I think Jame's view about the Oscars shows a maturing. I used to think the Oscars were this big deal, and got really mad when my fav film didn't win. When I got older, I realized that it's just people making these decisions. I use the Oscars now to catch Best Picture nominees that I may have missed if there wasn't an award show that did this.

I actually think Fellowship of the Ring was a better film than Return of the King. I think they just didn't want to give the award to a fantasy movie when they didn't even know how the trilogy was going to pan out. So it made more sense to give the award to the series as a whole at its completion.

Return of the King is my favorite best picture winner, still amazing that the third film in a fantasy series won best picture. Titanic absolutely was very deserving of its win and has become one of my favorite movies over the past 20 years. For the 2015 movies, Mad Max Fury Road should have won best picture. Nothing against spotlight, but mad max was more deserving of the best picture win. That movie had incredible word building, visual storytelling, and insane rewatch-ability.

Well, it definitely helped it was more like a really long movie split into 3 parts. Rather than the usual scenario of each movie being written separately. That kind of situation where you know for sure you're getting 3 movies is super rare. And sometimes they squander it anyway (Star Wars sequels).
