@@zoltan2728 hey! I tested the version that came before the SF and LF versions. So I think it would have been named LU2-4. The module didn't have a specific name however.
Great review!! I bought my ORTUR pro just a few days ago with the intentions to build a enclosure box with ventilation, I was able to put it together with the book it came without any issues. I have never owned or operated a laser before and found this laser was amazingly easy to operate. I would love to own a high end laser but I buy within my budget and this laser fit in my budget great. If ORTUR had sent me a free laser to test and review not knowing anything about laser’s, well I have to say I would be happier then a tornado in a trailer park. This laser with a few DIY upgrades will do just fine for a garage hobbyist. Definitely worth the money and a foot in the door to the laser world. Again I enjoyed your video.
That's great to hear! And I agree that this laser is a great way to get the foot in the door. I thought I might make an enclosure, but for now, I see myself mainly cutting wood, which I don't mind the smell of at all. So I'll probably wait until I'm fed up with all the smoke ;)
Travel Camp 365 these are great little lasers and a lot of fun to mess with. Since you are new to lasers my advice would be to buy LightBurn (well worth the money at $60). And second thing would be to subscribe to Louisiana Hobby Guy. He has really good tutorials on LightBurn. He will help cut your learning curve by quite a bit so you can get right to doing the fun stuff. I hope you will enjoy your laser as much as I have.
I have had my master 2 non pro for 8 months. I use it to ingrave almost daily. I wish I would have purchased the pro series. But I have been overwhelmingly happy with the performance of the machine. Thank you for doing this review
Great review! You brought up many factors I would not have known about. I think I may go with this machine as opposed to a CO2 laser. Based on my limited research on CO2 lasers it looks like I can spend equal money to the LM2 Pro and get half the working space, or get the same working space for about 5 times the cost! Being a retired guy, I will start by saving the money and then wait impatiently for the thing to finish.
actually green glasses are also correct if they are for the correct wavelength. And we assume with the enclosed certificate they are within compliance. You may notice that all, or mostly all laser machines, regardless of the color of laser lens on the bottom of the laser, come with green glasses.
Yes and that’s exactly the problem. Almost all blue lasers come with green glasses, yet they have to be orange. That’s what I was trying to explain. The glasses simply cannot be green if they are supposed to block blue light. They have to be orange/red or pitch black. Nothing else. As I said: it’s basic color science ;)

I like your review, however I cannot see how you did wrong with the cutting of plywood. I use one of the other Ortur lasers and I have no issues cutting 3mm or 5mm plywood. I only need 1 or 2 cuts, without burning too much the wood. I agree with you as regards the goggles etc. In any case still loved the review, thanks again.

I wish I could, but I used measurements which were given to me confidentially, which makes it so that I’m pretty sure that I can’t share it :/ The overall shape is very easy to replicate however. It’s just a twisted hexagon.

Request: please make a video on the NEJE Master 2S Max with the NEJE A40640 laser module. There's not much credible content on RU-vid on this system and it's relatively new. There spec sheet is almost dreamy and there kerf is square as per their claim. I really want ro get a laser engraver/cutter and I wanna start with diode because it is magnitudes easier than operating a CO2 laser.
The short of it : great laser head that allow at last decent cutting power for a diode laser, but suboptimal platform with too much backlash, lacks rigidity, dual independant motors on the x axis. Ideally, you'd want the Orthur platform, the Atom X7 standalone controls and the Neje laser diode. Either build a platform on your own like a coreXY one (there are many discord groips to help) or upgrade an Orthur, though it has sigmificant cost. The diode laser vs CO2 laser is not really a valid comparison because they serve really different needs. A K40 (really a 34 to 36w at most) is a huge and bulky machine for a really small cutting area and it needs air assist and a cooling solution (even a chiller once you use 80+W lasers). If you want a bigger cutting area and a decent power you're into 80 to 100W CO2 lasers that cost 3500 to 7000 ($ or € is around ghe same with VAT and import taxes) but you now have a production machine not a hobby one. A diode laser thanks to that 40640 head is a light setting, best fit for engraving large areas and that can nonetheless cut cheaply up to 6mm mdf with a bit of time, care and air assist. It's an awesome news for hobbyists. You just have to accept its limitations.
I have this machine and for a year now tried and tried to cut 3 mil chip wood but no joy, no matter how I focus or how many passes I do, it just eventually burnes the wood.
Thanks for the vid. Was trying to figure this out on Ortur's web site...it looks like the Ortur Laser Master 2 Pro S2 machine with the LU2-4 SF module does not come with air assist whereas the machine with the LU2-4 SF module does come with air assist. Is that correct? If so, I'm wondering why the SF module does not come with one. I guess I could rig one up using something like a fish tank air compressor I suppose. Just curious if you know. Thanks.
Back when I got it, there was only one version, but from what I can tell, what they call “air assist” is not actually air assist. They just use a duct to guide the air from the cooling fan into the cut. It’s probably better than nothing, but I would still go with the fish tank compressor if I was serious about cutting. The LU2-4LF (long focus) comes with an air assist nozzle and tubing; you have to provide your own air source. The LF module is way better for cutting; two passes for 3mm ply. The SF (short focus) module is primarily for etching, which is why your cuts took so long.
You're looking at the Ortur LM2 Pro S2 machine, which seems to have these two different options. I only reviewed the original LM2 Pro. However it looks like the laser module that I've got closely resembles the long focus module from the S2, with the only difference being that mine doesn't have that fancy air assist nozzle.
Thanks for the review. I couldn't find any information on the maximum height for the pieces you want to engrave (not cut). Do you have any precise data on this?
Im but sure I fully understand the question unfortunately. You could just prop the laser up on two bookcases to fit a 2 meter high object underneath, if that’s what you mean or you could set it atop a plane and engrave that 😅

Just draw lines with the preferred length and spacing in your vector program of choice and use that to engrave. Or do what I did, which was to draw the lines straight into lightburn. Use the copy/paste or the grid function if you want to keep your sanity 👍
Yeah in comparison it’s very fast. What made it such a chore was that I can leave my printers alone but I didn’t want to leave the laser alone. Also, without a housing I had to keep the glasses on for 2 hours. That’s what made it annoying.
You try and take away from the machine because it's speed, which has more do with your expectations than the machine. It only has so much power (which is known by the buyer before ordering) If you want something faster you have spend more money. For its price range it does everything that you can expect of it. And does it well. Your lack of knowledge of what a laser of this power can do doesn't take away from the machine at all, since that information if all over the web and on RU-vid. Also if the glasses were so unsafe why did you continue to use them.
Hey Terry, I realise that I didn't explain myself properly, so let me try and rectify it: First of all, I'm blown away by the power of this module. Last time I used a diode laser was 10 years ago where the best (commercially available) ones could barely cut cardboard. So honestly, it does more than what I was expecting. Secondly, you don't have to spend more money to get more power. I should have included actual prices to support my statement. The Ortur LM2Pro goes for around $450. The K40 CO2 laser, which is the one I compared it to, goes for around $350-$400. I'm not saying that in order to make one or the other look better. All I wanted was to objectively show how the LM2Pro fits in the current market of hobby lasers. Lastly, about those glasses: At 9:48 I say: "Now, the bottom line is that these glasses probably do filter out some of the blue light. It's just that the certificate is misleading to the average consumer and these might therefore give a false sense of security." At no point did I state that the glasses were unsafe. I do however stand by my statement that they are of the wrong color and might give a false sense of security. At 10:04 I even show how much better the orange cover is when compared to the green glasses. Those clips also show what I stated earlier, which is that they do filter out some of the blue light. It's just much less than what it could have been, had they sent orange glasses. Now to the actual question why I still decided to use those glasses: Please refer to 9:56 where I say "Now, as for my part, I have ordered some orange [glasses], which should arrive soon, but they haven't arrived yet." At that point, the green ones were the best ones I had, so that's what I used. Thanks for watching anyway and thanks for your input. @@Thisisntausername I bought some no-name ones, which for liability reasons I don’t support you doing and I don’t trust them at all to hold up under direct laser exposure. But they do decrease eye strain due to scattered radiation by a lot when compared to the green ones
@@ConstantijnC I bought a few pair of EaglePair glasses when I first started messing with 532nm, 450nm, 650nm lasers... it's hard to be sure how well these things work though. I mostly think glasses have to be secondary protection due to the risks of third-parties entering the room, or especially pets! I'm not even sure that poor glasses are better than no glasses. I remember some story years ago about bad UV sunglasses actually causing more damage to the eyes because the iris opens from the darkened glasses so I wonder if something like that can happen here too. I've superficially looked for the protective panels but haven't found a great supplier, maybe you know one?
@@synapticaxon9303 yeah absolutely. I think the test I did at 10:04 is a good first test for lasers that emit in the visible spectrum. But it doesn’t show how the glasses react to higher laser powers. It should be very representative of scattered or diffused light due to reflection off of different materials, which is the main risk factor anyway in my uneducated opinion.
Until reviews show the true durability of these this is nothing more than fanboy flaming the fire for a lame option! Anyone who thinks this is a thorough review is kidding themselves because the life expectancy of these lasers does not justify the cost!
I specifically said that I only tested it for 2 weeks and I referred to all the other reviews because I’m fully aware that 2 weeks is barely a shakedown cruise. I also said that it’s hard to justify when CO2 lasers are almost the same price, yet so much better. I asked Ortur privately what the life expectancy of the laser is and they said that the manufacturer of the laser module states 20000h. Ortur themselves seem to be a bit cautious and guarantee 8000h at 100% power. But even that seems very exaggerated, but it’s the best Info I can give at this point. Mechanically it’s a very nice machine and I stand by that. If it has to be a diode laser, then I’d get this one. If not, then I’d get a CO2.
@@ConstantijnC I am with you on this, it would be great if someone who had the resources would put these through the paces and take them up to and past their given life expectancy so we can get a better idea of the true value they offer, or dont! This is an expensive proposition but something these developers should really offer guys like you to be able to do. Then and only then will they be able to make the claims they do but we both know they wont do that because they know first hand that regardless what they claim the life expectancy is they are flat out lying to our faces! I know because I have a friend that was part of a college team that tested these. Unfortunately they are under NDA and not allowed to show the results but he said those life expectancy claims are based on one laser out of 100 that actually made it that far while the 99 others failed at less than half that time, yet because the one lived that long they feel justified to flat out lie about the quality of these lasers! In the developers defense it is impossible to be able to properly benchmark these to know if they will or will not fail early but it does bode that the entire format is weak at best, they know it and yet they have a cash cow they are going to milk as long as they can! people do need to know that the term "your lasers hours will vary" is like playing the lottery and only 1 out of 100 will actually get the claimed value out of their purchase!
@@kevinm3751Yes I was really considering testing the ttf of the module but decided against it because, as you said, the ttf vary so much between modules that my single datapoint would do more harm than good… someone could pull a conclusion based on that single insignificant datapoint.
True but then to be fair, you'd have to consider that CO2 lasers also degrade (and the cheaply made K40 ones faster than others) and they even degrade while you're not using them. And you need a chiller box that had a considerable cost to the base installation. A tube or a diode head end up being disposable parts. A gas chambered diode laser is still a decent tool, not a perfect universal solution. I don't see what's so upsetting about it. It"s like comparing a maglev train and a diesel powered one. They have different cost and fit different needs.
