside, I don't know how you can keep up with it all! I am happy sometimes if I can get to all my comments inside of week and lately with work, I can't keep up with all of the people I am subscribed too. Your videos are a must watch though! If you need to delay your response on my comments, no worries at all. I just want to let you know you will always have my support.

Hi Ian. I was wondering if you had come across this post www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/review-and-measurements-of-schiit-mani-phono-stage.8052/page-3 which highlights an issue with the Mani paired with a low output MC such as the Ortofon Quintet series. I’m now powering the Mani with an iFi iPower X 15v dc adapter rather than the Schiit supplied 16v ac power adapter and, to my ears there is a real improvement in soundstage and instrument detail with the dc power supply. Perhaps worth a look and maybe a future video. Stay safe and well and thank you for all of your interesting and informative content. Kind regards, Ian (also an Ian).

Another in-depth and honest review, as is your trademark Ian. 👍 It's a bit disappointing hearing these news about the Quintet. I was under the illusion that Ortofon had a more consistent quality throughout their cartridge range. If i may, i would like to ask you how do you capture the audio samples that you put in your videos? Is it a direct connection between phono preamp and soundcard? On some of your other videos they sound as if you captured the audio from your speakers. Keep doing what you do, Ian. Amazing work!

MrVinylObsessive Dear Buddy👋😄!! Great to see you again! How are you? Often times it is that honest competitors have really done better, or much better 💪🎶✌. Such raised bars of standards inevitably make us consumers wonder why we should spend our hard-earned monies on suboptimal products. You are sharp. I have just started (from this video onwards) using the Schiit Jil as a Analog-to-Digital Converter: directly linking from the phonostage to the Schiit Jil and then, to the computer. I have been very fortunate to have one and i had also followed up to help a few fellow Singaporeans acquire theirs from the U.K. as Technics has no representation in the whole of Asia, and is only sold in Europe, U.S. and the U.K. It is a very nice deck, detailed, clean and clear, and very fluid. It is expensive in my eyes😅 as i am only a salaried employee in my doctoring job. Best Regards for your vinyl playing years to come💪😄....analogue bliss. See you Buddy.

Way to go Ian, that Avid phono stage is magnificent, so many control options. What is the maximum gain level of the Avid phono stage and are you using rca or balanced input/outputs. How much gain do you use with the Dynavector XXII as well as the two tested cartridges. The reason I asked is although I love my phono stage which is a Audio Research PH8 it has a fixed gain at 58db, which limits me regarding moving magnet and very low output moving coil and would make the Dynavector XXII, at .28mv unplayable without a step-up transformer, which the Audio Research is very hard to mate with, but the PH8 has extremely low noise floor when mated well with. I'm currently using a Dynavector 10X5 at 2.5mv and was curious if the Hana EL and Ortofon Blue were being used at 60db or less and if so did you find the sound pressure level satisfactory. Good review and the Hana EL seems like a surprise and a good cartridge. I looked at some reviews on the Hana SL, which seemed promising. I have also heard and believe that just going moving coil for the sake of it doesn't mean that you will beat moving magnet. Another two good low price moving coil cartridges would be the Denon DL-110 now at $349.00 (1.6mv) and Denon DL-301MKII (.4mv) at $399.00 both which I own, but the DL301MKII hasn't been used since going to the Audio Research PH8. Thanks for doing this as always and your collection of cartridges is growing my friend. We appreciate all of your hard work in doing these videos and your passion!!!

Dear Buddy Szidon!! A fellow learned and experienced buddy called Chris Bishop has just commented here as well :-D and he has always been around for the past two years, giving supremely good and spot-on insights. Very brilliant guy he is.... :-D a great friend and resource!... Thank you for writing and your kindest time on your Sunday. I would love to catch up with you for coffee one day! Btw the Pulsare2 has adjustable gain at 40, 50, 60 and 70dB, and I am using 70dB for the MC low output cartridges :-D... the pulsare2 is really an amazing phonostage. Always make my jaws drop and eyes go big, and I go stoned and sat fixated in amazement and shock every time I listen to the xx2mk2 with it. Even one song just now, East of the Village by Hank Mobley on MusicMattersJazz, made me supremely satiated. Just one song. Amazing... :-D. I hope to do more for all of us. Then again, there are many kit out there quadruple the price of my xx2mk2 and pulsare2 which I have not listened to. :-D . We shall all be happy with what we have!!! Keep it up with your DL110 and 301Mk2!!! Yours, ~ian

These are fun videos, and somewhat informative. One big gripe! Please play some vintage recordings. Squeaky clean audiophile vinyl is much easier to reproduce than vinyl from the 60s. In other words, some viewers are more inclined to collect LPs rather than audio gear. Saying it in another way: Please put the tires on a real road.

Thank you so much for putting so much effort and money into this, it's very helpful and a great gift to us musiclovers! Although I prefer digital hi rez-sources for the ease of use and sound quality, I would like to create a cheap analog setup for my vinyl collection. But I have a question, let's say I get a mani with the mp110 are there any audible differences between turntables? cheap and expensive ones, would i be alright with the cheapest project one ~200 euros? I would imagine that as long as it can keep a good speed rate and aren't any outside vibrations were i place it, there would be no audible differences even with the most expensive one. but that's just my speculation...

Brother, the Mani and the MP110 are must buys. Absolutely BRILLIANT and way, way, way over the top for performance-vs-price. We are lucky to have these two super servants laying on the crazy foundation for our vinyl playback :-D... Brother, I may suggest you to get a second hand RP1 for 200Euros, and get the adjustable spacer to have the tonearm height raised by 6-8mm for the MP110 to get into the ideal SRA. You may also leave out the MP110, and use that cash to add to that 200Euros and get a Rega Planar 1 to match with the Mani, so as to strictly keep to the amount of financial outlay. :-D Have fun in any case my friend!! It's always a pleasure to watch your videos. You remind me every single time how much fun this subject can be. And yes, my SL-1210 is still fantastic. Only the lack of 78rpm might be a reason one day to get the new 1200GR, but €1500 is a steep investment for this. But the MP500 will definitely stay. And I am still amazed how well the MP110 already performs. Before I got the Technics, I once had a Pro-ject with an Ortofon VinylMaster Red. It had a heavy frequency lift at about 6 KHz, VinylDisaster would have been a better name for it. ;)

MC to me seems to start to shine around the U$/€1000 mark yet needs a very well picked phono amp. You're a guru on this matter, I just read and watch reviews like yours :) Ending with dinner: Chinese take away, it is actually more a Chinese/Indonesian blend of things like saté and babi pagang etc.. You know what is funny? When listening to CD (1990s-2014 ish) I often "complained" about the bad sound quality of FZ recordings. With records (well mastered) they sound amazing! The hifi was a bit more modest to be fair but anyways. Even the older (Roxy & Elsewhere and NY) are such a joy to listen. Bernie Grundman masterings I buy blind. Paul does a great job comparing mastering engineers and record plants. You both compliment eachother very nicely.

Never had a moving coil setup and with your reviews of cartridges that are for us not rich working class folks who can't drop 500 or more dollars for a stylus I don't think I will ever make that switch I think its funny how one can spend a fortune on audio gear and still not achieve better performance than a cart that's under 200 dollars can do seems to me anything with the word audiophile just means an extra several hundred bucks

Exactly!!!Brother :-D !!!!!! An MP-110 and MP-150 paired with a Schiit Mani, will give much better performance than a lot of MC carts and their accompanying MC phonostages!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes, it is "funny how one can spend a fortune on audio gear and still not achieve better performance than a cart that's under 200 dollars can do"!!!

Wow! The expensive Moving Coil cartridges have to fight it out! I always knew the Moving Magnet was the less-expensive tech, but, as you pointed out in the video, it's a proven system that delivers top-quality at a good price. I'll stick to my MM cartridge for a good long time and save some $$, too! Thanks for another excellent video!

Good to see you Ian and what a great review, although not for the Quintet Blue. I just listened to the files on Analogue Planet between the Hana SL and Quintet Black and thought the Hana was a more interesting and honest sounding cartridge, I now look forward to part 2. By the way, I'm currently breaking in my Shelter 9000 :)
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 6 лет назад
Ooooh Buddy with the Acutus SP and P3 :-D!!! Indeed a short three weeks and now your Shelter 9000 has touched down in your home!! Way to go man! The Hana SL is cheaper than the Quintet Black, and it would be good for consumers if the cheaper product trumps the more expensive one! Update me again of your Shelter 9000 buddy! Warm Regards on a lovely Sunday with the double-clamp swivelling before you! :-D . ~ ian.

I've sold the P3 as it just didn't have enough low end weight for my tastes, I still think its a superb entry level table though. The Shelter replaces the Lyra Delos and its an analytical sounding cartridge for sure. A little less extended in terms of treble and bass than the Delos but we are talking a small amount. Dynamically its better in both micro and macro than the Delos though and the midrange is also more refined, I'm honestly loving it. If theres some way of sending a hi rez audio file you could hear it for yourself !

Ian, thank you for this review....didn't realize it was so old but that's OK, the informationis still helpful to me. I was considering going to MC as an upgrade thinking it would be a surefire improvement, but not so much now. Currently using a Gold ring 1006 and schiit Mani after your reviews. I am using a vintage Dual 1249 TT, PrimaLuna Dialogue Premium Integrated Amp and vintage Infinity RS3b speakers. Would like your thoughts on next upgrade.

HiViNyws channel High five!!! Don't have the ebony wood headshell yet. Probably in 2 weeks time. Bought the Uwe version, he makes also bodies for the DL103. At the moment a worn DL103 is getting a new needle. Will be fun to try it out with the new headshell. /Paul

Hi Ian, great review as always, thanks. A question for you, could this poor performance of this cartridge be an issue because of the compliance mismatch between your tonearm and the cartridge- hence an issue with the resonance? What is your opinion on the importance of tonearm and cartridge matching in terms of compliance and resonance frequency?
@HiViNywschannel
@HiViNywschannel 6 лет назад
Dear Brother, great to see you again :-D !!! Sorry to have missed out this post. The dynamic compliance of this QB is 15um/mN, and the cartridge body weight is 9g, if you calculate these figures with the SME V tonearm and lighter-weight Technics GAE magnesium tonearm with lightweight Jelco HS-25 and Yamamoto HS-3, HS-4 headshells which I use during testing, the resonant frequency is within 8-Hz 14Hz. Not an issue with compliance.
@torchbox
@torchbox 6 лет назад
HiViNyws channel - Thanks Ian. That’s exactly what I was expecting so we know for sure it’s the characteristics of the cartridge itself and not a mismatch. 🙏🏽

Love your energy and enthusiasm. But it makes me sad to see people turning away from the Quintet Blue after watching this review. I have the Ortofon Quintet Blue and i love it. Just to put things in to perspective: It was awarded a full five stars from What HiFi: www.whathifi.com/reviews/ortofon-quintet-blue Verdict from What HiFi: "Given a suitably capable system we have no doubt the Ortofon Quintet Blue will impress. It’s a well-balanced design with no obvious weaknesses. If you’ve always hankered after a moving coil cartridge we can’t think of an alternative we prefer." In the end you say Grado Red and Green, among others, are better performers than Quintet Blue. I have Grado Green. I like the famous grado hot sound, but it's nowhere near the airiness and detail of Quintet Blue. I'd say Ortofon Quintet Blue easily wins over Grado Green if we talk Hi Fi.

I did have an idea. For those viewers on a budget an evaluation of 110/Mani v Hana EL/Puresound sut could be special. As you know 0.3mv is unconvincing with lower priced solid state. So why not compare using an affordable switchable load sut ? I would love to know which of these options comes out on top.
